The most-read newspapers and the largest audience for broadcast news have been easily lured to the “widows and orphans” approach of tax-cutters that resulted in unfair shifting of financial burdens from corporations and the wealthy to ordinary tax payers. Beginning with the Reagan administration of the 1980′s, tax-cutting members of congress and many state legislatures campaigned to cut income taxes, claiming that they caused outrageous harassment of people like poor widows and small-business people, who were intimidated by ruthless auditors of the IRS. Year after year, the cases were highly publicized, all overblown. As a result, drastic cuts were made in the staffing and appropriations of the IRS. The campaign was successful. It crippled the operation of the most efficient and fairest tax, the income tax. (All other methods, like sales taxes, ask the least affluent of the public to pay the highest percentage of their disposable income.) In 2002, the IRS said it lacked auditors to review complex accounts of large corporations, so they had to limit their audits to the returns of middle-class and low-income people. The largest corporations had won the battle to get away with their riches and let working people pay their bills. The media share responsibility in the resulting gross unfairness by reporting uncritically the tax-cutters’ horror stories. The “widows and orphans” technique had worked again with the major media, who seem uneducable on the issue of taxes.
By 2002, workers, shareholders, and the national economy were shaken by the dozens of firms like Enron and major banks that collapsed or were weakened when their undetected use of fraudulent practices and theft shook the economy and left workers unemployed. Some studies suggest that the earlier cutbacks in the IRS contributed to the corporate scandals.

    “A Good Fight”
“Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton picked the right battle this week, calling for an end to Internet censorship and naming governments that suppress the free flow of information — including China, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Tunisia and Uzbekistan.
Her speech, at the Newseum in Washington, had pointed echoes of the cold war, including a warning that “a new information curtain is descending across much of the world.” Anyone who finds that overheated should remember how hard Iran’s government worked to shut down the Web during last summer’s bloody, pro-democracy protests — and the power of the images and words that managed to get through.
Mrs. Clinton also placed the Obama administration squarely on the side of Google in its fight with China over Internet censorship and cyberattacks. She called on the Chinese government to conduct a thorough and transparent review of Google’s accusations that Gmail accounts used by Chinese human rights activists had been hacked into from the mainland. And she called on other American companies to challenge “foreign governments’ demands for censorship and surveillance.”

    “They Still Don’t Get It”
“While the nation was suffering through the worst economy since the Depression, the Democrats wasted a year squabbling like unruly toddlers over health insurance legislation. No one in his or her right mind could have believed that a workable, efficient, cost-effective system could come out of the monstrously ugly plan that finally emerged from the Senate after long months of shady alliances, disgraceful back-room deals, outlandish payoffs and abject capitulation to the insurance companies and giant pharmaceutical outfits.”

“Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is engaged with House progressives, trying to tease out a solution to the health care reform impasse--but he says that at the highest levels of the Senate and the White House, there’s still no plan, and he doubts whether President Obama will insert himself forcefully into the process.
Brown, who traveled with Obama today in Ohio, tells me “I’ve talked to Reid, I’ve talked to Obama. Unclear yet what the strategy is, but clear interest, strong interest in getting as strong a bill as we can get.”

Good post on Hillary Tony. Interesting that she is a lone voice at the moment regarding China. It is rather sad the Liberal Press isn’t giving her much passionate backing, but then they backed Chavez because Bush denounced his abuse of the Press. And Craig might back me up on this. The elite liberal journalists claimed that there is a “code of journalism” that the Press had violated that is as important than the 1 st Amendment. Chavez took one station off the air because it didn’t report news of the attempted coup. If it was FOX, Bear might have agreed with Chavez too. How many Liberal pundits have lambasted the Chinese characterization of our Free Press as “information imperialism”.

Seems the view off what is happening here from Europe is completely missed by all the talking heads here. I think the BBC is going with my suggestion. If I Axelrod, I would be very careful how he crafts Obama as the populist. If he thinks he can FIGHT the GOP on who is the populist and allow the bone-heads like Olberman to tar Brown worse than Beck and Rush, he will once again steer Obama in the wrong direction and the Democratic into utter defeat in November.

Used to come to our house for our big summer barbeques…and he was NEVER truly aware of his “hottie-ness.” If I wanted to — as they say in the South — embarrass the dog out of him, I just brought up his cutie factor. Dumb thing about trying to establish an artist like him at radio: you had to downplay what a guitarist he is. He had to be known as a singer first and a musician second.

    Patsi,
Its amazing to me,even after 8 years of Bush that their BS sells.I still here from Republicans at my gym that Carter was much worse than Bush?I say have you ever sat down and looked at the statistics,so Carter had high interest rates. There weren’t two wars, huge spending and the biggest financial meltdown since the 30′s..

  30. Patsi says:

My favorite comment in the above piece was this:

The Supreme Court decided that we would no longer be a Democracy; we will be a plutocracy, instead. We will have government by, of, and for the wealthiest. We have been headed that way for a long time. But I did not expect it to become explicit and official so abruptly.”

  32. RebelliousRenee says:

    Patsi….
really good article by Charles Blow. In it he mentions that Democrats thought people would be patient. I think they would be if they saw true leadership…. someone fighting for his values. Only an idiot would have expected Obama to turn around the economic mess that Bush left in a year. Only an idiot would have expected him to recreate all the jobs loss by this point. But it’s Obama who’s the idiot if he thinks he can fight for Wall Street and let the average citizen fend for him/her self. Obama is the idiot if he thinks he can pass healthcare reform without fighting for it. Obama is the idiot if he thinks he can get any meaningful legislation passed without a fight in these hyper partisan days.
Obama is proving to those who dubbed him “Obambi” during the primaries that he deserves that moniker. He needs to change that…. and change it fast.

  33. maxtrue says:

Tony, let’s just take some glaring observations that the Press in general have not noticed as most important: 1. There is still no HC Bill to audit or publicly debate 2. The HC process started with Obama secretly cutting deals and ended in disaster with democrats secretly trying to write a final HOUSE BILL 3. Brown didn’t have the word REPUBLICAN anywhere near his stage and rejected attempts by the Press to get him to knock the President 4. A number of Liberal pundits from Krugman to Axelrod called for a response that seems rejected by the American people 5. The leadership on the Left engaged in a secret hit job with the Press as cover to dump Hillary with operatives as pathetic as Edwards who Dem bosses suspected of lying 6. The most important things like (jobs, credit lines, financial regulation and mortgage help), (lowering costs on health care and covering all), and ( really working across the aisle through compromise and smarts) were never pounded home by the Press. As I said, this mess has broken trust with the Indies who will use their clout again along with those Reagan Democrats in the coming elections. I did predict exactly what would happened without some divided government as simple as Democrats not having that bogus supermajority they could never really count on. Obama couldn’t make it work even with 60 votes, Bill got er done with a Republican Congress.
I can think of at least five regulars here who supported Hillary that predicted this would happen. It is nice to know that they never backed down while doing their best to be good Liberals and be patient with Obama.
Obama would have been better served reading TM from time to time. I think some here are not shocked at what is happening no matter how likable Obama is. Yes, he is more likable than Hillary, which many saw as an asset her her, not a reason to betray her flaws and all and watch as Democrats snatched defeat frm victory as some predicted they would do.
    Ironic Brian supported Edwards, eh?

Well I have researched some of this, and I can dig up some quotes from the founders ,if anyone cares, that show that they were very concerned about the ability of wealth to influence elections.
Gouverneur Morris, for instance, raised the issue at the Constitutional Convention. He argued there on the floor that one of the reasons for a republican form of government is for the institutions of government to be protected from wealthy interests. If demagoguery would hold sway, he said, it would always lead the rich to have power over everyone else, because the rich could spend the most money on political speech. But not only did he see this as a reason for the Constitution, though--his argument went on to state that one of the duties of the legislature, when constituted, should be to guard against encroachments by those wealthy interests.
Morris was one of the signers of the Constitution, and I would guess, the Bill of Rights, and I think he would disagree with Scalia’s interpretation.
Before everyone gets bent out of shape with the SCOTUS ruling I do not like personally, please read the history of what is going on before vilifying the Robert Court. This decision did not happen over night and has been a debate ever since our country was founded. Two options it seems 1. Pass a Constitutional Amendment or perhaps the Congress can 2. demand a vote of shareholders before contributions (as I suggested yesterday).
Here is a legal view from the right we might begin with to get familiar t least with the legal problems….

No, that came from much of what Carter has done since. It was under cater that Brez baited the Soviets into Afghanistan and then armed the militants. Carter pulled the rug from the Shah and left in place a regime far worse and more dangerous than the Shah. I could go on, but Carter was a real downer, though he does have some very admirable traits. Calling what happened in the Sudan “not genocide” but Gaza a replica of the concentration camps makes many want to retire him ASAP. And of course, there was the Carter Doctrine, Bush used to remove Saddam….lol.
Later people, have a great day…..

Obama’s first year was not . . . . . That good. And that’s amazing for me to say that. I was pro-Obama from the start and I still think he was the better choice, but man, he had some BIG promises that we need to see if they will happen. Personally I think that are whole mess was Bush. But Regan or Clinton started are downhill spiral. Bush got us all the way up to 5 trillion dollars. Hopefully we will pay it all of if where lucky.
The earthquake in Haiti was horrible. But a lot of buildings may have been destroyed because they weren’t up to code, because (If I’m correct) it’s the poorest country in the western hemisphere, so they could not get the materials to get there buildings up to code. But I still wish that it had never happened.

    Max,
I agree with your comment, except I never thought Obama was more likable than Hillary! I guess i was just to focused on who i felt had the experience and stamina to get things done. The way President Obama has governed doesn’t surprise me.The thing that surprises me his poor treatment of gay people and their core issues.I mean again,at the risk of being told “I’m moaning and bitching” he could have righted some of the wrongs against gay people with a stroke of a pen.I realize though to most these gay issues are of little consequence, but to me they are sacrosanct..

Bill Clinton agrees with you Tony. I think the Black community is a bit against gays and I wonder if Obama was worried. He also didn’t want to give the GOP more ammo, but whatever he thought, it didn’t work out. Obama is not one who REALLY admits mistakes and re-calibrates. What he’s doing now as Solar said is obviously forced. Now Obama is the person people say needs to “change”. How ironic is that as Hillary just being herself seems up to any task set before her.
Experience and a fighter who gets er done. Yes, she was much more likable after the primary to me despite the hit job of Game. A lesser person would have told the Democrats to fuck off……

that’s because dog’s eye mistook fighting for name calling. I recall seeing the movie Cool Runnings…. based on the Jamaican Olympic bobsled team from 1988. Everyone made fun of them. But they believed in themselves. When their sled came apart on their last run, they picked it up and carried it over the finish line. Because they fought for their right to be there by finishing the race, they were respected…. even though they came in DEAD LAST in the competition.
People will respect someone for fighting for what they believe in. Even if they get knocked down.

She was good in Spartucus, although the role didn’t give her much chance to stretch her skills. Where she really in her maturity were the fillms Clouded Yellow, Angel Face, Desiree, Guys and Dolls, Elmer Gantry, and The Happy Ending.
From murderous scheming psycho to frightened, hunted waif, to a cheery and artless teen, to a very serious soul saver who does song and dance routines -- nothing she ever did was mediocre. Simmons was a great WOW of an actress.

As I understand the purpose of a labor union, it’s to allow employees in the same industry to pool together for the purposes of collectively bargaining for favorable employment terms.
If the union sees fit to support certain legislation or candidates in order to achieve that goal, and they were duly elected by the membership, why is it a problem? Especially if it’s not a problem for corporations to do the same thing…

It still doesn’t matter. This business of scandal having something to do with Obama is just so much ratings garbage. It isn’t the President’s mistress putting up a billboard in Times Square, and even if it was other than the screams from the 2nd floor of the WH, what would it have to do with government.
Powerful men have had mistresses just about as long as there have been marriages. Somehow they managed to run countries often with the assistance of those women and when crying was done over their coffin it was often the widow and mistress holding each other together.

One other thing there Westie, the question you need to ask yourself is this. First it wasn’t FOX who put up thos billboards, it was the scorned female.
Second, if MSNBC did put something like that up, who would see it? MSNBC viewership is almost non-existing. Have you seen the ratings lately. FOX has 5 times as many viewers even with their non-primetime shows as does MSNBC. I am beginning to think they, NBC/GE, just keep MSNBC on the air as a tax write off. Kind of like keeping a few negative income rental properties to help offset the income obtained through profitable rentals. It is only a matter of time before MSNBC goes the way as Air America. The country is center right, not center left.

Of course there are 2 types of mistresses/girlfriends. Those who the wife is aware of and tolerates them up to a point, and those the husbands try to keep in closets. But eventually those closet doors get opened and that is when the s*** hits the fan. Tiger, Edwards…

FOX News has never had to retract a story. Correct, but not retract, big difference.
FOX continually beats MSNBC, CNN, and some other cable news associated with CNN combined in every time slot, except maybe weekends. But MSNBC never comes in first in any time slot. FOX of late has even been beating ABC.
For the record, the make-up of the FOX’s viewership is 40% R, 20% D, and 40% I. Wonder how many of those who elected Brown would classify themselves as Teabaggers?
What is odd about that, the (R, D & I) are who helped Brown, the “R” candidate, the boy from left field win the MA Sen. seat that was held for 50 years by D Sen. Ted “The Lion of the Senate” Kennedy. Think about that for a moment, a unknown R wins the Senate seat in one of the bluest of blue states. The writing is on the wall, wake-up and smell the coffee. The US has always been a center right country, not a center left country.
One of my major problems with Obama is that he ran on a pretty center platform, although I think in his heart he never planned to carry through with that agenda, then after elected to office handed the car keys over to Reid and Pelosi. And the actions of those 2 are part of the reason why Obama’s poll rating are so low. Yeah I know, personally people like Obama, they just don’t like what he is doing as POTUS, and he is weakening everyday.

    “After the Massachusetts Massacre”
“Does health care matter? Not as much as you’d think after this yearlong crusade. In the Post/ABC poll, the issue was second-tier — at 24 percent. Obama has blundered, not by positioning himself too far to the left but by landing nowhere — frittering away his political capital by being too vague, too slow and too deferential to Congress. The smartest thing said as the Massachusetts returns came in Tuesday night was by Howard Fineman on MSNBC: “Obama took all his winnings and turned them over to Max Baucus.”
Worse, the master communicator in the White House has still not delivered a coherent message on his signature policy. He not only refused to signal his health care imperatives early on but even now he, like Congressional Democrats, has failed to explain clearly why and how reform relates to economic recovery — or, for that matter, what he wants the final bill to contain. Sure, a president needs political wiggle room as legislative sausage is made, but Scott Brown could and did drive his truck through the wide, wobbly parameters set by Obama.
Ask yourself this: All these months later, do you yet know what the health care plan means for your family’s bottom line, your taxes, your insurance? It’s this nebulousness, magnified by endless Senate versus House squabbling, that has allowed reform to be caricatured by its foes as an impenetrable Rube Goldberg monstrosity, a parody of deficit-ridden big government. Since most voters are understandably confused about what the bills contain, the opponents have been able to attribute any evil they want to Obamacare, from death panels to the death of Medicare, without fear of contradiction.
It’s too late to rewrite that history, but it may not be too late for White House decisiveness. Whatever happens now — good, bad or ugly — must happen fast. Each day Washington spends dickering over health care is another day lost while the election-year economy, stupid, remains intractable for Americans who are suffering.”

A Blackwater or a commercial hospital conglomerate wasting or deceitfully appropriating billions (with charges, convictions, and paybacks) barely ruffles their feathers and the message never reaches the pitchfork crowd with their N word witchdoctor signs on the mall.

If I didn’t know better I would have thought some R wrote that piece, but it was non-other than Frank “The Butcher of Broadway” Rich.
If Obama’s daughters were old enough to drive this health care bill may have passed, but that would have meant Obama would to have to had some hands-on control through the process. He didn’t, and the bill is dead.
It wasn’t just that, but the 2,400 pages that were hard to get your arms around, all of the numerous references pointing to this section of law, to this treaty, to this regulation, to that agreements, and this doesn’t even take into account all the backdoor meetings, special preferential treatment to various organizations, purchasing of votes with tax payer money, and the list goes on and on.
When the Congress can’t explain what it is in the bill, when they provide contradicting statements as to what will and what won’t this health care bill do, when Obama only wants to sign anything so he can take credit for a health care plan he had little contribution into forming, when they point to CBO numbers which never are correct, why is anyone surprised when 65% of Americans don’t the government to come anywhere close to their health care plans.
Has anyone ever looked at the differences between the health insurance plans afforded to Congress and those Congress refer to as the Cadillac health care plan? How far apart are they in both coverage and cost? Or did the Congress exempt themselves from this bill?
The days of the, “I know what is better for you” Congress is nearing an end. They will either start listening to their constituents, or they will be seeking new employment come this Nov. K.I.S.S. It is really that simple.

How many times do I have to make slighting references to him, his selfishness, and his immaturity before you and everyone else recognizes that I piss (metaphorically) on him ? I also piss metaphorically on palin and her campaign crowd for- not just allowing, but precipitating this event. mama gets a $MM/year sinecure, and her child and grandchild have to beg the court for redress ??? WTF kind of family is that ???
For 150 years, no woman in our family ever had to beg succour from the goddam court. The big shots in our family always made sure that the little shots had jobs, and had what they needed. WTF is wrong with this palin bitch ? First she USES her children as props for her f-ing campaign, and next she lets her teenie bopper daughter go w/o support ! It’s unconscionable.

It would make a lot more sense, and be a hell of a lot more dignified, if Bristol’s attorney sued for johnston’s share of the oil money. It’s there, it’s available, and it wouldn’t make Bristol look like a gal who has no support, no job, no family, and only the county & the kindness of strangers to provide for her.
Skrew the palins, especially their alpha dog.
I mean, can you imagine a teen age Chelsea having a baby and then having to ask the County to help her out ??? Republicans would throw the party of the century over that pr coup.

They would be forced to pay dues going toward a candidate they don’t like or an issue they don’t agree with. I see no greater problem with Unions than with corporations that don’t get the approval of their stockholders. My biggest problem at the moment is not that Unions or corporations are now allowed to fund elections, but the theory this is speech by people organized into “groups” is not true. It is the HEAD of such groups using money that the “group” did not approve. I suspect disclosure will be required and I hope that those in the group must approve donations.

Olberman is a damaging force on the Left Jamie. He is a buffoon who can talk. Maddow has a condescending streak that Stewart has made fun of on more than one occasion. They are both so full of themselves.
I don’t know why Fox is relevant in discussing MSNBC. O’Rielly is closer to the center than Olberman and incredibly, less of an ass.
Beck is a pathetic actor who I reargrd as comedy. Hannity is a cheerleader, but neither run a news show. It is just editorialism focused in on the day’s worst behavior by Democrats. He doesn’t try to hide his slant, does he? And fo course more bad acting. Neither tries to imitate a journalist as Maddow and Olberman do every day. Fox has thousands of affialted news programs on TV across the country. Their cable station is a different beast. It is a mixture of partisan op-ed and reporting. MSNBC tries to look more like CNN, but is more op-ed often blathering aginst the interests of Democrats by recycling the same rhetoric on the Right in Liberal clothing.
Perhaps ABC runs close to center. CNN is a patchwork of everything.

Tony, X has a deep dislike of anything Republican. I let it go because I see it is more emotional than rational AT TIMES. I am sure X never intends to vent more than some anger and is hardly sexist. He can be an Olberman at times, but usually calms down. The Senate bill does suck and the President has been missing in action.I think all he ever really wanted was any bill to call it a win.The president showed only verbal support for the Public option and made so many back room deals to screw the every day person. The deal with the unions(I’m a UAW 598 member) was the last straw for me.I hate to see the Dems have such a big loss, but its a win for the American people and the Dems in the end.If the Senate version had become law with the mandated taxes funneled to those thieving Insurance corps, it would have been damaging politically for the Dems forever..Yep, the old Dem in me hates to see another Republican in the Senate, but i think the people of Mass. did us a big favor..

Can you margin Tony, if Democrats don’t get the message. I suspect that Axelrod will be in denial this morning and Puff (is that his name) is now hired to turn the O-team harder to he Left. Was that the message?
The Day of the Nelson deal, what happened in MA? That was the beginning of the end for Coakley.Look, it’s one thing Hillary Clinton to come out of talks and have a moderate Bill endorsed by Republicans. I think she could have done that including lowering costs, reforming waste and fraud, covering almost all, ending the ban on pre-conditions and maybe co-ops. That’s okay because she got the GOP on the train. To come up with ZIP, ZERO Republican endorsement and pathetic deals, unvetted details after six months is absolute crap. What Obama didn’t want to do was WORK beyond cheer-leading.
Let me put it another way: How many articles did he write when he was editor of the Harvard Review? You really think he wrote all the stuff in his books? Funny Sturg…..here is an example:
Reports that an Iranian plane caught fire say how old the Iranian fleet is. And many have crashed lately. These reports imply that sanctions somehow are the fault. This BS was also done in regard to child death reports from Saddam sanctions which were also bogus given the billions Saddam was stealing from”deals”.
However: the planes crashing and burning are RUSSIAN. So Iran will get their Russian reactor started soon, but can’t fix their Russian planes? If you check out aviation weekly and other sources, you get a much better picture of reality. We must all wear anti-bias filters, check multiple sources and use our brains. Then a better picture arises. That is why I post multiple sources here that get filtered from the usual Press. Yes, they have their bias too, but in the blender, they have an important place…

I think your spot on,Obama did cheer-leading.If you really pay attention to what many of the Dems in the Congress had to say, yes, rather delicately then you know its true! I’m more inclined to think the President is very smart, but doesn’t have much in the way of common sense..I love being an Independent, don’t feel the need to be partisan.I see just supporting a Dem just because he or she is a Dem as stupid.I still can’t vote Republican, their party platform SUCKS! Every person in the house is frozen in place as a complete and utter silence follows Wilbur’s outburst……

You folks are barking up the wrong tree. I have always known that child support is a right rather than welfare.
It seems to me that sarah palin, having made two multimillion dollar book deals, plus having secured a multii-million dollar employment contract with faux news, should be able to provide a gainful career opportunity for her daughter, who just turned 19. I do not mean a handout from momma -- but actual work.
As the father of the child is from a petty crime family, and seems to have neither the education nor the inclination to support his child, the court will have the county pay that support, in the hope that the dad will eventually reimburse. That’s the way things work in cases where the dad is a selfish, ignoramous, with no marketable skills. Considering that sarah palin is now a multi-millionaire several times over, it seems to me that taking support from the county just adds to the public burden, when it isn’t necessary considering the family’s new found fortune.
Re my Clinton comparison, I can’t imagine that in a similar situation Bill and Hillary wouldn’t have provided a secure future for teen and baby, including career opportunities. I meant to draw an invidious comparison. I can’t believe that wih their millions, they would have Chelsea go to court to get money out of a cad who has no visible means of support.
And Tony, if you look back therough the record, I have only recently begun to fault palin. However, having heard palin call nearly everyone in the mccain campaign and Dem Party names, and read her quotes, finding fault with nearly everyone who partakes of modern life -- what she has called “the liberal Culture of Death” -- I don’t think any word fits her quite as well as ‘bitch’.

    Dear Bob,
Thanks for your email and fundraising efforts -- £500 is great! The way that we receive donations from JustGiving means that the money you have raised may be spread across several boxes. This is because we receive a payment from them once a week (rather than all in one go when the page has expired) so the money you raise may come in bits and bobs. However, if the £500 was raised all in one week, it may still go to just the one box as we would have received it in one go.
Does this make sense?! I hope so! No matter how the funds you’ve raised are distributed we will still inform you of what boxes they’ve gone towards/ covered.
Best wishes and thank you for your support.

CT is sending me check for $200.00 , It doesn’t appear yet on our donation page. I will add it to Sturg’s saw bucks, and make a PayPal donation in their names when they arrive.
Those numbers added to Mqw’s pledge puts us at over $300.00 into the second box.
Or , over $1,100 in 6 days either given or pledged.
I was worried that these small donations of less than the full box cost would make it so we couldn’t follow where the donation went , but it seems that concern is unfounded.

And before Solar can post that Netanyahu today claimed “a South Jerusalem settlement” Israel’s land “fore eternity” as AP reports, let’s please see through this slanted reporting.
    1. Netanyahu announced the building on Gilo months ago.
    2. The following shows why even Bill Clinton recognizes Gilo as part of the Israel map he handed to Arafat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilo
    3. Hillary Clinton rescued Obama’s failed strategy and demanded both sides to consider the new map of resolution. Netanyahu did respond by halting some settlement construction but affirming plans at Gilo. If he doesn’t do this given his following the US lead on Iran and Syria, his domestic support is a mess.
    4. What the AP doesn’t report is that until Hamas executes a sniper that killed and Egyptian guard, Egypt is holding off unity talks and building its ultimate security wall with the French and US help.
The following are the things so far that “surprised” Obama:
    1. Opposition to Cap and Trade

    Max,
I wouldn’t do any such thing with Fox News. I firmly believe that if a network is engaged in lawful behavior, let them be. My only problem with Fox is that they claim to be fair and balanced when they obviously aren’t.
To say they are fair and balanced is like saying that the Polish Cavalry, on horseback, had a fighting change to stop German Panzer divisions during the initial blitzkrieg.
I like to use the expression, “If you’re going to burn a cross on my lawn, have the balls to take off the hood” In other words, don’t hide behind a mask to be who you really are.
As for the union vs corporation question, at least each union member knows that their vote counts and is no more important than the next member.
With a corporation, votes are apportioned by the number of shares you own so in theory, one person with a 50.1% stake in the company can decide how to spend the $$$ and that’s why corporations will have a significant advantage.

    True Bear,
The issue of how individuals give fair expression to what the corporation ends up saying or giving seems the place where Congress might act. There seems sound Constitutional grounds for government to see that elections are fair. I think in the weeks to come this issue will be kicked around. Maybe a Constitutional Amendment is in order. Ironically, Dems ought to ask what our founders intended. Ironic yes? The issue of the wealthy influencing elections was a debate at the time. McCain says campaign reform is dead and I’m sure Obama is surprised by this.
Obama has his narrative (or Axelrod and Plouff). Fox certainly has theirs. Both will cherry pick and exaggerate the facts. CNN goes back and forth. The idea of imposing some balance referee would make Franklin laugh I suppose, but I rather doubt George Washington would have liked future elections controlled with Press bias, Corporate and Labor capital pushing the average citizen further from deciding their own future. At the moment I have no answer other than that the present situation is worrisome.

“Nothing like having a fundraiser in the middle of couple gun fights in the street.”
We all have our own way to help out the ones that need them…I train some of them for construction work, so the can get jobs, when they can….some of them are even union workers that are working now……stick the the good work, and leave these comments out of it….they are just as bad as 95% of the thought for the day ones…….

I had that British page up and running before I stumbled across the American side. As I understand it our donations being American, are not paying a fee to the British fund raising platform. They are taking the British Tax credit in lew of a fee. I was thinking about adding that American version for that solar project in the north of the island.
They finally up dated the page which reads as follows -
    Help Us Help Haiti
Sun Ovens International has been working in Haiti for the past 11 years. During that time the deforestation has increased the need for an alternative to cooking with wood and charcoal. The recent earthquake has intensified the need for solar cooking and water purification. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians are homeless and camps will need to be opened to provide food and shelter for Haiti’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Plans are under way to provide Sun Ovens to the IDPs in Haiti. We are partnering with the Friends of Haiti to provide Sun Ovens to the IDPs in Haiti. We are partnering with the Friends of Haiti Organization (FOHO) to send as many Sun Ovens as we can to Haiti. On January 28, 2010, FOHO, in partnership with Feed My Starving Children, will be sending a shipping container with 270,000 meals and Sun Ovens to Port au Prince, Haiti. There is room for additional Sun Ovens to be included with this shipment and additional shipments are being planned.
Donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated. Checks should be made payable to:
    Friends of Haiti Organization
    PO Box 222
    Holland, OH 43528
(Please note the donation is for the Sun Oven project.)
FOHO is a 501C3 nonprofit organization so all donations will be tax deductable. 100% of the donation will go directly to sending Sun Ovens to Haiti. No administrative expenses will be deducted. FOHO has been working in Haiti for 45 years and has sent over 1,400 Global Sun Ovens and 12 Villager Sun Ovens to Haiti.

I’ll set-up a page for these guys as well, using the American platform We can start buying ovens, and put some people to work, in a place were the quake didn’t destroy everything :
    ” Assembly
The GLOBAL SUN OVENS® are being assembled at a vocational school located at Evangelical Baptist Church (EBC) in Lambert. The tooling and training required to assemble the ovens in Haiti has been provided, this will reduce the final cost of the ovens by more than 50%.”

Max, I was trolling upthread and saw your queston. Nothing like a hot topic with no certain answer to start the day. I have usually taken the position that money indeed is not speech, but then I have taken the position that the War on Terror is not was (at least not in any conventional sense of the word). I do come and go on the issue, and all I can say is that the Supreme Court has decided that money is speech when it buys political speech. That issue doesn’t give me heartburn or cause me to lose sleep nearly as much as the idea that corporations are afforded the constitutional right to freedom of speech as if they are citizens of the US. Now THAT does give me heartburn and causes me to lose sleep (well, figuratively at least) -- and here’s why -- on the one hand I hear arguments that GM (or WalMart) is entitled to contitutional rights, and on the other that prisoners who have been accused of plotting, planning, participating in, etc. terror activities should NOT, irrespective of whether they are US citizens or not. I find this deeply troubling.

good morning (I actually first typed good moroning.)
Rough weekend…the financial squeeze continues. A few thoughts away from Haiti (congrats on the amazing effort for the boxes).
    1) I was so surprised how quickly President Obama yanked away our lovely Christmas Eve gift of health. Took back the box before we could even open it! Sure pissed away a lot of money on the gift and no returns!
    2) The dems complain about Sarah Palin being a quitter and they have already given-up on health care. They are bigger quitters. Na-na.
    3) I have thought about Massachusetts and why Ted wasn’t grooming or mentoring a replacement? Then I heard the news about Biden’s son and maybe that is the reason.
    4) I am a registered independent and pulled a surprise focus group on myself this weekend. I have always voted democratic only to keep out the republicans. This is flawed, of course. I do not think a third party candidate can make it in America. At this point, the weak dems aren’t any better and if they think the meek shall inherit the earth, who the wants it after the republican’ts are done trashing it! I feel somewhat doomed. Tossed away votes.

    Settlements
Port-au-Prince is now a city where most people are sleeping outside at night (estimates put it at 80 percent of the residents). I drove back to our camp just after dark a couple of nights ago, rushing to meet our own night-time curfew. At street corner after corner, people had blocked access to their blocks by placing stones in the way. They didn’t want vehicles rushing blindly in and injuring sleeping families. I looked up these blocks and saw winding ribbons of re-created bedrooms, demarcated with bedsheets and string, as far as my eyes could see in the dark. So many homes were destroyed or severely weakened, and the fear of aftershocks remains palpable.

  347. Blonde wino says:

pogo…in a society where health care is provided by employers and the unemployment rate is over 10+% and the underemployment rate especially for the 50+ demographic is a lot higher, health care collapses. Underemployed folks and self-employed folks have a harder time affording insurance. Why is Washington so slow to understand this?

Blondie, I don’t get it (government’s lack of understanding of the problem) either. But I think the argument goes something like “why should I have to pay…” well, because there are those who can’t whose needs for the same are as great or greater than your own -- (like your parents, asshole). Sounds too much like socialism for their delicate sensibilities. Stupid assholes (dispensation for the donation, Craig). Almost EVERY US citizen ends up in universal healthcare if they live long enough to retire. I guess it’s only socialist if the participants are younger than 65. Did I say stupid assholes?

Thanks for comments NewPOgo. I thought that maybe you could join the conversation from a legal advantage, even discussing the matter with Simon. From what I gather so far, Congress would be on solid ground were it to set up a “fair” way those “people” organized into Unions and Corporations have a say in what THEIR corporations does )as an extension of free speech). I think people reacted harshly to the idea that the few at the top get to use their company’s assets to support their personal agenda. This wouldn’t be the corporations talking, just those at the top. If such money then skews the election process, government has a role in keeping speech and elections fair.
I brought up the hot topic because I do not have a solid understand of the Constitutional issues as you often seem to have.

Nearly 100 tonnes of additional aid is being flown to Haiti this week as thousands of people who lost their homes in the devastating earthquake are being given the chance to start rebuilding their lives in ShelterBox tents.

Hundreds more ShelterBoxes containing disaster relief tents and other life-saving supplies are being sent to the city in the next few days from Miami, Curucao and France, meaning another 11,000 people will be given emergency shelter.

Re: Supreme Court hands control of US govt to big business.
U.S. Corporations are a recent (1850s) legal creation that were designed to permit the concentration of large amounts of capital (from millions of stockholders). This allowed the undertaking of massive capital-intensive projects, like the Erie Canal or, later, inter-state railroads that would not have been possible for proprietorships or partnerships. (We allowed corporations to come intoi existence because they served a useful purpose.)
Since the 1850s corporate boards have unceasingly sought to use their economic power to exert political power. Until now, the legal system has been blocked them.
If nothing is done about the Supreme Court’s decision allowing unlimited campaign ads by corporations, you can just take the U.S. Constitution and throw it in the toilet because corporations WILL use their economic power to control who gets elected. (They will be COMPELLED to do this because if they don’t their competitors will do it, in order to gain an advantage in the market.)
The USA will become a radical experiment: a government controlled by some kind of dominant coalition of big businesses. Who knows what will happen? The only models we have of such a society are offered by science fiction. And they are NOT attractive prospects.
If you think the current crop of politicians are bad, wait until you see what corporate CEOs give us. In all of human history, you couldn’t find a more greedy, ruthless, elitist, amoral, bunch of pirates. (OK the ancient Roman aristocrats were pretty bad.)
The Romans had a “republic” but the aristocrats controlled the voting of ordinary citizens through economic domination.
So perhaps ancient Rome is a good model of what’s ahead for us.

As the USA morphs into ancient Rome I guess I’m lucky that I’m too old to be a gladiator.
I’d probably be one of those poor bastards who got stuck with a trident and a net. They were routinely slaughtered by the guys who were given swords.
(For all you youngsters out there, keep this in mind if you get a choice of weapons.)

Nash, you might want to check out links above as to the history and options dealing with the ruling. Seems to me Obama loves the corporate head at Smart Materials. Lincoln had to execute a slave trader before the Liberal Press in New York got in line with the agenda. We have witnessed far more corporate greed and inhumanity in the past. Just read Zinn’s History of the United States. But then there are the other systems. Between communists, facists and Islamists, how many died?

My favorite gladiator movie, by the way, is “Barabus” with Anthony Quinn.
It got me through college because whenever I wanted to drop out I’d say, “OK, this sucks, but it’s better than gladiator school.”

Max, I’m not going to get involved in legal discussions online at sites run by folks with more knowledge of the issues than I have and with their own slant on the issues. Lawyers and their ilk seldom get very far toward solving issues -- they just like to talk them to death. Like I said, I think the core of the problem is giving citizen status to corporations. (Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific RR -- 1886). As Nash pointed out, they became a creature in the US because they were useful for certain purposes. The road to hell being paved with good intentions, we’re a long way down that road now.
Here’s a (slanted) history of corporation in the U.S.

More of the same, isn’t that what he kept talking about during the campaign? Guess he really meant it. And regarding the ma vote the pols and talking heads are talking over, around & upside down the one factor they just don’t want to bring up, guess they want to keep working. Hillary won MA primaries with a 26 point lead.

5 days before the Kent State shootings, I broke my ball point in a bio -- lecture, and jumped on one of the only 10 speed bikes on the campus of Texas Tech, rode to the admin. building , and dropped out of college.
There were 200 people in that room, just like a Greek theater, except we had the miserable little wooded seats with the drop down writing surface.
I looked down the row to my right. and saw all these Bic pens flying across the spiral notebooks. I looked left to the same view, I broke my Bic, and stood up and said, ” That’s it, I’m done here ! ”
It broke my mother’s heart, one of 10,000 breaks I gave her heart ….
That’s why I was working on her garden on Jan 5th. The 3rd season on this garden.
