Sorry, but I cannot focus on the news of the day. Such a difficult time. I am so grateful that you, the Trail Mix commentators, can carry on the blog when I can’t. You cannot know how much I value what you do.

For Patsi,

Last night we lost a Trail Mix Boss — Patsi Bale Cox, known here for her feisty passion and unflinching advocacy for the rights and dignity of women. Our archives show that she contributed more than 7,000 coments across the last few years. Click here for an interview about Patsi’s colorful career as a music journalist. — Craig

So I moved to AZ. Wink

  3. jace says:

    Craig,

Take a little time for yourself and take care.

  4. Hi all, our ole pal Sean (Lard) is not doing so well. Headin back down there. He’s heard your prayers and well wishes. Not much more we can do, other than carry forward with that voodoo that you do so well. Again, thank you so much for keeping the flame alive while I deal with this increbile heartbreak.

  5. Patd, hang in there

  6. Blonde Wino says:

We are with you as you head back to Orlando, Craig. I know Sean’s physical body is not doing well, but his spirit thrives. It is the greatest honor on earth to say good-bye to family and loved ones and to be with them at the hardest of times.

To the ‘glue’ that holds all of this together, I wish you safe travels.

  7. Blonde Wino says:

    keep going…

  8. Tonyb says:

    Oh Craig,
Have i been there! I wish Sean the best and you as well..

  9. Craig…

I’ll keep Sean in my prayers.

  10. harborwoman says:

My thoughts and prayers are with both Sean and you, Craig. Blonde Wino said it beautifully…it truly is an honor to be with someone, and to love them as you so obviously love Sean, in times such as these.

  11. sturgeone says:

good to have real friends at a time like this…..

  13. patd says:

sean is a hero helping all of us just to get thru the territory.
his humor lightens the load, lights the path and enlightens us about the journey.

  14. RebelliousRenee says:

Craig… was in your shoes late in spring when a good friend passed over from the same thing as Sean. It’s a hard thing to watch happen and I feel very much for you.

Sean is teaching you and everyone around him how to live life to it’s fullest. I know how hard it is to believe that lesson when your heart is breaking.

Sending you and Sean light and love.

  15. jace says:

    Sunday Sublime.

I had a hard time deciding about today’s post.
This is not exactly sublime but I feel as though the ‘trail’ could use a smile or two just now. Enjoy!

  16. patd says:

fearless leader, thanks for the words of encouragement.
am reminded of a line from my favorite ‘toon bullwinkle, tv at it’s best:

Rocky: Hey Bullwinkle, we’re in real trouble now!
Bullwinkle: Oh good, Rocky! I hate that artificial kind!

  17. Well the tough times just got tougher. We’ve lost Patsi. She was such a feisty and passionate part of our world. Got this today from Sheila:

“Patsi passed away last night from a particularly frightful case of emphysema. God Bless her. She was really uncomfortable at the end and trying to finish a book.

Its funny to say that I LOVE her after having such a tuff time in 2007/08 during the election season. But we managed to make our way to friendship again and then in this last year we became pen pals until about a week ago when she just let me know that she just couldn’t take it anymore and was going to the hospital. Our larger than life Country Girl is gone, but we are all the more richer for knowing her. We ALL had some GREAT laughs and not a few great arguments from a great woman.

One thing we talked about was her illness. She said, that she knew she had emphysema about 5 years ago and did nothing about it. She had wished she would have, because the end would not have been so soon. AND from what she described to me, nightmarish and painful. A lesson to us all. Don’t deny yourself treatment.

Love to all and pass it on.
    Sheila”

  18. Jamie says:

The loss of Patsi is a particularly sad one for the trail. She was feisty, stubborn, magnificent, and now has left us too soon. My condolences to all who held her dear and cherished her loving presence.

  19. Reviewing our archives back to June 2007, Patsi posted 7,367 comments. For a fitting remembrance here is one of her last comments:

    patsi says:

I have recently been in the dumps over what I see as too, too many young women who appear to be shrugging off feminism as “something the old ladies of the 70s did” and little more.

But my granddaughter has given me encouragement. Maria is five, and recently started kindergarten. Her understanding of many, many things is involved here. This is the story her mother, my daughter, tells:

When Tracy and Jake went to “parents’ night” at the school, the teacher had put up a poster with each child’s name and the answer to a question about why they liked reading. Most of the answers involved the cuddle time with mom, the stories, and how going to library days were fun — that sort of thing.

Maria’s answer to “Why do you like reading?” was this:

    “Because nobody can stop me.”

    That says a lot.

From Patsi’s daughter on Facebook just to let you all know she left exactly as we knew her best:

    “Tracy Cox Nath
I think you will all appreciate this story -- when my mom was slipping into a non-responsive state my aunt asked her a bunch of questions. One was, “Who is the President?” Mom’s answer -- “Should’ve been Hillary!”

patsi, i remember you telling us about that spark we all are… well, this sorry planet is just too small to handle your special radiance. sparkle on, girl!

  23. corey says:

I just read about Patsi’s passing on Facebook. Didn’t know what the cause was until I came here. Very sad news. Very sad to hear about Sean (Lard) as well. They wll both be in my prayers.

  24. Well I just heard about Patsi over at the old backchannel blog and I too will miss her.

Though we had our differences she was a ok as far as I’m concerned. I will say a prayer for her today.

Every one have a great day.

  25. On another note…

That earthquake in Oklahoma could have been caused by Fracking for Natural Gas. It has been suspected as causing some earthquakes in other areas from all the pressure and water being forced through the ground while searching for pockets of natural gas.

If so we should expect more in the future.

    Have a great day.

  26. MadMustard says:

It is amazing the strong attachments one can have for people you never physically meet. Mr. Horsedooty informed me this morning of the sad news about the passing of Patsi Bale Cox. My dear friend Chef Sheila informed Mr. Horsedooty, so we still have a Trail Mix network out there.

I did some Photoshop work for Patsi about a year ago and she was always gracious in our interactions, even off of the Trail. I will miss her.

I offer my condolences to all of the Trail Mix clan, both old and new.

“Patsi was a pretty cool old lady and fiercely defended what she believed in.“

What happened to the comment I left about Patsi at 9:45am\9:46am? Did you delete it?

    Just wondering.

    Have a great day.

  29. Julia says:

Rest in peace, Patsi. I’ll miss you, your sense of humor, your wit, and your wisdom.

Man, so sad! What a loss for all who knew and loved Patsi! We last mailed maybe a little over a week ago and she told me sorry for taking awhile to get back to me but that she was real sick. Patsi also said its funny but it seems like were old old pals, love you.. Cry

  32. Tonyb says:

    Sheila,
Thanks for letting Craig and all of us here know about Patsi’s passing..

  33. Idiocracy-Herman Cain
The scene in Idiocracy, the Mike Judge movie, where the US president is at the podium and being booed, but then he reaches back and pulls out a huge machine gun and fires a rapid blast into the ceiling and then says to the stunned silent audience “Right, that’s what I thought”.

That is a metaphor for Herman Cain. He’s the Get er Done candidate. I know the man from listening… to him as a radio talk show host well before the present ‘dillema’ of his frighteningly viable candidacy for president and I can tell you, Herman Cain speaks AM and he is the first candidate of the Idiocracy party.

This party must be taken seriously, but we on the Left have a huge divide to cross to reach them. Just like in Idiocracy they have been convinced by corporate backed spokespeople that whatever makes the corporations the most profits is good and should be supported. In today’s world the corporate microphone is AM RADIO-COX-WABC and the billionaire Koch brothers who Cain refers to as his ‘brothers from another mother’.

The spokespeople are, Hannity, Limbaugh, Boortz, Levin, Savage, Ingram, Beck etc. Twenty hours a day, five days a week, corporate fantasy reality; Idiocracy. Herman Cain was trained in their ranks as an AM talk radio host in Atlanta where he had his own show and often filled in for Neal Boortz until as recently as a year ago.

This is the easy answer party and easy answers appeal to a nation who still feel lost and on the ropes financially, too tired from working harder than ever to make ends meet to take the time to analyze the history and complexities of our weak economy. And tragically, many of these people are too exhausted and frustrated to take the time to even notice that the bill of goods in the Idiocracy party platform is just the same old conservative economics we’ve suffered through for thirty years. Even Democrat president Clinton was, in the words of Alan Greenspan ‘a great Republican president, economically’ because he signed Republican sponsored legislation to gut welfare and unbridled free trade which perhaps no other Democrat president in history would have signed.

This is a frightening moment for America. We are on the cusp of nominating a complete charlatan to run for the presidency in one of our major parties. It’s easy to say ‘it doesn’t matter, he can’t win the general election’ and hopefully that’s true, but this could get scarier before it’s over. In a nation which is already all too much like Idiocracy, where people seem to no longer have any historical compass to guide them, what might happen?

The Idiocracy party has already succeeded in re-starting the conversation about taxation, from scratch, on their AM machine. ‘Why have any taxes at all?’ that’s a good place to start, they say. And ‘Why should any person, no matter how poor, not pay the exact same tax as a billionaire?’ sounds good huh? What if some high profile rich young athletes like the ring of their taxation being cut to 1/4 what it presently is and they step forward as Heroes for Herman in an ad campaign? It’s queasy to contemplate.

We must reach out with with basic facts about our nations fiscal history. That is our best argument. These folks, who are good people at heart, have been presented with a fake version of US history, especially concerning financial matters. The truth is that one can easily trace America’s economic glory days, from 1940-80, to far higher taxes on the most wealthy with that federal revenue being spent to modernize our nations transportation and technological infrastructure, public education etc. And the reverse taxation policies we’ve endured since 1980 have shown us opposite results. But AM Idiocracy says ‘No, we are just failing because we didn’t lower the taxes on the rich enough’.

We on the Left have our work cut out for us…

I present a basic version of our recent fiscal history in my masthead under the title…at the top of the page here. Let me repeat it and please write your own version and plague the media with it! It’s our only hope.

-From 1940-80 the wealthiest Americans paid between 70% and 90% in income taxes and that’s how we built…the American Dream. Between 1940-80 we fought and paid for WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, we built our US Interstate Expressway system, Roads, Electrical Grid, Telephone, our main Bridges and Tunnels; we Made every Car we Drove and we wore just the Clothes we Sewed and WE WENT TO THE MOON SIX TIMES-AND WE PAID FOR IT ALL!-

I am so sorry to hear about Patsi. We’ve lost not only an insightful commentator, but a friend with a wicked and wonderful sense of humor. She was, no, I will say IS a friend for the ages.

  35. Jamie says:

    Dixie Dove

Just finished watching Gary Bauer on State of the Union. He is still as smarmy, prissy, smug, and weaselly as I judged when we first met 30 years ago. You are absolutely right about the idiocracy that now are backing Cain and his ilk.

I think the biggest problem that both centrists and the left have is that we find it almost impossible to believe that there are actually people who believe what the right believes so we keep giving them the benefit of a doubt as if somehow they will come to their senses. Well flash announcement, they won’t and it is time to treat them as the road block they are and campaign against every single word that comes from that source.

  36. xrepublican says:

Calling Patsi feisty is under-rating the woman. Patsi was In-Your-Face combative. I can say, In-My-Face, too. The world could use a lot more fearless & principled people like Patsi. Let’s start following her example.

  37. xrepublican says:

Smarmy, smug, prissy, weasel : Perfect ID, Jamie.

  38. Oregon Democrat says:

I’m very sorry to hear about Patsi. Her contributions here are immeasureable.

  39. harborwoman says:

My heart is breaking, too…for all the reasons you have given here. It’s almost impossible to imagine anything silencing our Patsi. I’m grateful that we have some of her words, her wit, her humor, and her feisty spunk to remind us all what it is to believe passionately.

I can’t seem to stop crying…for Patsi, for Lard, for Craig, and for all of us….

  40. chefsheila says:

Sigh. it really says something about a person when there are hearts breaking all over the world today. Many people are paying tribute on Patsi’s Facebook Page. She would have loved that.

So I loved her. Had a great time with Patsi on Facebook. We learned that we really liked each other and not to talk too much Obama/Clinton Politics…lol! Had some great COUNTRY in common and some great sisterhood in common too.

AND the reason why I am here? I love you all too. Wanted you to know that. Crawfordslist is still dear too me.

    love to all
    Sheila

  41. Blonde Wino says:

I am crying like a baby today…uncontrollable tears. Patsi was kind enough to send me a personal message on FB a few weeks ago to encourage me. Patsi was a huge support to me and she is the reason I bought cancer insurance a couple of years ago. Like the loss of many in my life, she will walk my mind repeating her words of wisdom, rage and kindness.

  42. chefsheila says:

BTW, LARD ASS BABE!!! Love you too. Here is a mental {HUG} from the CHEF

  43. jace says:

As I read over some of the comments here for the last couple of weeks and especially to day, I can’t help but marvel at what a caring and compassionate community this is. Kind of what communities should be, but often are not.

If I was ever up against it, I sure would want you all in my corner.

Very special doesn’t even begin to describe you. Wink

  44. tylenol says:

    Hello All,

So sorry to hear about Patsi. She gave me my favourite expression: ‘It’s pig-slappin time.’ I shall miss her, particularly on Facebook where she frequently slapped a few pigs around. She was so proud of her family; and I hope they know how much we love and will miss her.

Craig, sorry to hear about Sean as well. I’m so heartened that you were able to be there recently for his birthday, I will read his blog often, and smile when thinking of his cheeky Facebook status updates. A lovely man. Thinking of you and David at this time.

  45. Blonde Wino says:

    Hah!

Another Patsi expression I will remember.

  46. patd says:

I can’t help but marvel at what a caring and compassionate community this is.

jace, may our circle be unbroken

  47. RebelliousRenee says:

So nice to see some of you who haven’t been here in awhile.

Sheila… I really miss you and hope everything is going well for you in life. Would love to see you stick around a bit.

  48. “She will walk my mind”

Blonde, what a beautiful line! You’re walking mine with that one.

  49. Well harbor, like my grandma once said, crying is good for your complexion. Lord knows I won’t need any face cream for a while.

  50. harborwoman says:

Now I’m laughing and crying at the same time. Thanks, Craig! Good to know these tears are good for something….

  51. Jace, the organic evolution over these past years of what you describe has been one of the most wondrous surprises of my life. As MadMustard said above, “It is amazing the strong attachments one can have for people you never physically meet.”

  52. Patd, you nailed it — and us — with this video. Thanks much!

  53. Since Patsi co-authored Loretta Lynn’s Memoir, this seems fitting:

  54. chefsheila says:

Renee…..Oh geez…I was just missing you the other day. Words just can’t express how much I miss our chats. I’ll come around more often and I’ll friend you on FB too. XOXO

  55. chefsheila says:

I was telling Jamie this morning about much wailing over this John Prine Song. Patsi suggested it for my wedding jokingly and I passed the laughter over to my intended and you know what? We used it in our ceremony. Right smack in the middle when others have these milksoppy tunes..(sorry)

  56. chefsheila says:

Wink Oh well, don’t know how to blog here anymore. But its good anyway. Patsi was brilliant!

  57. Heather says:

sorry for your loss Craig Sad

  58. it’s OK sheila, we add a “v” after the “http” to make youtube videos display (fixed it for ya, welcome back)

  59. Coreen says:

Sad to hear about Patsi…Her views were clear, direct & never waivering…especially when women’s rights were involved…

All the tributes here today are fitting indeed, she was a unique person…

  60. Bear says:

    Craig,

I don’t know what it was about seeing you appear on Countdown way back in the day, but it was enough to lead a disparate band of politically aware people to gather at your site.

While the internet allows strangers from across the world to meet, Crawfordslist is one of the rare places where true friendships could born and nurtured in the same way one could at their local watering hole or community.

There’s no other way I would have met Patsi but for this blog. We didn’t always agree, but I love and respected that her opinions and beliefs didn’t shift with the winds like our politicians are so quick to do.

I enjoyed talking to her about the books she’s written and about her upcoming projects…whether they ended up falling through or not.

I’m glad to hear she had her sense of humor in the end. I can’t help but think about her in the afterlife…relieved to be able to take a clean deep breath again…I can’t help but wonder if she’d go up to Swayze and tell him she’d have done a better job with his book…

  61. RebelliousRenee says:

    Sheila…
I’m not on facebook. I don’t have the time for both there and here. So I choose to be here. I do occasionally lurk other blogs… but I only post here.
    I miss our chats too.

Craig… I’m glad to see you posting today.

  62. sjwny says:

My condolences on the loss of your friend. How lucky she was to have had you in her life, and how blessed you are to have her in your heart.

  63. chefsheila says:

Well then Renee, I’ll come here. I do miss you!

  64. Jamie says:

As many of you know I do a musical 5 on Friday on my blog. This coming week will be dedicated to Patsi with the songs of five of the women where Patsi was the “As Told To”. In order to do that tribute, I had to get the Amazon link to all of her books for those who might want to order them.

  65. divalicias says:

Hello Dear Trailmixers — I read about Patsi from Facebook this morning also. Shock. Then tears. I saw Sheila’s post and I just could not believe it. How could this be? Patsi has the biggest heart. She once sent $100 to a young man she didn’t even know because I had posted about how he was having a hard time buying college books. I loved her mind and her profane way of speaking it. We have been talking about getting the ERA passed and I had hoped that we would get the deed done in her lifetime. I am so sorry that she’s gone without seeing this happen. I am determined to keep fighting now for her and her beloved little granddaughter — who’s acquired so much of Patsi’s fabulous spunk and spitfire.

We are having elections again here in Virginia. A lot is at stake and I am again working on several campaigns — we’re down to the wire. It was so hard to leave off my grieving this morning to go meet with candidates and do more GOTV chores. The only way I could was to dedicate this day to Patsi. There is a real SOB running here for Commonwealth Attorney who needs to be sent packing. I had to write some last minute radio scripts and I could hear Patsi’s voice in my head as I trimmed every extraneous word -- but kept it pithy. As I went around later doing canvassing targeted neighborhoods and organizing precincts, I thought about Patsi’s fighting spirit and how much I miss her already.

Goddess Bless Patsi Bale Cox. I am better for having known you.

  66. divalicias says:

Sheila — You are dear to me too. My heart was already breaking for Lard/Sean — and then the news about Patsi this morning really just busted it wide open.

Craig — Thank you for giving us this place to be a community of friends who squabble and debate, agree and disagree, but who stand together when times are tough — like now. The news about Sean is bad, and I dread the thought of losing him too. Love and light to all of us on this bleak day.

  67. Sad as these times are for the loss of our fallen and falling we must stumble on to honor their mighty souls.

  68. Katherine Graham Cracker says:

    In Patsi’s own words

“When my mom was slipping into a non-responsive state, my aunt asked her a bunch of questions,” wrote daughter Tracy Cox Nath in a Facebook posting. “One was, ‘Who is the president?’ Mom’s answer — ‘Should’ve been Hillary.’”

    in honor of Patsi

    “Check please!”

  69. chefsheila says:

You do bring a person to tears Craig…what a wonderful thing to say

  70. DexterJohnson says:

Well, I have been trudging through the day with a heavy heart and you know why…Patsi was very special to us, and I am included in the sadness today.
She once told me, or maybe us on the blog, I can’t recall, how she was at a party and Ashley Judd arrived barefoot after cutting through the woods to get to the cabin…Patsi was priceless.
She had so many stories . She felt genuine love and also could hammer you on the head with her prose.
Sean Holton, my friend, we love you as a brother and we are with you .

  71. jace says:

    Amen.

  72. sturgeone says:

patsi and I had lots in common to talk about….country music, denver, nashville…. She was always fun to talk with and she always had a story and a finely honed point of view…..I will miss her sharply. It seems that during our time together here we found ourselves on the same side of virtually every issue which might come up…..for that I am most grateful indeed. And she was right…..it should have been Hillary.

    Check, please.

  73. paulglester says:

I’m so sorry to hear things have taken a turn for the worst. I’m glad you are able to be with him during this difficult time. Sending Sean thoughts and prayers.

  74. Better yet, the quote on Jaime’s blog: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

  75. chefsheila says:

Diva….good to see you too girl. You are dear to me as well!! I’ve been gone for too long

  76. oldseahag says:

Damn it all to hell! Could someone please explain what happened to Patsi? shit, fuck, piss.

  77. corey says:

It’s been a sad day. When I found out about Patsi’s passing, I sent an e-mail to Julia to let her know and then I came here. It made me realize that I hadn’t seen much from Patsi lately on Facebook. I didn’t realize that Patsi had been sick, so it came as a shock to me this morning. It’s good to see everyone here today and to read everyone’s stories about Patsi. The last time I contacted her was when Pat Benatar came to do a book signing and concert in Grand Rapids. I looked up Pat’s book and saw the cover said “…with Patsi Bale Cox”. I wondered how I could have NOT known that. She was quite the woman.

  78. oldseahag says:

Her last post on fb was about deviled eggs. I gotta mull that one over.

  79. oldseahag says:

corey, thank you so much for that post. “should’ve been hillary” some of her last words. patsi, you are a pisser and i adore you.

  80. chefsheila says:

Thank you Corey! and good night everyone

  81. Colorado Bob says:

In Texas , women like Patsi are referred to being full of “piss and vinegar”. These women wear the term like a mink coat, and beam when described that way.

  82. MadMustard says:

Reflecting on the tributes made to Patsi here today, the lesson that is the most edifying to me is the fact that she had the capacity to overlook personal differences to embrace the common humanity of the people she encountered. It is all too easy to remember the very public squabbles but rapprochement should be her most memorable legacy.

Sheila detailed her relationship with Patsi and I know that despite very profound disputes with Brian, she reached out to him when he faced moments of great personal grief.

Patsi was truly remarkable; I strive to be as magnanimous in my personal dealings.

  83. Bear says:

After reading Oldseahag’s recent post, I’m driven to ask, how much is in the swear jar Craig and is there enough to buy a bottle of bourbon to drink in Patsi’s honor?

  84. Colorado Bob says:

I am tired of watching sea level rise on the ocean of tears.

  85. sturgeone says:

bourbon it is on a cresting tide…….

    And Chesapeake Bay.

The sole remaining waterman who captained one of the wooden oystering sailboats is calling it quits because of the major die-off of Upper Bay oysters.

Capt. Barry Sweitzer has put his skipjack Hilda M. Willing – a treasured sight on the Magothy River – up for sale.

Skipjack season started Tuesday and Sweitzer went out for the first time on Wednesday. What he found was troubling.

The skipjack’s dredges were full of dead oysters.

Over and over again, each lick of the dredge brought up nothing but deceased bivalves.

    Bear,
So very good to read you!

Been missing Patsi for awhile, just knew this was gonna happen..Damn, it never gets any easier….

Scientists with the Florida Division of Aquaculture began assessing oyster beds in Escambia Bay and East Bay on Monday afternoon and confirmed what oyster harvesters already knew: Something is killing the bay oysters.

“We have seen some areas with significant mortality and some areas with depleted resources,” said John Gunter, a shellfish biologist. “We’re just taking notes and making observations.”

Damn, nary a drop of bourbon in the house.

A bit of scotch and a freshly lighted candle will have to do.

    Here’s to Patsi.

  93. oldseahag says:

  94. No problem OldSea, just saying I was a bit startled. I’m kind of a prude that way, my issue. Cuss all you want. Today is a good day for it.

  95. jace says:

    CBob,

    Nicely put.

  96. jace says:

Swearing, it is impolite and unacceptable, and damn it all to Hell, sometimes it just feels so good. Wink

patsi and i would sometimes get yakking on the phone in the dead of winter, catching a buzz, drinking cheap wine, bills weren’t paid but we each found some nickels to rub together for the cheap wine.

Back at you good friend. Chardonnay will do just perfectly. Enjoy

  102. Hello Sheila my dear, dear friend.

Sorry that it took this sad occasion of Patsi’s passing to bring many old friends together again.

I hope that your doing well and hope that you will start commenting again over here.

Take care my good friend and God Bless. http://craigcrawford.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

This is not an advertisement but rather an observation.

Came home from the store today with a wonderful seasonal brew. Jubelale from the Deschutes Brewery in Bend Oregon. I poured it in a beautiful glass, let it make a nice head and savored. Delicious!

If pie is the ultimate comfort food. Good beer must surely be the ultimate comfort beverage. Wink

  104. oldseahag says:

thanks sweetie, looking forward to it, don’t need to buy chocolate though, just happy to hear your voice.

  105. Blonde Wino says:

OSH…I don’t care about the cussing, but I do object to the cheap wine!

I had posted late one night a week ago after getting into a box of inexpensive wine about you fashioning some chocolate rat’s behinds for Sean. I care, I give a rat’s behind! It is all I have left. A bag of rat behinds!

  106. oldseahag says:

BW- I think i could make those- a licorice whip dipped in chocolate tucked into a hefty dollop of chocolate. so sorry i didn’t see your post. haven’t been doing anything but working too much- am so sorry i haven’t been following all the threads.

  107. Tonyb says:

Your so sweet! Aah, your Chocolate is to die for so its a guilty pleasure! I look forward to talking with you.. So glad you shared about you and Patsi on the phone, cheap wine and all. Made me feel better!

  108. Blonde Wino says:

    OSH

Nothing says you care like a rat’s behind. My bff in Denver and I have been using the rat’s behind language for months in our daily mail. I love the idea of a licorice tail. In these lean times, it is a great marketing idea and delicious, too.

  109. Blonde Wino says:

OSH here is the lengthy, wine driven post from 10/26 — mention of fashioning a rat’s behind for Sean…last time I heard from Patsi was September 24th…

The wind is wild tonight. Finally, a change in the weather as it has been unusually warm in southern New Mexico. Hubby and I have been nurturing a wounded Grackle. A cat attacked the juvenile and it lost most of its wing. A cobweb of a wing with plenty of bird spirit. The Humane Society offered to have someone come by and put the bird down…but it just wants to be a bird. We have a had a great summer with the animals. We rehabbed a Thrasher for five days in August (with the help of the parents). We fashioned a basket nest and brought the nest in each night on our screened porch to keep it safe from ants and cats. On the fourth morning, the baby was not in the nest, but I spotted the puddle of feathers with beady black eyes staring at me from a chair cushion. I usually scooped the bird, but that morning he would grab my finger and flapped his wings. A fledgling. I still spot him in the yard. And finally, because I give a rat’s behind, we did a pet rat rescue. For some reason, a pet rat ended up in our yard. And hubby and I managed to catch it…thanks to the Humane Society, we found a rat rescue human. She was happy to have the rat and she became a rat whisperer in college…an easy pet to have in the dorm. Yep, I give a rat’s behind. I am worried about Sean. I want OSH to fashion some chocolate rat’s behinds to send to him. Because I care. I give a rat’s behind about the Trail Mix gang. I have a whole bag of rat’s behinds to give.

    For you Patsi,

  111. whskyjack says:

It’s been a rough week, the wife’s father went into the hospital with pnemonia last sunday on top of a bad case of COPD.The family decided to call in hospice wednesday and now we are waiting.
the news about Patsi was like a kick in the gut. So the wife and I went out this evening for a steak dinner and a pitcher of beer. We did a two person wake for a couple of hours, for both Patsi and for her father who is gone but not yet. It helped

    Jack

  112. oldseahag says:

BW- thanks for finding that. let me see what I can do.
Jack- you better duck and run- she’s gonna get you for that one!

  113. Blonde Wino says:

Sending you energy, Jack. Surreal times. And Sean still needs us.

  114. oldseahag says:

BW- wine driving is the best. Can’t stop wondering about why Patsi would be posting about deviled eggs when she was busy dying.

  115. oldseahag says:

Jack- so sorry, will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

  116. Blonde Wino says:

OSH…it was her way of saying good-bye.

  117. Blonde Wino says:

Before humans pass away, they do say good-bye in bizarre ways. I missed my Mom saying good-bye to me a day before she passed. But, I recognized it in afterthought. What a gift!

  118. Blonde Wino says:

Be gone from the Trail Mix, Grim Reaper!

  119. No Blonde, the grim one simply reminds us that life is precious. I don’t begrudge his toll charge. I thank him for the ride.

  120. Blonde Wino says:

Then he needs to buy a blog ad!

  121. May I share a Lardism just heard? “There’s nothing like a guy changing your depends while talking about sports. Now that’s a new experience!”

  122. Blonde Wino says:

    Love the Lardism.

  123. jace says:

    Craig,
Tell Lard that it is about sports.
No runs, no drips no, errors.

    You two hang tough.

  124. chefsheila says:

CAn’t sleep. SO OSH… let me theorise here about our girl. Patsi’s will to stay alive was there until she just finally had to face it. Or should I say, death was taking her. At some point it’s just there and Pats just had to go. As far as I’m concerned, you very last post was “It should have been Hillary”.

She and I spoke of death because I’m a blunt old friend. I just see life as this course. I guess it gave her comfort because a lot of people dont want to.

Emphysema is just plain terminal and there is no turning back. I smoked for a long time too. I know it’s a good chance I get it later on and so we talked of it.

We made really bad taste jokes about it and laughed so hard!!!! Really poor taste lol. But good for a rebellious soul!

  125. chefsheila says:

For all the rest of you Crawfordsliters. We buried the hatchet. There was slot of ridiculous misunderstandings because, she and I later realized that we are a lot alike. Bumping heads a little too hard. If I can finish my life half as well, I will feel well served. Bottom line and a good lesson is don’t hesitate to forgive a friend for perceived wrongs that are in reality just your ego talking

    Ok…time to take a pill..maybe

  126. DexterJohnson says:

Patsi and I shared a love for Bluegrass music, and Patsi knew all about Alice Garrard and Hazel Dickens. Now I will say this, I do not know what Patsi’s stand on unions was, but this song , for me, embodies Patsi’s strong stance on women’s rights.

  127. DexterJohnson says:

One more Hazel Dickens tune…one more typical of Hazel’s spirit: (Hazel passed last winter at age 75)

  128. oldseahag says:

chefsheila- Thanks for expanding on it all. “Really poor taste lol. But good for a rebellious soul!” That’s Patsi all over! I’m glad for her that you were there to share that with her, and glad for you that you had her for a friend. You wrote “you” but think you meant “her” very last post, and yes, I agree wholeheartedly. Unforgettable, in every way.

  129. oldseahag says:

Just flipping through Patsi’s fb and see the last time we connected of sorts was her post
“Dear auto correct, stop correcting my swear words you piece of shit.”

So, in the end (other than causing Craig any discomfort- never want to upset that sweet soul) I guess my string of cuss words was ok by Patsi.

  130. chefsheila says:

Haha! I wish I could figure out how to display the video I showed her last week. I said, “Make sure theirs Enought Oxygen!” and she wrote back,
    “HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!! “Another BOTTLE”

  131. Tonyb says:

    Hi Sheila,
Great reading you! At the top of page there’s a header that says “video” it explains how to post video’s..Experiment with it and if you don’t get it right, Craig will fix it.

    Here Comes the Sun

Our mastery of the material world, on the other hand, has advanced much more slowly. The sources of energy, the way we move stuff around, are much the same as they were a generation ago.

But that may be about to change. We are, or at least we should be, on the cusp of an energy transformation, driven by the rapidly falling cost of solar power. That’s right, solar power.

Gov. Kasich’s Signature Issue Going Down
    by Taylor Marsh

Is Gov. John Kasich blowing it for Republicans in Ohio? Too soon to tell if Kasich has also opened up an opportunity for Pres. Obama for 2012. However, one thing is clear, according to a new poll, Kasich’s poised to lose big this coming Tuesday. His anti-labor law, SB5, looks like it’s going down.

From PPP, a new poll that you’re going to love.

  134. linnie says:

I didn’t know Patsi, but it is enough for me to know that you loved her so much. That she was an advocate for women makes me grieve with you terribly. The recent assaults on women’s health care, particularly the “personhood” amendment in Mississippi has me spitting nails most days. I get so angry as I am a long time feminist who lived through the fight for women’s rights. These conservatives are not going to stop until they take away the right of women to control their bodies. I feel powerless to stop them and that makes me even angrier.

  135. solarcrete says:

Just stepping back in after a break from all things political; Im very sad and heart broken about Patsi, and Lardass…I spoke about how lardass was a brave as my Sister Maria that Passed away…how they both thought of others even tho they were in a world of pain…and now Patsi:

I lurked for over a year on the Trail, and decided that I just had to meet Patsi..she reminded me so much of my sister Maria…There was something real special that I shared with Patsi…she made us all feel like that…like we were special to her…

I did feel special a cpl of times when she did say that she was just like sister to me….and that she made me an uncle (cyber) uncle to little Maria….she emailed me pictures of her Father and others in her family….she wanted me to know them she said….

I used to tease her quite a bit( a little suggestive )…and some of the others….just to hear her say ” Solar in yer dreams”……I will alway’s have her in my dreams…………………

  136. solarcrete says:

Im crying like a big fucking baby……later

  137. solarcrete says:

    Patd,

Love you also…and will send all of the Solar energy that I can muster up……

  138. Jamie says:

    Hi Linnie,

Welcome even at this sad time for us. The Mississippi amendment is abhorrent. How the party that is opposed to government interference can expect the government to watch all the uteri in the state for transgressions is pure stupidity.

  139. oldseahag says:

    big (((hugs))) to you solar

Wonderful to see eveyone showing back up -- or those that did, anyway. And like your run of the mill wake, I hate the reason we’ve all shown back up. Kind of a virtual Big Freeze. I posted a few words on the Monday thread.

Good travels, Patsi. I’d wish you fair tides and a warm breeze at your back, but I figure you’d rather be beating into a chill wind against a foul tide with a big-ass smile on your face like you’ve always done around here (probably a poor analogy, but you get my drift)… Enjoy the trip -- no matter what trip it has turned out to be.
