GOP’s VP Bench
It seems likely the party’s next presidential nominee will not come from Congress, which could put Capitol Hill lawmakers in contention for running mate. Roll Call’s Christina Bellantoni looks at the pros and cons for 14 up-and-coming Republicans who make her “longish short list.”

Woo Woo. Clear the Bench!
Thune is supposed to be one of the best “dark horse” candidates for president.
Bachman would be “Palin II” and the sequel is always worse (except for Godfather II).
Cantor: wrong religion.
Rubio: wrong race, color, and/or ethnicity.
Paul: wrong century.
Where is Nikki Haley, Governor of S. Carolina?
And where is Scott Walker? (OK. Maybe he’s even too toxic for the zealots in GOP primaries.)
Not going into hiding…considering a bet, plus I watched 2 hours of burger shows on Food network today and it got me thinking…
Posted by: Bear Author Profile Page | March 20, 2011 7:29 PM
For betting purposes pizza or burgers
What’s the pay-off?
Nicki Haley — Haley is 38 and I think smart enough to stay out of it for the time being. I think she wants to take SC back to the stone age before getting on to the national stage
By my count, six of those are batsh!t crazy and the others iffy at best--
Japan quake loaded stress on fault closer to Tokyo
It’s a common occurrence after strong quakes and happened after the 2004 mega-earthquake and tsunami off Indonesia that killed 230,000 people in a dozen nations.
Three months later, an 8.6-magnitude quake erupted farther down the fault line, killing 1,000 people on sparsely populated Nias island.
“But it’s difficult to say,” said Atwater. “There are good examples of such stresses leading to other earthquakes, big earthquakes, and there are good examples of that not happening.”

The quote for our times, or at least for today -
“We are drinking from a fire hose here. The input data keeps changing and augmenting,” Ross Stein, of the USGS, wrote in an e-mail.
A wrecked ship is threatening to cause an environmental disaster on an island which is home to endangered penguins, conservationists warn.
The vessel has grounded on Nightingale Island, part of the Tristan da Cunha UK overseas territory in the South Atlantic, causing an oil slick around the island which is home to nearly half the world’s population of northern rockhopper penguins.
Some 1,500 tonnes of heavy crude oil from the MS Olivia, which was shipping soya beans between Rio de Janeiro and Singapore, is leaking into the sea.
Trevor Glass, Tristan conservation officer, said: “The scene at Nightingale is dreadful as there is an oil slick encircling the island.
“The Tristan conservation team are doing all they can to clean up the penguins that are currently coming ashore. It is a disaster.”

I don’t see anyone on the list of potential ‘can’t VPs who would rock my world -- if I were a ‘can’t, that is. The pros/cons analysis in interesting, although I’m not sure how Bellantoni could determine whether 2 of the candidates (Noem & Thune) would bring geographical diversity to the ticket since they don’t know who the nominee will be. It goes almost without saying that from that list of ‘can’ts the only diversity that could be brought to the ticket is gender or geography -- lot of pasty males in that list.
Radioactive plumes emitted from Japan’s troubled Fukushima nuclear power plant are headed to the southwest towards Tokyo today, carried by onshore northeasterly winds. An elongated area of low pressure is located off the southeast coast of Japan, and the counter-clockwise flow of air around this low may bring several periods of onshore northeasterly winds through Tuesday to northern Japan.

A 9:02 min. clip of the tsunami coming in , it’s in Japanese, so I have no idea what harbor this is . But this has the sound, this is truly scary stuff _

Katherine,
Niki Haley is a nudnik. I suspect the financials she prepared as part of her campaign filings are going to be the end of her. The appointments she has made are an affront to all who genuinely wish to serve, and an embarrassment to the State.
Craig,
I don’t understand the angst about popping K*daffy. After all, he’s just another colonel, not the de jure head of state.
i can see it now:

sea, ’tis a most auspicious day for celebrating the birth of a lovely lass. have a happy one, kathleen. surely tonight they’ll be singing this to you in the pub
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjO8RpU4xCo
OSH… if it is your birthday….. have the best one yet!
and enjoy your witch’s brew.
well if gender and geographical area are in play…. I’d say NH’s junior female Senator Kelly Ayotte looks good….
but hell I wouldn’t and didn’t vote for her.
Birthdays or not, everyone, especially Sea, have one hell of a day!
Niki Haley is a nudnik.
Flatus
You have such an understated way!
I saw her in an interview with that horrible woman from Az and it was a toss up as to which one uttered more nonsense
Thank you for the birthday wishes, it was a grand day!
Kathleen,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Love You!! Ha ha, your beautiful, lovely candies too……. :0)
“being supreme leader must be pretty hip or there woudn’t be so many practising the art, but there is a lot to be said for luxurious hideaways and buxom nurses.”

Sweetie won’t let me be a Supreme Leader. That is the only reason why I am an ordinary middle class victim. The Libyan revolution seems to be coagulating into a mere civil war. Where are all the Chadian Toyotas when the cause of freedom needs them ?
The ‘allies’ and Libyan revolutionaries would have an easier time if they would only bump off that other totally corrupt and randy slimeball, berlusconi.
While I have the floor :
Who is putin, who wages a murderous crusades in both Chechnya and Georgia, to accuse anyone else. There’s another blood -drenched villain the world and russia could happily do without.
Happy Birthday, OSH.
For sheer weirdness, bachmann is the curdled cream of the crap. ron paul and jim demint come in tied for second.
scott brown is merely flaky. He’s the only one on the list who is even marginally sane, so he obviously doesn’t stand a chance. Besides, the tea prats now hate him. They somehow sense (hard as that is to believe) that they were merely useful idiots, used by his campaign.
thune is probably the second most functional. But, he’s from the oil-less part of dakota territory, a destitute emptiness with hardly any white people, and he therefore brings nothing of value to the ticket.
I expect a ticket made up of 2 unemployed former somebodies, like the huckster and either Potholes Aplenty or mega head whitman (she hasn’t run out of $$$ yet).
The republicans haven’t picked an actual dead white guy yet. If they decide to run General macarthur or jesse helms, you can bet that the tpers and birthers will argue that there is nothing in the Constitution barring dead folks from running. Running a fellow dead white guy could really boost the dead white guy vote in Ohio and the Florida panhandle, where the the integrity of the polls is iffy at the best of times.
ron paul hasn’t looked like a live guy for years. But, he has a job, and is therefore not a good republican candidate. Witness john muckain, who because he had a job to go in Washington, stiffed Letterman and thereby lost the election to a mere ….
“An American-led military campaign to destroy Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s air defenses and establish a no-fly zone over Libya has nearly accomplished its initial objectives, and the United States is moving swiftly to hand command to allies in Europe, American officials said Monday.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/23/world/africa/23libya.html
is it time to recycle that “mission accomplished” sign?
“ron paul hasn’t looked like a live guy for years”
xr, but who says a stalking horse has to be alive? note the last line in this quote from wiki:
“A stalking horse is a person who tests a concept with someone or mounts a challenge against them on behalf of an anonymous third party……
…..The term stalking horse originally derived from the practice of hunting,[1] particularly of wildfowl.[2] Hunters noticed that many birds would flee immediately on the approach of humans, but would tolerate the close presence of animals such as horses and cattle.
Hunters would therefore slowly approach their quarry by walking alongside their horses, keeping their upper bodies out of sight until the flock was within firing range. Animals trained for this purpose were called stalking horses. Sometimes mobile hides are used for a similar purpose.”

“Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom and his wife Sandra Torres have filed for divorce so she can stand for election to succeed him, officials say.”
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12813999
that’s what she said.
probably been planning this for years and probably also talked him into an overly generous settlement…. like everything. “but, querido, how can i run a successful campaign without money, without property, without the clothes off your back?…. and don’t forget the photogenic dog and kids”
sra: “what was that swiss bank acct # again and where’d you put the deed to the villa riviera?”
“The world’s leading Internet giant and a leading foreign policy think tank are convening a major conference this summer in Ireland that will bring together former violent extremists to discuss how to prevent homegrown terrorism.
Google Ideas, the new “think/do tank” led by former State Department official Jared Cohen, is organizing a 3-day event in Dublin in late June in conjunction with the Council on Foreign Relations, where Cohen is also a fellow. The event will bring together about 50 former extremists who used to be members of inner city street gangs, white power groups, Muslim fundamentalist groups, and other violent youth organizations. Over 200 experts from academia, civil society groups, tech companies, victims’ groups, and private corporations will also join.
Homeland Security chairman Peter King’s (R-NY) controversial congressional hearings last week were criticized for their focus on Muslim extremism. The CFR/Google conference seeks to reframe the debate over homegrown extremism as a problem that cuts across political, geographic, and religious lines.”
http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/
“think/do tank”? there must be a song somewhere there in that phrase…..or at least a joke.
Ladies and germs, buoys and gulls, an announcement is in order (other than the reiterationof birthday wishes to Sea).
NEW THREAD
“First they came for your pension, then your jobs, now the FL Gov wants your PISS
First, the Koch-funded Rick Scott came for your pension. Then he took your jobs. Anyone who is left in public service will now submit to frequent, random drug testing. Make no mistake people, this about DEHUMANIZING anyone who might still have the energy and will to stand up to this carpet-bagging dictator.
Our state is supposedly broke, but Rick Scott has miraculously found the money to search into your bloodstream at any given time. It’s not like drug use is a problem — this is about Rick Scott making sure that teachers and anyone with a stake in community-based employment has the frequent experience of having to open up their body for a full search and seizure. The message is RICK SCOTT OWNS YOUR ASS, b/c if he were at all concerned about drug use, he’d wouldn’t be using political capital to protect oxycontin pill mills and drug dealers from public scrutiny. Rick Scott doesn’t give a shit about drugs — he wants us to know that your “resistance” will be met with ruin. “You want to protest us stealing your pension? Well guess what — we’re going to drug test you, and who knows…we might just find something.”
And, how much do you want to bet that his very own Solantic clinics will be the ones getting the contract work?
Disgusting.
And — lets be 100% clear on why Scott is governor. Blame Citizens United. This reptile isn’t in office b/c of a weak Democratic Party in Florida. He won b/c there’s no way not to win when you have unlimited cash from the Koch Brothers.”
