Pigs, Dogs, Fish and Frogs. Oh My!

ugly-frog.jpgWith pigs, pit bulls and fish-wrapping now all the rage on the presidential campaign trail, why not add scary frogs to the pile.

Long before Karl Rove put his name on the politics of distraction, a top Republican operative who specializes in electing weak candidates once explained to me how you derail a powerful foe who’s winning on issues. He called it the ugly frog routine.

Ugly frogs in this game can be anything that opposing candidates do or say that, out of context, puts them on the defense.

“Stick that frog right in their face, shake it all around, and say, ‘Here, look at this BIG UGLY FROG,’” the GOP consultant said. “Then, as they defend themselves and explain the context, real quick grab another ugly frog. Repeat often until they’ve spent most of the campaign reacting to your agenda.”

John McCain’s team has been playing the ugly frog routine against Barack Obama almost daily, starting with the Paris Hilton celebrity advertisement, forcing the Democrats to react to a barrage of silly attacks.

How do you fight the ugly frog routine, I asked this practitioner of the political dark arts. “Get your own frogs,” he said. “Stay off defense.”

  1. Katherine,
You actually replied to one of my post, I am honored. How I do miss our bantering.
You are correct no one came out and called her a Dike, or a number of other derogatory names, I mean not even the DNC would stoop so low. Well that is questionable.
But in similar fashion to BHO’s coded phrase “pig and lipstick”, the point is to get the message across without saying the actual words. Lipstick on a pig was a direct assult on Sarah Palin to refer to her as trailer trash.
This is similar John “PB” Edwards, intention to make sure everyone listening to the debate be made aware that Cheney’s daughter, Mary, is a lesbian. It was a kind of in your face statement for Bush-Cheney supporters or anyone considering voting for them. Pssss…Did you know Cheney’s daughter is a lesbian? Do you know what lesbians do?
John “POS” Edwards. Just another example of a leading D who has pushed a female under the bus. OK so it was his wife. A private matter.

  2. “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.” Yes, Karl is a wizard of the worst kind. I still say, respond once loudly (maybe let someone else do it) and get back on message. A very simply-worded, very clear message. Obama needs help with that.

  3. Fry,
You are laughable. Good to see the “real” you again. false you during the primary was just too….tooo…..Twilight Zone. ;0)

  4. If they said “and Pigs will fly” will that be an insult to McCain? Pilot and all.
The other thing is that Jane Swift is in charge of the Palin Rapid Response Team. Isn’t it ironic? It adds a whole new dimension to “Swift”boating.

  5. I dislike a double post, but it takes time to write replies, and I would hate to see the intended recipient of my reply think their thought provoking words weren’t read.

jamie, LOL. This is all such bull$hit. since there is no discussion to speak of of anything of substance coming out of either campaign, there is no discussion of Obama’s and McCain’s economic plans that would increase the debt by $3.5 and $5 T, respectively. No discussion of soldiers staying, coming home, going elsewhere to fight a group of enemies that is virtually endless in number. No discussion of how either plans to deal with unfunded Medicare and social security program costs in excess of $50T. No, the discussionis about whether Palin is qualified to be POTUS -- she isn’t -- and whether lipstick/pig/fish/newspaper comments are sexist and ageist -- they aren’t -- or make Obama appear unpresidential -- they may or may not depending on your political sensibilities.
And Fry, I do not see the misogynistic crap I saw in the primaries. It was clera Obama was not referring to Palin as the pig, and she is inexperienced, but some things indeed haven’t changed. They just aren’t working for Obama right now.
“But in similar fashion to BHO’s coded phrase “pig and lipstick”, the point is to get the message across without saying the actual words. Lipstick on a pig was a direct assult on Sarah Palin to refer to her as trailer trash.”
McCain used teh term to refer to Hillary’s attempt at universal health care in the 90′s -- coded language? Palin used lipstick to differentiate herself from pit bulls. Coded words? Sauce, goose.

  7. Bowman,
“Isn’t it ironic? It adds a whole new dimension to “Swift”boating.”
    Yet another stroke of genius.

  8. Good post, CC. Dems should find a new hobby. They suck at politics.

I agree, what is strange, after all these years the Dems are still vulnerable to these kind of attacks. You would think they have learned something by now.
    Oh well, ssdd

LOL. So I understand you are spending much of your time these days on Brand X’s blog. You are so much better than that. What I mean by that is I always enjoyed your thoughts, Liberal and wrong, but I always enjoyed what you had to say.
    Good to see you :-)

    Chloe,
I understand your point and agree that Democrats have to stop “talking down” to a huge portion of the electorate. It does cause resentment. What I am saying is that these folks are being had by Republicans speaking their language in order to screw them again. I give them credit for being able to see through the game and vote their own self interest. That self interest this time around means voting for Obama.
They don’t have to like him. They just have to realize that more of the same is not good for them or their families.

  12. Katherine,
Thank you for that timely article. I, myself would not have found it.
So many choices to pick from, if one wore lipstick. I personally don’t apply lipstick, chap stick at times yes, but not lipstick. I will be passing this article onto high command for their evaluation of the products.

  13. Fry,
EPROF2 Posted a very thoughtful thread on baby blog about how “You” all are acting Facsist. Very interesting indeed. Well time to exit to make lunch! I miss you! lol

  14. You will be voting ET won’t you? I mean you foolishly haven’t lost your right to vote because of your extended stay in Europe, now have you? How many years did you say you have been there, 10? You know ET, you and Europe have some much in common with their high unemployment rates, and their open sewers.
    Posted by: FryDaddy | September 10, 2008 12:33 PM
Of course I am voting. What a stupid question. And we don’t have as high unemployment rates as in the USA and people aren’t losing their houses like they are in the USA. Such a superior system Fry… Aren’t you the proud one?
Open sewers? Only from your mouth.

  15. ‘They don’t have to like him. They just have to realize that more of the same is not good for them or their families.’
    Jamie,
I know you understand. But does Obama.
If he doesn’t stop talking ‘down’ to them (and about them) and start talking ‘to’ them, then it’s not going to happen. (More of the same didn’t stop them from voting Bush in again.)
I’m getting so tired of repeating this. I’m getting tired, period. How can so many Democrats still not understand such a basic truth. Would a little respect for everyone be too much to ask.

  16. Sheila,
“I enjoy baby Blog. you ought to try it sometime.”
LOL. WOW where have I heard that pitch before. LOL

  17. Too bad she wasn’t from Oregon because I would be delighted to see how delighted John McCain would be to make “Nice Beaver” comments in his stump speech…

  18. “Thanks, Chloe. Still haven’t heard from any Democratic operatives, though.”
    Don’t hold your breath Champ.
You make way to much sense to interest them.:)

  20. I still know how Biden can win his debate.
Oh, just heard the clip (no TV, I hear it all 2 days later)
“Lipstick on a pig”? “My Muslim faith”? Get this guy an earpiece! It worked for GWB…

  21. Chloe,
“How can so many Democrats still not understand such a basic truth. Would a little respect for everyone be too much to ask.”
Respect is fine. But if they want to prove they see through the Republican manipulation and are as intelligent as you claim, there is one way to prove it. Vote for Obama and then let him know it wasn’t because he was smart but because they were.

  22. Sounds like Obama needs to sit for a minute, back off and look at the big picture. Seems like he is getting caught up in the frenzy a bit much. Then maybe he can get back to focusing on the important things and quit letting all this bullshit distract from the message.
Didn’t he and McCain have quite the little sqabble for a bit when he was first elected to the senate? Seems like what he did then was to back off and let McCain have his little meltdown about whatever the problem was, then they talked it out. I remember thinking then that he appeared strong and in control, and much more level headed than McCain. Or, am I remembering this incident correctly?

  23. jamie, thanks for the animal associations -- I hope Plouffe and Axelrod see them -- Obama got the fish simile wrong -- his was 8 day old fish.

  24. Is picking out a WH dog the post primary equivalent of measuring for drapes?
TB, you are remembering it correctly -- it was an exchange of snarky letters, initiated by McCain.

  25. patd
Apparently one of the Obama girls has alergies and it was important to select a dog with very little shedding. The AKC narrowed it down to a few breeds and then took votes. The standard poodle is a great choice as long as they don’t give it one of those really stupid looking frou frou haircuts. Intelligent, good family dog, and great for families with allergies.

  26. Pogo
If I were running the campaign I would grab ahold of the ‘lipstick on a pig’ statement and tie it to McCains tail.
    Like this
“Senator McCain is worried about lipstick on a pig, You’re not.
Why? Because you are worried that you can’t put your children through college,
You are worried that You may get laid off tommorrow and you may be one of the many folks in forclosure. You are worried because because you know someone in bankrupcy because they got sick and went to the Hospital.
You know it could be you next.
    When you step in that voting booth remember all those worries then remember;
All John McCain is worried about is lipstick on a pig.”
    Jack

  27. “Vote for Obama and then let him know it wasn’t because he was smart but because they were.”
    OK Jamie,
You go out there and tell that to all those ‘swing voters’ (or bubbas, rednecks, ‘stupid people’ or whatever the demeaning word of the day is).
I’m talking about how to win the election. Not about right and wrong. Bill learned how to (or knew instinctively how to) talk to everyone with respect. I guess you just can’t fake that stuff.
You know my one little vote doesn’t mean a thing Jamie. This is about something a lot bigger than you and me. And if the Dems don’t figure that out soon, and what to do about it, then let the chips fall where they may.

  28. “Craig, are you suggesting that we buy a pig in a poke?”
Flatus, I don’t think Craig is suggesting that but the Republicans seem to be with their lipsticked pig.

  29. The Repugs are doing what they do every election — making it about personalities without issues being discussed. Unfortunately, people fall for it everytime. You would think, especially those “blue collar types” and women with actual “women’s issues” would be interested in issues that affect them.

  30. Jamie,
Our ‘best’ dog was Bind Faden von Rotwurst, Faden, for short.
A marvelous red dachsund that had absolutely no idea that she was on the canine side of the family.
Stinky used to take her for walks. Faden would strut down the street towing Stinky by a red knitted leash. And, on the way home, Stinky would carry poor worn-out Faden.
We had to leave her with number one daughter when we left for England in ’79. No way that we would put her through the British quarantine.

  31. ET,
LOL. ET as you know there requirement that must be met for you to legally be allowed to vote. Just because you claim to be a US citizen doesn’t give you the right to vote, and the fact that you have spent so many years in Europe you may have unintentionally revoked your privilege to vote. Now that would really be a shame. Of course there are a number of American citizens living throughout the world who can’t vote legally for all sorts of reasons. Isn’t that right ET?

I didn’t say it had anything to do with you. I’m saying that you are saying those people are too stupid to know what is good for them. I give them more credit than that.

  38. Very funny Jamie.
I must say, politics aside, Palin’s arrival has really injected some much-needed comedy into this campaign. She really is almost like the Frances McDormand character from Fargo.
Okay…back to politics: I despise her.

  39. jack, what TB said. You should sign up for the campaign -- they pay for advice worse than that.

    Jamie,
If you are perfectly willing to accept someone who you know is telling you things that are complete lies yet reject a candidate who seems to full of himself while telling you the truth, why bother engaging in the process at all?
Why waste the time and energy? I don’t remember you professing that personality was the number one issue for you this election.
I guess people don’t care if their being driven down the right track or the wrong track. I guess if you get on the bus to the beach and end up at the dump, so long as you like your bus driver you don’t mind the stench…good to know for future reference…

In a way, everything I diliked about Sen. Obama (ambition willing to walk over anyone to get to the top) is present in Palin with the added nonsese of right wing, religious idealogue who preaches to others while behaving badly herself. YUCK

  43. champ,

I would hope they be a little more thought provoking than that. Their position for years, and maybe still is, it’s a woman’s body and she should bellowed to do whatever she wants with her body. 45. Fresh blood for the vampire
“A beady-eyed McCain gets a boost from the charismatic Sarah Palin, a powerful new feminist — yes, feminist! — force. Plus: Obama must embrace his dull side.
I”t’s heavy weather for Obama fans, as momentum has suddenly shifted to John McCain — that hoary, barnacle-encrusted tub that many Democrats like me had thought was full of holes and swirling to its doom in the inky depths of Republican incoherence and fratricide. Gee whilikers, the McCain vampire just won’t die! Hit him with a hammer, and he explodes like a jellyfish into a hundred hungry pieces.”
“…I must admit that McCain is currently eating Obama’s lunch…”
    http://www.salon.com/opinion/paglia/2008/09/10/palin/

  46. jamie, I don’t see much hope that the O campaign is going to figure out that they can’t win if they continue their current approach. I don’t know exactly what it is since all I’m seeing of it is interviews with O’Reilly and Olberman and reports about stupid comments and stupid reactions. I’ve seen ONE Obama ad here this week, and it was less than inspiring. I’ve seen probably a half dozen McCain ads -- and they have that straightforward tone theat you’d expect from the straight talk express team. I don’t think chloe is wrong in her “let the chips fall where they may” post. I ain’t seeing anything to make me think Obama is running a decent campaign, the polls aren’t reflecting any movement in his direction, and if you look at the RCP battleground state numbers, O & M split them 50/50 at present. Problem is, OH (to say nothing of FL) is in JM’s column right now, and (of course I could be wrong, but…) I truly do not believe O can win this election without winning OH.

  47. “I don’t remember you professing that personality was the number one issue for you this election.”
Bear, Go back and reread the exchange. I’m the one saying that it doesn’t matter what you think of the candidate’s personality or manner of speaking. Voters need to vote for the program that is in their best interest and not be swayed by these silly side issues.
FDR sometimes came across as a snob. Eleanor didn’t. He sent his wife out to speak to middle America about his plans.
Obama sometimes comes across as aloof and detached (I actually think that is a protective facade). Even if you believe that about him, You need to look at the proposals not the man.
Quite a while back, I said he should send Hillary west and Bill south to talk to the people that Obama is having trouble reaching.

  48. ET,

  49. “send Hillary west and Bill south to talk to the people that Obama is having trouble reaching”

  51. Indeed, people should vote issues -- some do. Some don’t. Their votes count the same. The poor political fact of life is that if you can’t attract issues voters AND personality voters, the other guy who can is going to win. If O will campaign on issues and personality, and leave the snarky a$$ed chicken$hit soundbites alone, he may stand a chance.

  52. Bear,
“Fry, she doesn’t need to force it on her own state when she knows that the states that drive the text books, like Texas, will do it for her…”
What is Sarah’s approval rate, 65 to 80%? What is Congress 9%, Bush 30%. McCain over 50%, BHO under 50%.
Yeah Sarah must be doing something right. She is also attracting more and more females voters from the other side. Women are starting to see the D party as the “Wham Bam, Thank You Ma’am Party.” Or Bear like the husband/boyfriend who desert the family, or as one fathers a child, and then desert both the mother and the child, leaving them to fend on their own.

What is it 50 days? Lots of time for the Obama campaign to move forward. Lots of time for the McCain Campaign to show it empty of everything and can’t offer us anything.

Obama should have shown a bit of humbleness and offered her the VP slot. But he couldn’t do it… and thus we are in this mess where Dems should win in a cake walk and are struggling to keep on message and keep ahead in the polls. Nothing against Biden and I do respect Obama’s choice to choose whom he most wants as a running mate, but it just put his campaign into a THUD mode. All the worse for us. I cannot contemplate another 4 years of the last 8….

I feel your pain and have “equal disdain” for Bush/Cheney as regards the last 8 years and truly wish I could support policies that better reflect my own. Being center left on social issues does not preclude my admiration for Palin, whose fortitude is so evident in this strong capable woman that it cemented my decision to back McC. Obama’s dismissal of Hillary also weighs heavy, but above all else it is his lack of inner strength. Nor have I forgotten that M. Dowd dubbed him “OBAMBI” for his weakness which is a commonly held view even amongst his strongest supporters

LaDuca said Monday that he regrets posting the comments and understands how they can be construed as racist. “In hindsight, when you read it a second time, it’s like, ‘oops,’” he said. “It was just a dumb move on my part to make a statement like that public.”
He’s not sorry for what he said, just that he said it in public…nice…

  81. Freedom of choice -- in school science classes? Give me a break. Creationism, intelligent design, call it what you will, is religion, not science. Choose between religion and science? How about we let kids choose between English and Spanish as the language they will speak in their schools? That’s freedom of choice, and at least both of those are languages. I don’t understand why conservatives are so scared of choice.

  82. Fry,
Debate the issue is a philosophy class, not a science class.
What if in a heavily Muslim community, they wanted to teach a version of creationism that the Great Satan Bush was begat from the sweat on Mohammed’s ass…do we “debate” that?
What if you were in Utah and the Mormons wanted to teach, in science class, that those people or things cursed by God wear a certain mark or skin color?

    FD,
The Theory of Evolution is a scientific theory with measurable and viewable effects. Until a better more expansive theory comes along, it stands as being accurate accumulated knowledge on the subject. So far everything we are learning about DNA and gene influence.
Creationism is a religious dogma with no provable facts that can be measured or observed. As such it belongs in church or at most a course on comparative religions not in a science class.

Why even make room for it in the schedule with hot and cold, running off at the mouth surrogates? They all deserve to lose their FCC licenses for failure to serve the public by actually presenting useable information.

  93. A great question from that link Jamie…
Here are some of the questions Palin should be answering, for Alaskans and the rest of the country:

  94. Meanwhile, back in the real world……..
    WHY BAM’S FLAILING
    URBAN MACHINE RUNS AGROUND
“IF it suddenly seems like the Obama campaign doesn’t have any idea what it’s doing, maybe that’s because it doesn’t. ”
“Barack Obama has never run a campaign against a real Republican. And his main strategist, David Axelrod, is way out of his areas of expertise.”
But Barack Obama would be a fool to bet on any of that. Instead, he should make an executive decision -- and bring on board some Democratic talent that actually has a clue of how to fight to win this race.

  96. Chloe-
    “…Urban machine runs aground”
Not much surprise in that. Only had to listen to Pat Buchanan on Imus this morning. He talked about the liberal effete dissing the Assembly of God people while ignoring how that affects urban pentecostal voters who have been part of Mr Obama’s core.

Obama is an even weaker candidate than I anticipated.
Obama needs to meet with Bill and Hillary and pointedly ask them, how do I beat these miserable Republicans. Then, take the advice.
Republicans assume that voters are stupid..and will accept distorted charges like the lipstick controversy..anything to avoid the issues.

  112. Wasn’t Bill’s law license revoked? Did he ever get it back?
    Bowman,
If it were me, I’d hook him up with a completely off the radar weekend with King Hugh and friends at the mans…

  113. Rez, just another cheap shot at Clinton? He’d also tell him to directly attack McCain and to run against the unpopular policies of the president that McCain has voted for 90% of the time. (btw -- if Dole had gotten all of Perot’s votes in ’96, he still would have lost by .1%).

  114. No cheap shot. 1) I call him Slick affectionately 2) Last dem to win WH with 50% + was Carter. WJC needed help from Perot both times, but less as an incumbent.

  115. Bowmanc,

a poodle…. are you kidding me….. get those kids some allergy shots and buy a Rottweiler…..
ugly frogs?….. ~~~~~ are we making fun of the French again~~~~~~

  117. Pogo,
I know Perot took votes away from both in 96 but more so in 92, where he was determinative. I’d have to see EC analysis to see how he hurt them in the States in 96 before agreeing about Dole.

  118. Bear, I doubt he got it back although he was eligible to in Jan., 2006. It was a five year suspension and $25,000 fine, but he didn’t live in AK in ’06, so he probably didn’t try to get it back. I can’t find anything that shows he applied for reinstatement.

  119. Rez. On a percentage basis, perot and dole collectively had .1% fewer votes than Clinton in ’96. I’d have to see where Perot got his votes in ’92 before I’d agree he was determinative.
    But now, I gotta go.

  120. Why do conservatives still spread the Ross Perot “spoiler” myth?
Even tho ALL the evidence shows that without Ross Perot, Clinton would have certainly humiliated both George Bush Sr. AND Bob Dole worse than he did. I mean from polling right after Ross Perot dropped out(before reentry) in July ’92 http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.ht… showing Clinton LEADING WITH A MAJORITY the fact that throughout the campaign, in September ’92, Clinton was still leading before Perot’s reentry with far over 50 percent http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.ht.

Hi Chloe,Sea & Renee .. thanks for welcoming me back … I had some health & family problems, think that why I needed a breather from here & all the bickering …
Rita: I agree with you completely .. was reading the posts last night & there were several who kept saying BS like this : people are stupid …
    don’t know themselves …
dumb on voting sites for them …
the insults against women: women are against other women in power …
    not team players …
and then there’s this one, which am sure we’ll hear it again tonight & every night until at least Nov. in some form or other:
we(ones who disagree with ‘em) just don’t have a clue & we should believe them ..
yeah, right,we all know they are the ones with ALL the answers .. NOT!!
I wrote this the other night & added a bit more .. JMHO ~~~
“This one thing strikes me about this election year is,
how WELL the candidates have shown us how they can work together in 2009 ~~~ (not to mention the supporters behind them as above shows)
I would LOVE to watch a news program about the FACTS & ISSUES ..
not all this childish back & forth, making fun at everything thing that comes out of each others mouth …. ”
well, as far as watching news shows … I don’t watch anything on MSNBC anymore & only watch Lou DObbs on CNN … I stopped most of the newsletters i was getting, because I wasn’t finding news, but more bull shit…
Lou DObbs keeps saying on his show that no candidate is really talking about the ISSUES ,,, which is true …
So tell me, how is the American people to decide WHO is better to run our country when there’s no facts being said by them???
oh, you can look on line & find some ideas they have, but no details on how they are going to do it …
It’s wonderful to have IDEAS & want CHANGE,
    I’m all for it!!!
But you have to have substance to back those claims up & I’m not hearing anything from any of the candidates ….
“it’s really dampened my love of Politics ”

Speaking for my wife and myself we have never voted for a Repug but we both support McCain. I am an indy {Clintons4McCain} and my wife is a reg .dem and PUMA.
We both were strong Hillary supporters, gave our time, money and were so offended by the MSM, the race baiting abated with the gleeful complicity of the “Chosen One,” and the demeaning of Bill Clinton and his presidency by Obama. Two years ago I was favorable disposed to Obama and he has worked hard to steadily diminish my good opinion.
I had already decided to vote for McC reluctantly I will admit, but the pick of Sarah Palin truly galvanized my/our support. My wife and I are both pro choice but like Lieberman { so loved on this blog} we are center right on national security matters. Having lived in NYC most of my life I take National security very seriously. The Wellstone Memorial fiasco drove me from the dem party. I thought the party was taken over by far left crazies and time has certainly proved me correct. If it is any consolation my wife and I have equal distaste and for the far right wing nuts. Blame our decisions on Obama’s fierce timidity, on Brazile, Dean but most certainly on the duplicitous and NEUTRAL CLYBURN.

  123. Washington Post on possible criminal acts by Governor Palin, as reported in the Anchorage Daily News:
“The newspaper reported that Palin billed the state for meal money while spending more than 300 nights at her Valley home during her first 19 months in office and regularly takes family members on state-paid trips.”
“As with previous governors, the state pays for the first family’s meals when the Palins are in Juneau.
In Palin’s case, the state is also paying for at least some meals when she’s staying in Wasilla. Like other state officials, she’s entitled to $60 a day “per diem” for food and incidentals, such as tips, while traveling on state business. State rules say that if your job stations you in Juneau or Anchorage, but you live in another part of the state, you can still get the meal money when visiting your hometown, said Linda Perez, director of administrative services for the governor.”
The operative phrase is ‘visiting’, not ‘living’ at home.

I still don’t understand. Palin is female and that is about all she has in common with Clinton’s political positions. Beyond that gene … nada.
As to security. All I can see coming from Bush and now McCain is support for the wrong actions in the wrong place based on engendering nothing but fear to gain political power without providing any real security for our citizens.
There is no way to WIN the war on terror for one simple reason: They don’t have any armies. The Europeans who have dealt with all sorts of terrorists for much longer than the US know that is is a police function not a military one. We have poured billions down that rat hole to the destruction of our economy. More of the same isn’t going to make anyone safer.
Your chances of getting bumped off by a terrorist are somewhat less than being on the wrong end of lightning bolt.

  128. Xrepublican,
Not even a sex tape showing Palin in bed with her son or an underaged minor could get McCain to even think about dumping her.
As a matter of fact, he’s the one who should be worried.
He went from being slandered by Karl Rove to completely embracing them so could satisfy his ambition and power lust.
He’s proven he will say or do anything to win…as I think about it…Palin could shit on the actual Constitution or Declaration of Independence and so long as she doesn’t wipe her ass with the flag…she’d still be good.

“The wrenching diagnosis of 47 chromosomes must seem to parents like the end of a dream instead of the beginning of a life. But children born with Down syndrome — who learn slowly but love deeply — are generally not experienced by their parents as a curse but as a complex blessing. And when allowed to survive, men and women with an extra chromosome experience themselves as people with abilities, limits and rights.”
“This is properly called eugenic abortion — the ending of “imperfect” lives to remove the social, economic and emotional costs of their existence. And this practice cannot be separated from the broader social treatment of the disabled. By eliminating less perfect humans, deformity and disability become more pronounced and less acceptable. Those who escape the net of screening are often viewed as mistakes or burdens. A tragic choice becomes a presumption — “Didn’t you get an amnio?” — and then a prejudice. And this feeds a social Darwinism in which the stronger are regarded as better, the dependant are viewed as less valuable, and the weak must occasionally be culled.”

I still don’t understand. Palin is female and that is about all she has in common with Clinton’s political positions. Beyond that gene … nada.
    Posted by: Jamie
I am voting for the top of the ticket McCain not Palin. I don’t agree with her on all/most social issues, but I can still admire her apparent fortitude and poise under fire.
Obama is not ready to be Commander In Chief with the threat I see coming from a confluence of a reurgent Russia and a dangerous an unpredicable Iran. I supported Hillary for many reasons but her broad support by the majority of generals gave me real confidence in her as Commander In Chief and only added to her luster. Obama sadly evokes a weakness that I find troubling.
I also supported the surge, not because I was prescience but out of deference to Gen. Petraeus who I hold In the highest regard. It is also worth mentioning that the intrepid Obama also refused to denounce the anti Gen. Petraeus Ad by Moveon disdaining this noble patriot. Hillary of course did just that risking ALL in the primaries. Please ask me to extol the virtues of Hillary and I could do so with pleasure. What I so much admired in Hillary, her wisdom. experience, judgement and toughness as displayed in the primary debates which she handily won, all this and more I find lacking in Obama. I also admire Hillary for her vote to call Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group, again risking all, and again the solidly meek OBAMBI hid from that tough vote. To vote for Obama I would have to suspend reason. When Obama had the opportunity to pick Hillary, which meant he would have to put his pride in his pocket, do what is best for party and country, he succumbed to PRIDE, in the very WORST sense of that word. Jamie, I respect your decision to vote for Obama, some may find him “likable enough” I simply do not.
I also believe McC will pick a SC justice like Sandra Day O”Connor.

  144. Bear,
Palin and uncle ted are not even pals. They are from rival gangs within the Organized Crime faction of Alaska’s mono-wing republican party.
Also, you say that McCheneybush will do ANYTHING to win. Yet, if it is shown that Palin embezzled, he will have to deep 6 her to win.
    Huit Clos.

  145. How about two more and then I have to go. But just wanted to add to the conversation about Racial and Sexist Republicans. After all, THEY aren’t racist of Sexist……
Now, I have heard Obama’s remarks about “John Mcains non-policies and the Lipstick on the pig. The more we talk about it. The more people will see that it was Mccain and his NON-Policies….I mean his policies are BUSH policies. That is why He called Obama a sexist….Read on.
He said in his remarks at the GOP dinner that he also recently participated in a “highly classified, national security simulation” with Obama.
“I’m going to tell you something: That boy’s finger does not need to be on the button,” Davis said. “He could not make a decision in that simulation that related to a nuclear threat to this country.”
As for Obama’s Democratic rival, McConnell said U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York seems to be “teetering on the brink.”
“I hear she hasn’t been this worried since a new Hooters opened” near her home with former President Bill Clinton, McConnell said, prompting laughs from the 400 Northern Kentucky Republicans

  146. “I hear she hasn’t been this worried since a new Hooters opened” near her home with former President Bill Clinton, McConnell said, prompting laughs from the 400 Northern Kentucky Republicans
Mitch got the joke from this blog -in comments.

You’re playing psychiatrist without a license again, mt.
Prescience about ‘surge’ ??? Most of the generals on the ground opposed it; Patraeus promoted it to give the Iraqi puppets a chance to make a national government. They ignored it, probably understanding, like Biden, that you can’t force people to love each other -- not even at gunpoint.
If there is a blood bath during the month before you the election, you republicans will drop all your mindless chatter about ” ‘surge’ working”, and blither that the terrorists are out to hurt poor idiot mccain. Re the bilge about being independent or pro-Hillary: o u kid.

  148. Did a black man really call a white woman a pig today? Down at the general store?
That’s the subtext here, my friends. This is Emmett Till Revisted, but sanitized for a nation that can’t bear to think of itself as racist anymore.
Craig was right on with his Willie Horton post a couple days back.

  149. The more research I have seen on how myths get perpetuated
the more I think, say nothing and attack with yourbiggest ugliest frog is the way to go.
Republicans never disappoint when it comes to “the campaign that will do anything usually wins.”

  150. Thats the truth KGC. Lee Atwater lives.
But the question really is, Are we wiser this year? Or are we going to fall for the Old Cry Wolf Again?
    Can’t wait to find out.

  151. “lies and phoney outrage”
hmmm, karma? wonder if hill and bill rolled their eyes when they heard that one.

  152. Chris Matthews is doing a good job covering the “pig” thang.
It’s CLEAR that the McBush ad took everything out of context. What Obama was talking about originally. Putting Katie Couric in it. The whole thing.
McBush is spending a lot of time on non-issues.
It has Rove’s fingerprints all over it, again.
    Let’s hear about the ISSUES!
    tt

  153. Lou Dobbs is talking about the increasing number of work Visas being issued by the State Department at the behest of corporations who want to “appear” to be hiring within the US rather than “outsourcing”, but are actually hiring at below the going rate for American workers and undercutting wages by about 20%. All the various types of Visas are shown here:
    http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1271.html
Another half million are being requested for this year when U.S. unemployment is approaching 6% (not counting the ones who have fallen off of unemployment).
My favorites (NOT) Indian programmers and nurses. Back in the 70s, nursing schools were being closing down because “colleges could train enough of them” … didn’t happen. and Indian companies with offices in the US pay for apartments, utilities, cars and per diem for groups of programmers. No individual can compete against those deep pockets making huge profits.
Unfortuantely, both political parties are in on the take and the American worker be damned.
Now I’m really partial to Australians so the Visa that is exclusively for them to come work and play here is one I’ll let slide. :-)
    http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/462/pdf/fact_1_whv_us.pdf

  154. Craig…let me guess: That “top Republican operative” had to be Mac Stipanovich, he of the “saddle up and ride to the sound of the guns” fame from the 2000 recount battle.
He’s still one of the best political minds in Florida, who managed to milk-nurse a dumbass from Tampa named Bob Martinez all the way to the governor’s mansion back in 1986. Bob Martinez…one of the worst governor’s in memory down here in the state of recent giants like Reuben Askew, Bob Graham and Lawton Chiles.
The frog thing sounds like something Mac would say.

  155. Wasn’t Matthews a Repub or pro them?
He seems to have drifted more to the center, or left.
    tt

  156. Lawton Chiles, Democrat from Florida, was one of the best politicians America ever had.
And for people in the know, another person on that list would have to be Pete Domenici, Republican of New Mexico.
Lawton, God bless his soul, would agree.

  157. Another outstanding Republican politician: Warren Rudman of New Hampshire.
    Chiles
    Domenici
    Rudman
These are people who knew how to get shit done and take care of bidness in the U.S. Senate.
And don’t even get me started on Richard Russell and LBJ.

  158. Keith O. is totally losing his mind in front of a national viewing audience. He needs to get help.
Meanwhile, does anyone else get irritated by these Big Pharma commericials that feature marginally hunky gray-haired guys with intelligence-imparting wire-rimmed glasses who look to be in their late 50s or early 60s, loading a mountain bike onto a high-end Yakima rack on the back of a late-model Lexus SUV, and at the same time claiming that they are only “just now” realizing that they have had high cholesterol for years and that some new wonder drug saved their life?
Give me a break. If you’re in your 50s, are driving a Lexus SUV and know enough to buy a Yakima bike rack, you’ve been monitoring your cholesterol religiously for the past 20 years, asshole. Otherwise, you’re just some dumb paid actor.
I’m thinking these kinds of commericials are even worse than the His-N-Her Bathtubs somehow placed nonsensically in the middle of a wheatfield that Cialis promotes.

  159. Tiptoe…KO’s comment could be considered “good” only if you’re mental health professional looking into clues regarding his total psychological disintegration.
The guy is nuts, right down to his “Good Night And Good Luck” salutation.
This has nothing to do with politics. It’s totally about an ego run amok.

  160. Again, let me refer you for the second time in a single week to Gloria Swanson’s groundbreaking performance as Nora Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard.”
Keith Olbermann IS Nora Desmond. Except he doesn’t even know it.
    Gloria Swanson knew it.

  161. Hey patd,
NP. I’m from the school of “you’re Indian or you ain’t.”
I happen to be mixed blood. My mom was Indian and my dad was white (both deceased). I’m also enrolled as a tribal member in a federally recognized Tribe. Not all tribes are FR, some are only State recognized. Legal historical shit.
Each tribe sets their own membership/citizenship requirements. Most require the individual to be at least 1/4 degree Indian blood(same tribe) which would mean that you would need to have at a minimum one parent, a half degree or both 1/4.You can do the math. Some tribes, i.e. years ago Navajo required minimum 1/2 degree Indian blood. Some require ancestry to flow from mother i.e. many Six Nations.
I won’t delve into the “what is an Indian” in terms of people’s beliefs regarding cultural, spiritual, language or community standard qualifications. These are all very subjective for the person and also subject to debate, fights or worse.lol That was the point of my first sentence.
So I consider myself an Indian and am recognized as such by my own Indian community for what that’s worth. I use to say my dad was an old Indian fighter and my mom was the old indian LOL
    HTH

  162. Over the weekend, 3 republican US House candidates used the word ‘uppity’ to characterize the Obamas and a black newsman, Ron Allen. Is this calculated to remind their deep south constituents to ‘vote white’ ?

  163. Memo to: Dr. Sheila, Medicine Woman,
No, it’s NOT okay. The guy is insane, just as all the pundits you and I both HATE (such as Bill O’Reilly) are not okay.
This is what is wrong with the political process. Did you even listen to Obama’s speech today?
If you happen to agree with something that’s insane one minute out of every day, and praise it in a forum like this, you’re automatically validating the other 23 hours and 59 minutes of cable insanity as “OKAY”.
    Okay?

  164. God Almighty, now right-thinking Dems are supposed to get on board with peddling images of McCain as a “terrorist” in swing states where it matters most?
    This election is lost.
    See you guys in 2012.

  165. “As for Obama’s Democratic rival, McConnell said U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York seems to be “teetering on the brink.”

  168. Sheila…whatever. I can more than live with your disdain. Even though we’re voting the same way in November, the way you’ve conducted yourself on this blog this year makes you a lost cause in my book.

  169. Bad news folks, Some of you may remember that I mentioned that my company printed an Obama book and the publisher had pre-scheduled three additional printings. Well, no reprints are coming and they can’t even give the unsold books away.

  170. Governor Pawlenty, of MN, has to rate as one of the worst. His cutbacks on inspections and repairs resulted in the I35 bridge collapse. Hence his soubriquet, ” Governor Potholes Aplenty.”
Just before elections, he pulls a reverse ugly frog routine. He made a big to-do in front of the cameras about ending homelessness as we know it and threw out a few middle of the road ideas. After the election he worked like hell to prevent his Ending Homelessness package from passing in the legislature. Another time he was going to insure every child in the state, but after the election, tried to cut off people -- including children -- from the “Minnesota Cares” program that enrolls the uninsurable into the State and County Workers Insurance Pool.

  171. hi Renee ….
Thanks & am glad to be back … but afraid I won’t be able to sit here much longer .. I fell over the weekend & a new developement is I woke with painful swollen legs, ankles & feet .. just my dumb luck …
I finally got my ne w chair, but don’t have enough space under my table to prop my feet … next thing I’m getting … right now, I use an old Library table that my Grandpa got from a Catholic School he worked at the last few years of his life .. I love it, but when my son makes over my bedroom, will use it as a regular desk for bills, phone, etc … since there’s no way I will give him that .. he’s still trying to get Grandpa’s old Secretary, but told him NO .. he’ll just have to settle for the old Cedar Trunk …

    See you later, gang.

  175. Bomanc,
Very bad news, indeed. Unfortunately, print is for old folks. But, most really old folks aren’t too interested in Obama. They want to read about WWII, laxatives, and how to garden in a senior village.
Young people and Christian-right folks go for ecstasies and dramatic videos rather than print. Religious vaudeville is their style of culture. Perhaps they are only semi-literate. Anyway, brains aren’t fully formed until the age of 24, and in males sometimes not even at 72.
The point is, the lack of sales is not an indicator of things to come, but only what has been lost.

  179. Go to the link. Decide for your self.
MD, you are part right, books are an endangered product. But I would say those that abandon them for other media are missing a mind expanding experience. Books have withstood the test of time, we don’t have enough history to judge how well digital media does. Changing formats may render much of it useless.

    VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA”

  192. Warren
Get out of your room and go knock on some doors. You will get more votes for your candidate than posting cheer leading on this blog.
    Jack

  193. Good point Jack.
But it is always good to spend some time on the blog to figure out what to focus on -- and what should be scrapped.

  194. You have also seemed a bit more partisan yourself in recent days…
What happened -- have you decided that you have a dog in the fight?

  195. Jack’s been less partisan from my perspective. He’s giving good advice, you seem to be one of the few smart enough to consider it, warren. Way to be.

  196. No, I’ve just been saying things you agree / disagree with, besides McCain seems to have his shit together, it is more fun to tell Obama what to do.
    Color me disappointed.
It is not even fun to say I told you so.
    Jack

  197. Only a week and a half ago -- McCain didn’t have his shit together.
Obama still has the fundamentals and the increase in voter registration. If McCain loses the momentum -- he is in trouble. And two months is a long time to keep this up.

  198. Sometime Obama is going to have to look like he has the fire in the belly. He needs to stand up and tell us why anyone should vote for him and do it with passion.
    Jack

  199. Warren
McCain has had the Obama campaign on its heels ever since the celebrity ad.
What is that ,a month or more?
    Jack

  200. I think Obama has spoken to millions, that like what he has to say……he’ll never bring over the staunch republicans…..never.
Who is he trying to win? Who are the undecideds? that’s the key.
I really don’t know anyone undecided except for a friend who is totally out of touch……

  201. Youth vote never comes through and pinning hopes on potheads that signed up at Lollapalooza may be a recipe for disappointment.

  202. UB
The middle class, white suburban, very busy, and are just starting to pay attention. Now is the time to make the sale. In a swing state
    Jack

  203. that would be here in Ohio….and I know people who just believe what they hear….meaning they don’t try to uncover the truth……
Most I know are decided…but those who are not……do not even seem to care…it’s odd to me ,but seems normal to them to just let the chips fall as the will.

  204. You’re as partisan as they come, UB. You consider yourself a truth-seeker?
I know you feel your one little vote is some semblace of control in a wrold gone mad, but it’s not. It doesn’t matter who wins, the same people will still be in power.

  205. Palin
stands there and looks so non political, almost schoolmarmish. Yet I have no doubt she would gut you if you take your eyes off her. LOL
    Jack

  206. ” It doesn’t matter who wins, the same people will still be in power.”
I used to say that, then we got, dubya, and a the lap dog Republican congress.
It used to be that the Congress would show some independence. Something strange happened.
    Jack

  207. Champ,
You know what, I don’t care what you think of me, nor do I care what you think of anyone else. I don’t consider myself anything to this place but a single opinion from one perspective.
Seriously, maybe it is you that reads too much into comments.
Your view of the world provides you with the comfort you seek……if the time ever comes when you seek something different, you may be lucky enough to see something different.

  208. McCain has recently had to do a 180 with his campaign after finally realizing -- after almost two years on the campaign trail -- that the American people are seeking sound judgment and the ability to bring change from the next President.
Better late than never? Is that what we are looking for in a President . . .

  209. Warren
Outside of the 30%ers I think most of want a change from Bush. Beyond that most non political folks have no clue. McCains reform message may sell as well as Obama’s change message.
Been real interesting doesn’t look like it is going to change soon
    Jack

  210. Jack:
No doubt McCain and the Republicans “seem” to have it together right now.
But we will have to see how well a 72 year old Senator with over 20 years of Washington experience -- who is a member of the incumbent party -- pulls off the task of becoming the candidate of change.
Especially since by Nov. 4 -- McCain will have run on a message of change for two months -- while Obama will have run on a message of change for two years.

  211. LardassLiberal, the thing is, the Dems are TOO NICE. KO’s just giving back the kinda stuff ‘they’ give to the Dems ALL the time.
I was bitc….uh…fussing about something in here and someone said I was rabid or something. It’s just the same kind of thing that one hears from the whiny, bully Repubs like Hannity and Limbaugh.
Dems, including mostly Obama, need to POUND in all the crap about BUSH and McBUSH and not let them get away with ANYTHING this time. ENOUGH, swift boating!
    Enough is ENOUGH!!!

  212. ” It doesn’t matter who wins, the same people will still be in power.”
I used to say that, then we got, dubya, and a the lap dog Republican congress. ”
    Jack, you’re SO right!
Enough taking away our rights, enough extreme secrecy, enough hypocrisy, enough BIG everything, ENOUGH, for God’s sake!

  213. tt:
I don’t think Obama wins by trying to beat the Republicans at their own game.
He needs to throw at the playbook and rise above this nonsense. He is not in his comfort zone when he is taking cheap political shots…

  214. Especially not with the Independents and the swing voters.
Those voters fall into those groups exactly because they are not partisan.

  215. Good post, CC. Dems should find a new hobby. They suck at politics.

    True Chloe…So True….
    Anyway,
Good Morning from West Europe all…….
Am getting sick of the pig thing. Please broadcasters find a new hobby. Every headline is about the pig lipstick story…

  216. Hi Jason,
We always seem to be on TM at the same time. I agree about the lipstick-pig
    story. Enough already.

  217. damn straight tiptoe…it’s McBush that Obama needs to keep talking about, and not let up.
I am not liking the fact that whole newscasts go by and we don’t hear a peep about the war raging in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Bush has had seven years to catch OBLaden and hasn’t even come close except at Tora Bora.
It’s September 11, seven years later. Be careful, be safe, and never forget.

  218. I don’t think the “McBush” angle works. McCain is obviously not Bush, and they’ve had a publicly antagonistic relationship in the past. Just $.02.
I don’t know how you guys do it. I consume very little media with no TV, and I’m already burnt out on this stuff. You guys have another 2 months of this bologna. You’re gonna be nuts by Nov. 4th. I got that way in 2004, and all for naught. That was crunch time. We blew it.
In honor of those who died and the families we left behind, and to all of us who have lost so much in the time since in the name of security, I hope we can ask again what really happened that day, how it happened, why it happened, and who is responsible.

  219. @champ: your post of 3:11 sums it up nicely. very good!
    @Prof Marchia….Hi, how ya doing…

  220. Lard and Bear -- you were both really funny earlier and right also, but it took me so long to read all the posts that I can’t remember why or what or…you know. I’m not drunk, just late getting to the posts.
This much I know -- I agree completely re KO. The man is really unbalanced and I have stated that here before, and quite a few times on the msnbc comments. the jealousy between him and Tweety first openly showed its ugly head when Tweety had his college tour interview with Obama, and Tweety kept interrupting the other shows to talk about it. I saw it coming like all the other ego confrontations I have watched over the years.
I am delighted that I don’t work in that office -- must be ulcer time for a lot of them.
KO is flat unbalanced and you will see more of the flowering of his insanity as the days go by. Even when I liked him I wondered where he would go after he flamed out at msnbc. Norma Desmond he is and his DeMille is long gone.

  221. One last time..
This making heads turn this morning here. This blog by ducth RNW newsreporter…
Conclusion: “Lipstickgate. even if he didn

  222. Fry that is not buying that is laying down a bet, and should be treated so.
Called an investment Jack. A calculation that that something bought today will be worth more money in the future. There are no guarantees in investing.
