Now that the epochal train trip is behind us, wasn’t Barack Obama’s second coming to Washington just a little bit odd? Meant to encourage even more strained comparisons to Abraham Lincoln, there is a big difference.

Lincoln took the train from Illinois to Washington for his first inaugural because that’s what people did when they needed to make such a long trip. He had to take the train. It wasn’t for show.

If Lincoln had done what Obama did — embrace the memory of past presidents by emulating their mode of transportation — Old Abe would have already been in Washington, but then boarded a train to Philadelphia, returning on a horse.

Craig. I entirely agree with this post.
I’m worn-out, trained-out, Bibled-out, Second-Inauguraled-out and altogether-Lincoln-comparisoned-out. Even Lincoln didn’t know he was Lincoln yet when he became president. For all we knew he was trying to imitate Washington.
Let’s just get on with the Inauguration, which is historic in its own right, and take the rest one step at a time.

all aboard just one more time for train trivia:
“The last president-elect who took an inaugural train trip to Washington is Dwight D. Eisenhower. On Jan. 18, 1953, Eisenhower, accompanied by his family and staffers, boarded a five-car special train for the journey from New York’s Pennsylvania Station to Washington….
The first president-elect to ride a passenger train to an inauguration was William Henry Harrison in 1841. He was also the first presidential candidate to campaign by train.
In 1845, president-elect James K. Polk also traveled to Washington for inauguration by train. On March 3, 1913, Woodrow Wilson boarded a 14-car special train in Princeton, N.J., that would carry him to his swearing-in. As the train pulled out of the station, Wilson stood on the observation platform of the last car, waving to the crowd.
After Eisenhower, all president-elect chose air travel for inauguration.”

Patsi -- morning quibble it was Teddy Roosevelt
Craig -- I agree about over run on all the “great man” and Lincoln comparisons. One thought in his favor, the modern Presidency is so walled off and untouchable from the public that at least this train trip allowed for more people to see and touch. His only real guarantee of success is finding a way to step outside the bubble of the powerful and attempt to stay in touch with the street. Maybe this was a down payment on that idea.

It isn’t that we aren’t sympathetic to those innocents killed. For me it is a deep anger that it is so unnecessary. Hamas and terrorists like them use their own people for political ends leading to their injuries and death. Yes the instrument Hamas uses is provoking Israel to defend itself so that they can blame Israel in propaganda, but it is the terrorists who are the cause.

They shouldn’t have left those homes in the first place. If you don’t someone to move into your house don’t abandon it. They were asked to stay and many did, but the surrounding countries were using them as propaganda tools and weapons even then. When they were locked out of the homes they left, the countries that wanted to attack Israel refused to give them new ones and made sure they stayed in those camps so pictures could be displayed to the world.
Finally Egypt has reached an agreement with Israel. It now looks as if Syria is about to try to do the same. Jordan is pretty stable. Now if Iran will just stop stirring the pot, maybe peace has a chance one more time. But take note: It will NOT be Israel that fires first if peace is broken.

It wasn’t cold. It was a statement of fact. Hamas placed their weapons where that child lived. It was a cold hearted, manipulative act designed to use a deceased child as an image.
On top of that, there is no proof that it was a picture of a current event or even that it was the result of Israeli’s using the phosphorus. Placing blame before facts are known is using emotion rather than sense. It simply wouldn’t be the first time by a long shot that Hamas or Hezbollah had killed their own people in an attempt to blame Israel.
I will reserve judgement until the facts are known.

I’m not effected by the show -- maybe I’m just cold -- but I think the average person gets caught up in it. and I don’t mind it, if they just wouldn’t vote on their emotions.
There wasa a comment on the tv screen that said the people were having their spirits lifted by the plane landing on the Hudson.
Of course they were. They were seeing someone who was in charge ACTUALLy doing what he was supposed to do -- knowing what he was supposed to do, being capable of doing it, and doing it. Add to that there was the resst of the crew that excelled.
We haven’t seen capability or execution or responsibility or success in 8 damn years. Of course, we are thrilled with the safe crash, and Obama is
creating an image of more success. It’s an illusion that might come true. I can’t fault him on this.

Solar, Where did anyone say that it was ok to use phosphorous on children. It is these leaps into emotional accusations that make discussing the issue with you almost impossible.
The Israelis started a unilateral cease fire. After two days Hamas has agreed they will observe the cease fire. The Israelis have started to withdraw from Gaza. Syria is talking about being willing to talk. Now if Hamas doesn’t start shooting again, maybe there is a chance for change.

At last -- something else to love. I’m so happy for you all.
Solar -- I emphatically don’t think it’s all right to use white phosphorous on children -- actually on any living thing. I hope that makes you feel better, but you seemed to be saying that no one else here was anguished re children being killed. That is what I was speaking to.
I don’t know that white phosphorous is being used by Israel or Hamas or anyone else. Most of what is being done there is illegal here, including inciting to riot and conspiracy to commit murder and genocide. The whole area is a war zone and law isn’t in control -- that’s why I hate using dead children as a rallying cry. It is far beyond that.
Gonna go play with my darlings and marvel at their healthy minds and bodies as they run around and scream and pretend to be scared of monster gammy and monster auntie!

I suspect you will start feeling about me as you do about Gordo but I just can’t let Obama’s decision to appoint Geithner as the SOT go.
I spent last night and a good bit of time today trying to find info on the Internet to help me understand why Geithner is such a good choice in these tough financial times. I found nothing really reassuring except that many Dems and Repubs like the idea and are willing to overlook his blatant IRS error.
It was mentioned that the stock market went up when his nomination was announced. I guess we can start using the stock market as our crystal ball. Up means definitely yes, down, a definite no and no change is a, maybe, check again later.
It reminds me of what happened after 911. We had a serious security crisis in this country so many were willing to let our government make many bad decisions in the name of security. We are and will continue to pay for those decisions. Now we have a serious financial crisis and I fear the same will happen again.
I watched several programs today where someone on Obama’s team was questioned about Geithner’s nomination, after what I would consider a flimsy response, the question was dropped. Again it reminds me of what happened at the start of the Iraq war. No one wants to question the person in power.
The economy affects all of us Is there only one man in this country with the right knowledge/experience to handle the SOT job? I would prefer one we can have faith in.
Change has come to America. I hope that doesn’t just mean the color of the president or the political party in power but the ethics and the honesty in how the government operates.

TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK, Indonesia — Hoping to unravel the mysteries of human origin, anthropologist Louis Leakey sent three young women to Africa and Asia to study our closest relatives: It was chimpanzees for Jane Goodall, mountain gorillas for Dian Fossey and the elusive, solitary orangutans for Birute Mary Galdikas.
Nearly four decades later, 62-year-old Galdikas, the least famous of his “angels,” is the only one still at it.
