The Jeb Bush Tease?
Sure, once again he said no but going on a national tour isn’t going to stifle White House talk.
At a time when the Republican establishment is getting desperate for a candidate (now that Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels declined), Jeb is traveling around the country touting education “reforms” that delight social conservatives: vouchers and charter schools.
That’s what makes Jeb such a favorite among party leaders and top fundraisers. He’s one of them but also knows how to rally the right. And he has certainly done many of the conventional things that aspiring candidates do to keep in circulation, such as starting a policy foundation for collecting donors and getting the message out.
Bush also is not shy about bashing Obama, which raises GOP hopes for a run, recently enticing an audience in Dallas by predicting that the President “can be beat for sure.”
There was something almost teasing about Bush releasing a statement over the weekend denying any presidential ambitions for next year. While aimed at discouraging another round of speculation, the move actually widened news coverage and probably helped keep his name alive in the minds of Republicans who are so eager to defeat Obama.
At this point about the only way for Jeb to really be convincing is to get it over with for real and endorse someone else, perhaps while on one of his national tours to promote himself. If he won’t be president, he could be king maker.

GOOP, GOOP,
IMO, Jeb carries too much personal/family baggage to win in the general election--but, you’re right, he may be the king maker supplanting Jim Baker in that role.
I think it’s gonna take more than 4 years to get the stench of W out of folks’ minds.
Touring the WH grounds a couple of years ago, I saw the childrens’ garden with hand & footprints of the young family members of past presidents. Man, there were a lot of Bush imprints! I wondered how many would end up controlling this country from various positions of power?
Well, is Jeb gonna be a “king” maker or propper-upper of Gingrich, the peoples’ princess?

All federal bailouts? All? Lehman Bros didn’t get a bailout, right? So, maybe Jeb was just ticked off & decided nobody else should have one if his buddies couldn’t get a deal?

Jeb Bush. I can’t wait for the Matt Taibi story
Following some link on HuffPO, I read that several months ago Roger Ailes had both Rush Limbaugh and Chris Cristie visiting his place over a weekend. Forget about the political talk, how’d you like to see that catering bill?
I wondered if he ordered in, or every few hours just trucked them over to the nearest All-You-Can-Eat Buffet.

Trouble is, things don’t always work out well for kingmakers. Can’t help thinking of the guy, in particular, who actually bore that nickname--just sayin’--
I don’t know if Jeb intends to run or not, but if he hasn’t figured out that the Bush name is toxic, then he is not as smart as everyone says he is.
I rather imagine team Obama would delight in running against a Bush who is actually on the ticket. They did a pretty good job last time around of running against a Bush that wasn’t.
George W is all the reason any one needs to never let another Bush within spitting distance of the White House.
The party of personal responsibility sure does like bankruptcy for corporations and states, but for individuals in financial crises, well, not so much.
I can only assume that there must be a lot of money to be stolen from those pension funds otherwise they wouldn’t give it a second look.

Update: the painfully slow process of transitioning to our new home at craigcrawford.com is still on target for our june 5 anniversary. But I must warn you that our new spam protection regime will require a working email. Otherwise we would have to go with that annoying captcha code thingie. So for those who find that invasive I suggest creating an email addy with gmail or yahoo or anything else strictly for this purpose. And I promise never EVER to share your email with anyone else. It is just that this appears to be the most efficient way for me to manage registration with maximum spam protection and unfettered commenting.

2. Not to be confused with futtering. It wouldn’t be the Internet without futtering, either. Demonstrations of futtering paid for and grew the Internet.
3. Back to the jebusite, is he the bush who fathered the rapist ? Or, did he merely raise stoners ?
4. Without jeb, Al Gore would have been president. The airline cockpits would have been hardened, so 9/11 wouldn’t have happened. Gore would not have invented the yellowcake bs, or invaded Iraq. America would have saved $$$4 TR!LL!ON, were it not for jebus.

If it weren’t for the many, the few would die in the maternity wards. It is amazing how many millions of mediocre people think that they are the oppressed geniuses.
I am not accusing Jax of mediocrity. Clearly, he is the genuine article. Nathaniel Brandon, however, is mediocre.
xrep,
The statistically mediocre professors (by this valuation) likely make up the largest percentage 60%.
They are probably fine. Theoretically, It’s the marginal that are most at risk……..

xrep — I think you are spot on — if Gore had been presidentI don’t think 9/11 would have happened. Clinton took those warnings seriously….and I think Gore would have too.
Patsi, you may be correct about 9/11--it may well have been 12/25 instead. Personally, I saw no special competence in security issues no matter which party was involved.

There was a weekly meeting under Clinton about any security alerts, Flatus — I believe Gore would have continued that. Bush did not have them. Now — if that specific alert had been missed in the first place, maybe it would have gone on…but Bush was warned and did nothing.
Craig….what’s up with the Orlando PBS station changing to religious programming? Any inside scoop?
Dear Jeb,
I see that once again you are flirting with the possibility of a presidential run.
While I can understand your desire to do so, I hope and pray that you will not think too badly of me for pointing out some of the obstacles that you will encounter, should you decide to run.
Most people realize of course that your birth right was usurped by your brother George, along with Jim Baker and Dick Cheney.
The bitterness that you must feel over that turn of events must still linger. You were smarter and better looking, but that darn George was the governor of Texas and you were only the Governor of Florida. In politics as in life itself, size matters, so does timing.
In my heart of hearts I know that you would make a marginally better president than your brother, if only because you tend to speak in complete sentences. That said, given the abysmal condition in which the country found itself in after eight years of brother George,’marginally better ‘, is not exactly a ringing endorsement of your abilities as either a politician or a commander in chief.
In short Jeb, ain’t nobody going to vote for anybody named Bush any time soon. Your life will be much simpler and much less stressful as soon as you face that reality.
I know that family dinners would have been somewhat awkward had you not managed to put George over the top in 2000, I imagine that they are a little stiff at best, what with George on the wagon, but you must understand that a lot of people still resent the Florida debacle and your part in it.
I feel certain that once you come to grips with the many difficulties associated with a presidential bid that the full weight of your intellect will cause you to reconsider such folly.
You are a young and talented man sir, and I have no doubt that you may still contribute to the well being of the country in many ways, just not as President of The United States.
Perhaps working for the public good would be an option.
I know that former president Carter could use some high profile country first politicians to assist him in his pursuit of free and fair elections world wide. A voice of your stature would be most welcome.George does not seem to be making use of his post presidency, this might present a good opportunity to step up and burnish the Bush image.
As always I look forward to hearing from you on these and other matters. Your candor is always most refreshing.
Sincerely,
A. Voter.
Jax,
Agreed on your 6:46 post. It is not generally known that the groundbreaking profs are also protected by tenure, for they rock the boat and are annoying to administrations and colleagues.
Cases in point, and directly contrary to Ayn Randianism : Unpopular academic geniuses Wittgenstein, Teller, Allegro, Campbell (Joseph), Oppenheimer, Lister, and Koch retained their positions thanks to tenure, and we, both the great and the small are the better for their work.
Meanwhile in the Soviet Union, that place alleged to hold the opposite to Randian values, approval by stalin & brezhnev meant everything, and ass-licking took the place of tenure, the geniuses Babel, Pasternak, Solzhenitzyn, Gorkiy, and Spassky lost their jobs, while Lysenko kept his.
The 1933 nazi law, ‘Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums’ (The Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service) re-instated the Civil Service, while ending tenure. This allowed German municipalities to boot out Jewish and Gypsy employees.
So, it seems that the totalitarian ‘socialist’ dictatorships Ayn Rand hated so much opposed tenure as she did, while the Liberal West maintained tenure and thereby protected genius. Just another example of the unscientific and mediocre thnking of Ayn Rand.
We The Living is a good book, though.
Slight error above. Spassky did not lose his job. He was merely denounced in Pravda and Izvestia for losing chess games to bobby fischer, and made to earn his way back up in the chess heirarchy of the “Worker’s Paradise”.
I claim mediocrity as my excuse.

“What NY-26 Means
With polls showing Democrats Kathy Hochul surging and likely to win today, the spin about what the race means is going to supercede the election itself. Republicans say the race tells you nothing about the Republican budget, which became its central issue, or the state of public opinion. (Heres some spin from Eric Cantor and American Crossroads.) Mainstream analysts are taking a very cautious approach to interpreting the race. (Heres a cautious Nate Silver, and an even more cautious Charlie Cook.)
Im not so cautious. I think the race is quite significant. Yes, the race is almost certainly an outlier, in the sense that if Democrats everywhere could overperform the partisan division of their district as much as Kathy Hochul seems likely to, then theyll easily sweep control of the House next year. That seems unlikely. Even as an outlier, though, this race fits together with other data to tell us that the political landscape has fundamentally shifted in the six months since the last elections. Take a look at this chart, compiled by Silver, plotting the 2010 House vote against that districts 2008 presidential vote:”

“Could Democrats Actually Win NY-26?
You can count on Kathy to say no to partisan politics that would end Medicare as we know it to pay for more tax cuts for multimillionaires, [former Pres. Bill] Clinton said on the call, which was paid for by the Democratic National Committee. All eyes on New Yorks special
That were even talking about the possibility proves how dangerously toxic Rep. Paul Ryans budget scheme is. The election is today. Texan4Hillary will be liveblogging the results tonight starting at around 9:30 pm EST.
Both New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Marco Rubio made robo-calls for Corwin trying to make up for a lead Hochul has built, which on Sunday showed it beyond the margin of error, according to PPP, with Corwins favorability cratering.”

‘Meghan McCain On Glenn Becks Ridiculous Vomiting: No Man Will Ever Make Me A Victim
VIDEO
Meghan McCain stopped by and chatted with Jay Leno last night to talk about her dating life and appearing naked in a PSA for skin cancer. Leno brought up Glenn Becks much criticized response to the commercial and McCain took on Beck, with much approval from the studio audience.
Leno agreed that McCain had a right to be upset, since Becks vomiting at McCain appearing naked was just cruel and not even an attempt at being funny. McCain responded, no man will ever make me a victim, least of all Glenn Beck and I just thought it was ridiculous. She said she was sick of such a toxic message being sent to young women and that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Then, presumably joking, McCain promised my father was tortured in prison, he can definitely kick [Beck's] ass.
In other news, her dating life isnt going so well, but not because of Beck, its because of Sarah Palin. Whenever she goes on dates, apparently the guy always asks her for gossip on Palin, which she admits doesnt put me in the mood, talking about Sarah Palin. Therefore, since shes sick of talking about Palin, shes on a hiatus from dating. So sorry Beck, looks like you wont be able to make it up to Meghan by taking her out on a date.

“The jobs were saved, the economy was helped, and the government gets repaid ahead of schedule. GM too is earning healthy profits again, allowing the government to divest itself of its GM stock. So: everybody wins.
It doesn’t seem to have been polled in a while, but back in 2009 the auto bailout was extremely unpopular. But it’s hard to imagine that Republicans are going to want to talk much about how they preferred to see Chrysler and GM liquidated. Nevertheless, if you forced them to, I’m sure they could come up with reasons why the turnaround in the industry proves nothing, and the bailout was still a bad idea.”

When reporting on the tornadoes ripping apart the (ironically) red state “heartland” THOU SHALL NOT utter the words “global warming” or, in any way, imply that “climate change” MIGHT JUST be responsible.
If you do, our hired thugs in Congress will hunt you down, kill your dog, and sell crack to your kids.
Have a nice day.
Tornadoes are a myth.
I’ve never seen one, except in “The Wizard of OZ.” (That one was done with a spinning cylinder of cotton fabric, dyed black.)
All those grainy home videos of tornadoes on youtube could be faked.
OK, we’ve all seen “aftermath” video of houses smashed into pieces, but that could just be the results of a wild party. I’ve been to a couple of those.
So…tornadoes are just a “theory.”
More research needs to be done.
*****
I’m a “tornado denier.”
Actually we did have a tornado in northern Maine about ten years ago.
It cut across US route 1 between Presque Isle and Caribou, and knocked down about 20 white pine trees, some of whcih were 100 feet tall.
We did not ask for federal disaster assistance.
Watching NY 26 … There may be some climate change and Medicare favorable converts in the making.
I find it ironic that the “red” states in the middle of the USA are increasingly victimized by tornadoes, droughts, and floods due to global warming, while the “blue” states on the east & west coasts are unaffected.
If I was religious, I would say that God has a sense of humor.
However, as I am a secular humanist, I merely say that stupidity has consequences.
New york 26 may be pretty close. Wonder which republican county clerk will have to hold out the necessary ballots in order to put the repub. over the top?
If New York 26 goes blue it will probably be due to voter fraud.
Just ask republicans.

We’ll shall see…
When do they start to report the results? 10PM?

Paul Ryan is dead meat. HIs GOP colleagues will eat his liver.

Dem. wins NY 26
Ed Shultz just reported: the Dem won in NY 26!
Well…this will give probably Craig his blog topic for tomorrow.
I’m gonna put on Fox news so I can see how they try to spin this. “Upstate New York? They’re just a bunch of socialistic cheese eaters. Nothing to see here. Move on.”
“His GOP colleagues will eat his liver.”
They better Pasteurize everything first.
Rove and company sure flushed a lot of money down the drain.
Somehow I just can’t feel too sorry for them.
I don’t think Fox will have a lot on this. My guess is the tornadoes in Missouri just became a really big story.
They are probably Obama’s fault anyway.
Fox news is reporting that Paul Ryan has been sewn into a cotton sack with a cannon ball, and, after appropriate religious ceremonies, has been buried at sea by Navy Seals.
*****
OK, I made that up.
(I don’t want another lecture from Craig.)
My mistake, it is Rick Perry and immigration. Big, big, story.
The Dem. won. The more far reaching question is whether they learned any thing from the experience?
Recent history, not encouraging in that regard.

OK, I’m kidding. Again.
Actually, Fox News is talking about NJ GOP governor Chris Christie running for President. (Really. I’m not making that up.)
I could see that…IF… he loses about 80 pounds.
I knew President Taft.
Presdient Taft was a friend of mine.
You sir, are no President Taft.
The NJ population will draft Christie just to get him out of the state.

He’s probably a foreigner.
I don’t think that there was a special election in NY 26.
Fox is not covering it.
What gives?
NY 26 is the district of nazi sympathizer hamilton fish III.
Dems have won the seat for 16 of the last 154 years.
Of course, faux newsCrap won’t see any significance in that.
