Straining to Train with Lincoln
Now that the epochal train trip is behind us, wasn’t Barack Obama’s second coming to Washington just a little bit odd? Meant to encourage even more strained comparisons to Abraham Lincoln, there is a big difference.
Lincoln took the train from Illinois to Washington for his first inaugural because that’s what people did when they needed to make such a long trip. He had to take the train. It wasn’t for show.
If Lincoln had done what Obama did — embrace the memory of past presidents by emulating their mode of transportation — Old Abe would have already been in Washington, but then boarded a train to Philadelphia, returning on a horse.

You’ve got that right, Craig. And, in the Wilson Quarterly that just arrived, there’s a piece on how a letter from Lincoln to Obama would read.
So many things to read, so little time and such bad eyes.
I just can’t imagine Mr Obama crossing the Delaware on a frightfully cold winter’s day.
i spose it’s kind of glam to entrain for the big party, but I’ll really be worried when he dons his flight suit to be flown onto an aircraft carrier which he’s caused to go round in circles off the coast, crew and nation anxiously awaiting his glorious arrival……..
ROFL sturge and Flatus.
General Washington to his coxswain, “Go with the floe!”
Craig. I entirely agree with this post.
I’m worn-out, trained-out, Bibled-out, Second-Inauguraled-out and altogether-Lincoln-comparisoned-out. Even Lincoln didn’t know he was Lincoln yet when he became president. For all we knew he was trying to imitate Washington.
Let’s just get on with the Inauguration, which is historic in its own right, and take the rest one step at a time.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/16/opinion/polls/main4728399.shtml
“Bush’s Final Approval Rating: 22 Percent
CBS News/N.Y. Times Poll Finds President Will Leave Office With Lowest Final Approval Rating Ever
Mr. Bush’s final approval rating is the lowest final rating for an outgoing president since Gallup began asking about presidential approval more than 70 years ago”
Yesterday I opined that I would enjoy a conversation with Sen Feinstein held over a Scrabble board. I spent the rest of the day looking at the parade of politicians on c-span. I didn’t see another that I thought I could have an interesting, collaborative discussion on how to solve the world’s problems.
So, it will just be Feinstein, Stinky, and me.
Oh, the situation with North Korea is once again becoming ominous.
“Even Lincoln didn’t know he was Lincoln yet when he became president. For all we knew he was trying to imitate Washington.”
Well said, Lard, very well said.
It’s a lovely day in Harpers Ferry. Okay it is cloudy and a little chilly but at least we made this far. There was extra security at the DSM airport. I wonder if other airports were doing the same thing.
Off to the concert this afternoon and a reception with fellow Iowans tonight. Later.
Yes, indeed, Lard. Lordy, Lordy.
Hope you have a fantastic time, Zoey!
all aboard just one more time for train trivia:
“The last president-elect who took an inaugural train trip to Washington is Dwight D. Eisenhower. On Jan. 18, 1953, Eisenhower, accompanied by his family and staffers, boarded a five-car special train for the journey from New York’s Pennsylvania Station to Washington….
The first president-elect to ride a passenger train to an inauguration was William Henry Harrison in 1841. He was also the first presidential candidate to campaign by train.
In 1845, president-elect James K. Polk also traveled to Washington for inauguration by train. On March 3, 1913, Woodrow Wilson boarded a 14-car special train in Princeton, N.J., that would carry him to his swearing-in. As the train pulled out of the station, Wilson stood on the observation platform of the last car, waving to the crowd.
After Eisenhower, all president-elect chose air travel for inauguration.”

LL, Thanks for sharing your insightful perspective.
Air travel is out. if auto executives can’t fly to Washington, no one else should either.
a first, no doubt.

Patsi -- morning quibble it was Teddy Roosevelt
Craig -- I agree about over run on all the “great man” and Lincoln comparisons. One thought in his favor, the modern Presidency is so walled off and untouchable from the public that at least this train trip allowed for more people to see and touch. His only real guarantee of success is finding a way to step outside the bubble of the powerful and attempt to stay in touch with the street. Maybe this was a down payment on that idea.
Patsi,
Did you read that Delay quote, “DeLay: Why not “a nice little chicken dinner”? ” What would he suggest for dessert: Watermelon?
cary grant also blows the bugle and yells “charge” in frustration and runs up the stairs……it brings teddy brewster, who thinks he is teddy roosevelt, out of his room……..
lol
Let’s prosecute Pelosi for gross ineffectiveness.
I’m looking forward to Alexander’s poem. Still love Maya Angelou’s, “On the Pulse of Morning” from the Clinton inaugural

“He looks so puffed up…”
patsi, like that old expression puffed up like a poisoned pup?
Mortimer Brewster: Look, Aunt Martha, men don’t just get into window seats and die!
Abby Brewster: We know, dear. He died first.
Mortimer Brewster: Wait a minute! Stop all this. Now, look, darling, how did he die?
Abby Brewster: Oh, Mortimer, don’t be so inquisitive. The gentleman died because he drank some wine with poison in it.
Mortimer Brewster: How did the poison get in the wine?
Martha Brewster: Well, we put it in wine, because it’s less noticeable. When it’s in tea, it has a distinct odor.
Mortimer Brewster: You mean, you… You put it in the wine!
Abby Brewster: Yes. And I put Mr. Hoskins in the window seat, because Reverend Harper was coming.
Mortimer Brewster: Now, look at me, darling. You mean, you mean you knew what you’d done and you didn’t want the Reverend Harper to see the body?
Abby Brewster: Well, not at tea. That wouldn’t have been very nice.

Solar,
It isn’t that we aren’t sympathetic to those innocents killed. For me it is a deep anger that it is so unnecessary. Hamas and terrorists like them use their own people for political ends leading to their injuries and death. Yes the instrument Hamas uses is provoking Israel to defend itself so that they can blame Israel in propaganda, but it is the terrorists who are the cause.

“It would take more than KABOOM to clean up all that oily ooze.”
Ha Ha-So true Jamie,I use KABOOM daily on the job and I love it but cleanup after a Rush explosion, nothing short of a nuclear explosion could do that…………..
“Patsi -- morning quibble it was Teddy Roosevelt ”
Don’t know who this one is for….maybe patd?
I feel that Hamas are no good M-- Fer’s,,,and that all the Palestinian peoplewant is to have their land and homes back—-they have been there for almost 2 thousand years,,,as apposed to 100 years or so,,,,,,that the Israel’s have,,,,we are killing kids (this is y biggest bitch) with white phosphorus,,,a chemical that eats the flesh to the bone,,,,,,not once have I seen an empathy for them,,,,,they don’t have the US (the Palestinians)giving them 5 bill, so they kinda have to use some propaganda in order t o catch the worlds attention,,,,,what would you do,,if those were your kids?,,,,the same thing!!!! —it is the tone,,,,fuck em!!!
Last word—-I use bulldozers to clean up work sites before I start to build a house,,,,,,I wonder how many more bodies will be found by them—-700--to 1000 more ?? figure out a way how to get Hamas with that 5 bill,,,and stop killing babies.
Patsi,
You’re right. It was Patd. They were discussing Arsenic and Old Lace and she had said the charging character was Grant rather than Roosevelt., but I was so asleep when I wrote it that I didn’t realize she was talking about Carey Grant not Ulysses.
“Stop using babies as human shields and I suspect far less of them would be killed. ”
Jamie—-read this over,,,and over,,,, and tell me,,,,what in here shows any sadness for babies, that are being killed,,,,read it again before you defend it,,,,,maybe he could have said,,,,,,while I also feel a sadness for those innocents killed,,,,I wish that they wouldn’t use them as shields,,,and a lot less of them would be killed,,,,,this would have been a statement from some one with a little sympathy no????
Solar,
They shouldn’t have left those homes in the first place. If you don’t someone to move into your house don’t abandon it. They were asked to stay and many did, but the surrounding countries were using them as propaganda tools and weapons even then. When they were locked out of the homes they left, the countries that wanted to attack Israel refused to give them new ones and made sure they stayed in those camps so pictures could be displayed to the world.
Finally Egypt has reached an agreement with Israel. It now looks as if Syria is about to try to do the same. Jordan is pretty stable. Now if Iran will just stop stirring the pot, maybe peace has a chance one more time. But take note: It will NOT be Israel that fires first if peace is broken.
Solar,
It wasn’t cold. It was a statement of fact. Hamas placed their weapons where that child lived. It was a cold hearted, manipulative act designed to use a deceased child as an image.
On top of that, there is no proof that it was a picture of a current event or even that it was the result of Israeli’s using the phosphorus. Placing blame before facts are known is using emotion rather than sense. It simply wouldn’t be the first time by a long shot that Hamas or Hezbollah had killed their own people in an attempt to blame Israel.
I will reserve judgement until the facts are known.
” …………….. wasn’t Barack Obama’s second coming to Washington just a little bit odd? ”
Only if one considers flying into Washington on the Eron jet “normal”.
Solar,
Here is the Red Cross report on the White Phosphorus. As you can read, who is using it and where is still open to question.
http://features.csmonitor.com/globalnews/2009/01/14/red-cross-no-evidence-israel-is-using-white-phosphorus-illegally/
Jamie
That completely surprises me, not one word for those children,,now I know that there are Compassionate Liberals,,,,just as there are Compassionate Republlicans,in the sense that they call themselves compassionate, just words,,not one word for the past, or present, or future babies killed,,,,,,,so if it is proven that white phosphorous did what it intended to do,,,,,,you would show some sympathy, I hope that it is proven that no one--especially babies died that kind of death,,,,a bullet or being crushed by concrete is a much better way to die,,,I guess,,,
Solar,
You are missing the whole point. Because I do feel for those innocents on both sides, I want the grown ups to stop killing them. The only way for that to happen is for the terrorists to stop trying to destroy Israel.
Could it be that you have so little sympathy for teenagers out dancing in a club that end up with pieces of their bodies strewn across a city street that you don’t mind it happening because the Palestinians want their houses back?
Thought for the day :

How prophetic can one try to be? or one tries to place their feet in prophetic foot steps… so is that pathetic?
Glad to see all is getting back on track
Barack Obama’s second coming to Washington if this is a second coming to which first are you referring?
“Oh Solar, won’t you ever realize they hate us because we are free?”
Champ—I don’t think that at all,,,,I think that it might just be the Winning, side,,and Im right ,,,,that counts here,,,,I don’t know,,,,but hate is not what I want to say it is,,
Champ,,,,I hope that some of that goes after the inauguration,,,,he won,,,,and the feeling i get is that some are still fighting,,,,going to be a big rush for them,,,,for the next few day’s and then lets see what happens
as far as being free,,,,its great isn’t it,,,,,,
Yeah, I haven’t seen a lick of inauguration coverage on the boob-tube, so I’m not really wrapped-up in inauguration fever. Some of my friends are, however, and it’s pretty nauseating. Like I said, I’ll believe it (change?) when I see it

Champ
The change I believe is going to surprise some of people that expect miricales,,,the ones that expect his to fulfill just a cple of his promises are more in line with the way things are,,,,no $ to do it all,,,,,I will settle for an economy fix,,,,,the rest can come later,,,,,nothing can be done until that happens,,,,,,but he is not going to look like the miracle maker,,,,just like another President,,,a good one,, a bad one ,,, a mediocre one???? don’t know,,,,but Im wishing for a great one,,,,,for all our sakes?? I do think that the Independent number of voters will grow,,, either way

I’ll start holding my breath… NOW!
Good list—--and don’t forget lobbyist reform—tax reform absolutely ,,,,there should be no corp. tax shelters for them out side of the U S,,,,and a flat and sales tax,,,should make things a little more transparent ,,,,too much tax $ not accounted for?? thanks Champ—later

All of which has nothing to do with Ms Pelosi.
wow, a new biden! brief, succinct and to the point. now that’s change.
My son just phoned from the concert. He said it’s freezing cold, but very cool.
Scrabble-tile keyboard
http://boingboing.hexten.net/2009/01/17/scrabbletile-keyboar.html
We have already printed the cover and book jacket for the Obama Inaugural picture book. It is funny to read the blurb on the book jacket describing an event that hasn’t happened yet.
“Scrabble-tile keyboard”
That is simply too cool!
My son said the jumbotrons are great — he said even in that mega-crowd, it was almost like having a front row seat — said Obama was singing along with Garth on American Pie. (not on stage, of course….from his seat)
I was taken aback a bit by this quote from the CQ article on the event:
“The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke”
More royalties for Don McClain, the song that just keeps on giving: American Pie.

Patd,
Solar being from Mexico originally is more of an expert about Spanish than I am but Gordito (m.) or Gordita (f.) would be correct.
hey, no fair………..sarah palin got 20 minutes of fame……
It seems to me that the train ride and all that jazz is for the effect, for the people. It certainly seems to be working as people are eating it up. More power to the train ride, as more than anything we need something upbeat.
I haven’t been watching it and am ignoring the news shows and discussions because I tend to get a reverse reaction to it all. I’m not effected by the show -- maybe I’m just cold -- but I think the average person gets caught up in it. and I don’t mind it, if they just wouldn’t vote on their emotions.
There wasa a comment on the tv screen that said the people were having their spirits lifted by the plane landing on the Hudson.
Of course they were. They were seeing someone who was in charge ACTUALLy doing what he was supposed to do -- knowing what he was supposed to do, being capable of doing it, and doing it. Add to that there was the resst of the crew that excelled.
We haven’t seen capability or execution or responsibility or success in 8 damn years. Of course, we are thrilled with the safe crash, and Obama is
creating an image of more success. It’s an illusion that might come true. I can’t fault him on this.
Bethy

I don’t know if I can speak or write Spanish any better than you do,,,I was brought here when I was 4-5 years old,,,,ran away from home at 12,,,,back at 16years old and the Marines at 17,,,,I learned to read and write on my own,,,and speak it also,,anyway I think that you probably can do a better job of it..but I will try to when Im asked,,,,thanks
“—only the people that think that white phosphorous is ok to use—-but I don’t think it is an easy issue for any one including the Palestinians. ”
Solar, Where did anyone say that it was ok to use phosphorous on children. It is these leaps into emotional accusations that make discussing the issue with you almost impossible.
The Israelis started a unilateral cease fire. After two days Hamas has agreed they will observe the cease fire. The Israelis have started to withdraw from Gaza. Syria is talking about being willing to talk. Now if Hamas doesn’t start shooting again, maybe there is a chance for change.
I asked several times if it was ok for it to be used,,,,,and also said that —-that was my main objection,,,asked to just say that it was not ok to be used,,and that was and is my biggest problem with all of this,,

At last -- something else to love. I’m so happy for you all.
Solar -- I emphatically don’t think it’s all right to use white phosphorous on children -- actually on any living thing. I hope that makes you feel better, but you seemed to be saying that no one else here was anguished re children being killed. That is what I was speaking to.
I don’t know that white phosphorous is being used by Israel or Hamas or anyone else. Most of what is being done there is illegal here, including inciting to riot and conspiracy to commit murder and genocide. The whole area is a war zone and law isn’t in control -- that’s why I hate using dead children as a rallying cry. It is far beyond that.
Gonna go play with my darlings and marvel at their healthy minds and bodies as they run around and scream and pretend to be scared of monster gammy and monster auntie!

I suspect you will start feeling about me as you do about Gordo but I just cant let Obamas decision to appoint Geithner as the SOT go.
I spent last night and a good bit of time today trying to find info on the Internet to help me understand why Geithner is such a good choice in these tough financial times. I found nothing really reassuring except that many Dems and Repubs like the idea and are willing to overlook his blatant IRS error.
It was mentioned that the stock market went up when his nomination was announced. I guess we can start using the stock market as our crystal ball. Up means definitely yes, down, a definite no and no change is a, maybe, check again later.
It reminds me of what happened after 911. We had a serious security crisis in this country so many were willing to let our government make many bad decisions in the name of security. We are and will continue to pay for those decisions. Now we have a serious financial crisis and I fear the same will happen again.
I watched several programs today where someone on Obamas team was questioned about Geithners nomination, after what I would consider a flimsy response, the question was dropped. Again it reminds me of what happened at the start of the Iraq war. No one wants to question the person in power.
The economy affects all of us Is there only one man in this country with the right knowledge/experience to handle the SOT job? I would prefer one we can have faith in.
Change has come to America. I hope that doesnt just mean the color of the president or the political party in power but the ethics and the honesty in how the government operates.
Ct -- you have a very valid point and made it beautifully. I have a hunch, tho, that we’re gonna have to wait and see.
Colorado Bob,
alert alert…I read in the paper today that the Trans Texas Corridor MAY not be dead yet. As of today, no contracts have been canceled or any boards dissolved. This may mean that the project is still on and has now been moved underground.

Palm oil frenzy threatens to wipe out orangutans
TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK, Indonesia — Hoping to unravel the mysteries of human origin, anthropologist Louis Leakey sent three young women to Africa and Asia to study our closest relatives: It was chimpanzees for Jane Goodall, mountain gorillas for Dian Fossey and the elusive, solitary orangutans for Birute Mary Galdikas.
Nearly four decades later, 62-year-old Galdikas, the least famous of his “angels,” is the only one still at it.

Timothy F. Geithner vs Obama
“Geithners father, Peter F. Geithner, is the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation in New York. During the early 1980s, Peter Geithner oversaw the Ford Foundations microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham-Soetoro, mother of President-elect Barack Obama, and they met in person at least once.”

Ct -- the conondrum rests on the possibility that a man we have questions about might just be the best one to help us.
I think we need to make it clear that we are watching closely, and then let the pres make the decision.
The problem is who is going to watch closely! It has to be someone who understands the situation, and I’m not sure who that is. but I’m totally in tune with you apprehension.

‘Lost in Space’ actor Bob May dies at 69 in Calif.
“He was a smoker,” Lockhart remembered. “From time to time (when he was on a break), we’d see smoke coming out of the robot. That always amused us.”

Hi Bethy,
Anyway no biggy.
Just wanted to follow up on last nights comments.
It’s apparent to me that we were both misunderstanding each other. I was bringing up the Supremes in the context of Gordo’s riff about Obama’s ineligibility and nothing to do with investigating GWB. I thought I was following up on Ping’s comments, but not sure now.
DBC- no prob. I’m in that same ‘not sure boat’ now. I just remember noticing a scotus reference andhad to comment. thanks for your response.
Actually, I wanted to say “not sure now” boat, rather than ‘not sure boat’ now.
The trouble is always in the adverbs.
Okay, I’ll shut up.
