Roll Call Politics now says VA Sen. Jim Webb’s seat is up for grabs. That’s another sign of Democratic woe. Former Sen. George Allen is coming on strong. Considered a GOP presidential contender until his “macaca” gaffe, Allen is rehabilitating his political fortunes and making no secret of his intentions to take on Webb. Although raising money, Webb has been coy about whether he’ll even run for reelection. Allen has aimed some direct shots that indicate he will try to label Webb a liberal, based in part on the Democrat’s 100 percent support for legislation backed by labor unions.

The macaca incident seems to have spawned a whole new campaign industry --the tracker --whose sole purpose is to catch anyone connected to the campaign in a gaffe. It was the subject of the most recent episode of the Good Wife..
There is a snide meanness and sense of entitlement about Allen that I find very distasteful. Can’t say I’m a major Webb fan, but of the two I think he probably serves his constituency better.
Allen’s a pig. At least Webb’s my kind of porker.

There is something very special about he goes on with his business at hand….often telling the people that were interviewing him….( Matthews, I think) that if they wanted a serious grown-up conversation….then he would talk to them…but that he would not be part of the normal bs.!!

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) -- An Army doctor who disobeyed orders to deploy to Afghanistan because he questions Barack Obama’s eligibility to be president has pleaded guilty to one of two charges against him.
At a court-martial proceeding Tuesday in Maryland, Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin of Greeley, Colo., pleaded guilty to not meeting with a superior when ordered to do so and not showing up at Fort Campbell in Kentucky where he was supposed to report. A judge spent the morning questioning him about his guilty plea.
As a result of the plea, he faces up to 18 months in prison and dismissal from the Army. Lakin pleaded not guilty to a second charge of missing a flight he was required to be on. His court-martial at Fort Meade is continuing on that charge.

But please tell me nobody fell for the DADT flim-flam. Joe Lieberman works for the Department of Defense. They did not want “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repealed. The surest sign of that was when James Amos, Obama’s pick to lead the Marine Corps, said he opposed repealing DADT now. He would never have done that to his Commander in Chief without permission. It was an unmistakeable dog whistle to anyone who knew what they were listening for: the White House did not want this. And, clearly they don’t. Obama has the authority to make it happen if he wants. And you don’t see him waving that Presidential pen around, looking for a signing statement.
And so Lieberman was picked to run the show in the Senate. Know why so many Republicans piped up and said they’d support ending DADT? ‘Cos they knew they’d never have to take a vote. Lieberman put on a fine show, replete with press conferences and breathless announcements, then he and Susan Collins went through a superb theatrical moment as the whole thing melted down in “procedural issues” (cough).
