Why Iowa shouldn’t matter:

  • No. 1: Caucuses don’t even pick binding convention delegates
  • No. 2: Winner’s raw vote total would fill 1/4 of an NFL stadium
  • No. 3: Only 100k of state’s 3 million residents participate
  • No. 4: Presidents Gephardt, Huckabee, Harkin, Robertson
  • No. 5: Saying its worth is “winnowing” field like family dog eating table scraps
  • No. 6: Winner gets maybe 6 unbound delegates out of more than 1,100 needed for nomination
  • No. 7: Five times more hogs there than people
  • No. 8: Ranks 30th in population, 22nd in obesity
  • No. 9: At 96.14% Caucasian, whiter than a “Justin Bieber Christmas-in-Norway Special” (courtesy Will Durst)
  • No. 10: After all this, 41% still can’t make up their minds?!?!

I have a question for those more politically astute than I. And dear Jamie tried on twitter but I’m about as thick as a brick. Obama is running unopposed, right? (Excluding delusional wingnuts). So are the Dems having caucuses (cauck-eye?) and primaries? And if they are, what the hell are they doing there? Does Obama have to show up or can he bank all that travel and ad expense and spend big time on the general? This is where polling is a little suspect — If I were asked those questions on the generic poll, I might in fact answer that I think the country is on the ‘wrong track.’ Or that I’m, say, ‘somewhat satisfied’ with Obama himself. But that doesn’t mean I’d park my vote with any of the occupants in the clown car in the republican circus. Pundits like to ‘read’ something into poll numbers, but truth be told, they’re paid for by some huge corporation or other, and the questions are always skewed. And there are so many polling companies now that most have a huge problem getting enough respondents to consent to doing surveys — and then their numbers are badly out of whack. Then there’s the problem with a huge basic difference between the parties. One believes that Government can make things better, the other thinks that Government is bad, and can only f**k up anything anyone wants to do. And then they go about trying to prove those two statements. Republicsns are better at that. They make Government a gridlock and then say, “see? We told you Government doesn’t work!”

The Santorum surge is believable. First note that 40% are undecided, suspect that more of those undecided are evangelicals than they are old time Republicans or libertarians. Even if the undecided were evenly drawn from the Republican population that still gives close to 20% for the evangelical candidate.
The way Rick Perry is attacking Santorum it is clear that Perry believes in the Santorum surge.

Running upstream, two important reasons to pay attention to the Iowa caucuses :
    1. Being the first contest, they are not influenced by the other primaries and caucuses.
    2. Iowegians usually caucus for people they admire or agree with strongly, and are not strongly influenced by tv advertising hype.
    3. Iowegians rarely choose candidates that Wall Street wants -- “Presidents Gephardt, Huckabee, Harkin, Robertson”. The Wall Street guys win the later contests.

My suspicion is that Iowegian puguglies will give 15 -- 20% each to 5 of the candidates, with two other candidates combined getting less than 10%.

This will mean that between 80 and 85% of Iowegian rippers don’t want each of the ‘major’ candidates. This outcome is surely related to the fact that rip up ideology has become both so stringent and narrow that the only differences between candidates are the incident of their past, the variations of personality, and the esthetics of appearance, voice, etc. This is another way of saying that the pug culture has become so universally imprinted upon the minds of card-carrying rippers -- and so ossified -- that the candidates are now interchangible. They have become a sort of gathering atop Lenin’s tomb: we know what every one of them thinks. What we don’t know is whether this one or that will have dissidents murdered, or merely renditioned to Guantanamo/Siberia.

Fmr. Senior Aide, US Cong. Ron Paul, 1997 – 2003
Campaign Coordinator, Ron Paul for Congress, 1995/96
National Organizer, Draft Ron Paul for President, 1991/92
Travel Aide/Personal Asst. Ron Paul, Libertarian for President
    1987/88

I have been asked by various media the last few days for my comments, view of the current situation regarding my former boss Ron Paul, as he runs for the presidency on the Republican ticket.

I’ve noticed in some media that my words have been twisted and used for an agenda from both sides. And I wish to set the record straight with media that I trust and know will get the story right: conservative/libertarian-conservative bloggers.

Is Ron Paul a “racist.” In short, No. I worked for the man for 12 years, pretty consistently. I never heard a racist word expressed towards Blacks or Jews come out of his mouth. Not once. And understand, I was his close personal assistant. It’s safe to say that I was with him on the campaign trail more than any other individual, whether it be traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska or Boston, Massachusetts in the presidential race, or across the congressional district to San Antonio or Corpus Christi, Texas.

He has frequently hired blacks for his office staff, starting as early as 1988 for the Libertarian campaign. He has also hired many Hispanics, including his current District staffer Dianna Gilbert-Kile.

One caveat: He is what I would describe as “out of touch,” with both Hispanic and Black culture. Ron is far from being the hippest guy around. He is completely clueless when it comes to Hispanic and Black culture, particularly Mexican-American culture. And he is most certainly intolerant of Spanish and those who speak strictly Spanish in his presence, (as are a number of Americans, nothing out of the ordinary here.)

Is Ron Paul an Anti-Semite? Absolutely No. As a Jew, (half on my mother’s side), I can categorically say that I never heard anything out of his mouth, in hundreds of speeches I listened too over the years, or in my personal presence that could be called, “Anti-Semite.” No slurs. No derogatory remarks.

He is however, most certainly Anti-Israel, and Anti-Israeli in general. He wishes the Israeli state did not exist at all. He expressed this to me numerous times in our private conversations. His view is that Israel is more trouble than it is worth, specifically to the America taxpayer. He sides with the Palestinians, and supports their calls for the abolishment of the Jewish state, and the return of Israel, all of it, to the Arabs.

Again, American Jews, Ron Paul has no problem with. In fact, there were a few Jews in our congressional district, and Ron befriended them with the specific intent of winning their support for our campaign. (One synagogue in Victoria, and tiny one in Wharton headed by a well-known Jewish lawyer).

On the incident that’s being talked about in some blog media about the campaign manager directing me to a press conference of our opponent Lefty Morris in Victoria to push back on Anti-Jewish charges from the Morris campaign, yes, that did happen. The Victoria Advocate described the press conference very accurately. Yes, I was asked (not forced), to attend the conference dressed in a Jewish yarlmuke, and other Jewish adornments.

There was another incident when Ron finally agreed to a meeting with Houston Jewish Young Republicans at the Freeport office. He berated them, and even shouted at one point, over their un-flinching support for Israel. So, much so, that the 6 of them walked out of the office. I was left chasing them down the hallway apologizing for my boss.

Is Ron Paul a homo-phobe? Well, yes and no. He is not all bigoted towards homosexuals. He supports their rights to do whatever they please in their private lives. He is however, personally uncomfortable around homosexuals, no different from a lot of older folks of his era.

There were two incidents that I will cite, for the record. One that involved me directly, and another that involved another congressional staffer or two.

(I am revealing this for the very first time, and I’m sure Jim Peron will be quite surprised to learn this.)

In 1988, Ron had a hardcore Libertarian supporter, Jim Peron, Owner of Laissez Faire Books in San Francisco. Jim set up a magnificent 3-day campaign swing for us in the SF Bay Area. Jim was what you would call very openly Gay. But Ron thought the world of him. For 3 days we had a great time trouncing from one campaign event to another with Jim’s Gay lover. The atmosphere was simply jovial between the four of us. (As an aside we also met former Cong. Pete McCloskey during this campaign trip.) We used Jim’s home/office as a “base.” Ron pulled me aside the first time we went there, and specifically instructed me to find an excuse to excuse him to a local fast food restaurant so that he could use the bathroom. He told me very clearly, that although he liked Jim, he did not wish to use his bathroom facilities. I chided him a bit, but he sternly reacted, as he often did to me, Eric, just do what I say. Perhaps “sternly” is an understatement. Ron looked at me directly, and with a very angry look in his eye, and shouted under his breath: “Just do what I say NOW.”

The second incident involved one or two other staffers many years later at the BBQ in Surfside Beach. I was not in direct presence of the incident. But another top staffer, and I believe one of our secretaries, was witnessed to it. This top staffer adores Ron, but was extremely insulted by his behavior, I would even say flabbergasted to the point of considering resigning from his staff over it.

“Bobby,” a well-known and rather flamboyant and well-liked gay man in Freeport came to the BBQ. Let me stress Ron likes Bobby personally, and Bobby was a hardcore campaign supporter. But after his speech, at the Surfside pavilion Bobby came up to Ron with his hand extended, and according to my fellow staffer, Ron literally swatted his hand away.

Again, let me stress. I would not categorize that as “homo-phobic,” but rather just unsettled by being around gays personally. Ron, like many folks his age, very much supports toleration, but chooses not to be around gays on a personal level. It’s a personal choice. And though, it may seem offensive to some, he has every right in my mind to feel and act that way.

Finally, let me make a couple observations. The liberal media is ferociously attacking Ron this morning, on everything from the Newsletters to his various PACs. I’m amused at how off-base they all are. If they are looking for something that went un-explained after many years, it’s the Nadia Hayes incident from the end of the presidential campaign in 1988. I personally am still a little ticked off by this, and surprised that nobody has ever followed up on it. In brief, Nadia was Ron’s longtime business/campaign manager in the 1980s. On the very last day of the presidential campaign, attorneys, accountants, and even Nassau Bay police dept. investigation officials stormed into our campaign office, sealed everything off, rushed us campaign staffers into the storeroom (literally), and for hours on end ruffled through the entire campaign records, file cabinets, and other papers.

Lew Rockwell and Burton Blumert were there too. We were greatly surprised by this. Nadia was eventually convicted of embezzlement and went to jail for 6 months, plus had to pay $140,000 in restitution to Ron.

There were rumors at the time, and long thereafter, that Lew and Burt had pinned it all on Nadia, and that they had their own reasons for the “coup.” For years afterwards, Rockwell, and Blumert had complete control of Ron’s enterprises through Jean McIver and (former JBS/Jesse Helms fundraiser) David “James” Mertz of northern Virginia.

It was easy to pin it all on Nadia. She lived extravagantly, and her husband who owned a boat repair business in Clear Lake, had recently had some serious financial problems.

Nadia never resurfaced, and was never heard from again.

I will attest, that when campaign consultant Tony Payton died of heart failure, in 2002 I believe, I specifically asked Ron if I could look Nadia up, and contact her to let her know that her longtime friend had died, and he reacted sternly to me, expressing that he did not want me to do that, and if I did, there would be serious consequences. I was shocked. And this was one of the reasons I eventually left his staff.

On one other matter, I’d like to express in the strongest terms possible, that the liberal media are focusing in on entirely the wrong aspects regarding controversies on Ron Paul.

It’s his foreign policy that’s the problem; not so much some stupid and whacky things on race and gays he may have said or written in the past.

Ron Paul is most assuredly an isolationist. He denies this charge vociferously. But I can tell you straight out, I had countless arguments/discussions with him over his personal views. For example, he strenuously does not believe the United States had any business getting involved in fighting Hitler in WWII. He expressed to me countless times, that “saving the Jews,” was absolutely none of our business. When pressed, he often times brings up conspiracy theories like FDR knew about the attacks of Pearl Harbor weeks before hand, or that WWII was just “blowback,” for Woodrow Wilson’s foreign policy errors, and such.

I would challenge him, like for example, what about the instances of German U-boats attacking U.S. ships, or even landing on the coast of North Carolina or Long Island, NY. He’d finally concede that that and only that was reason enough to counter-attack against the Nazis, not any humanitarian causes like preventing the Holocaust.

There is much more information I could give you on the sheer lunacy of his foreign policy views. Let me just concentrate on one in specific. And I will state this with absolute certainty:

Ron Paul was opposed to the War in Afghanistan, and to any military reaction to the attacks of 9/11.

He did not want to vote for the resolution. He immediately stated to us staffers, me in particular, that Bush/Cheney were going to use the attacks as a precursor for “invading” Iraq. He engaged in conspiracy theories including perhaps the attacks were coordinated with the CIA, and that the Bush administration might have known about the attacks ahead of time. He expressed no sympathies whatsoever for those who died on 9/11, and pretty much forbade us staffers from engaging in any sort of memorial expressions, or openly asserting pro-military statements in support of the Bush administration.

On the eve of the vote, Ron Paul was still telling us staffers that he was planning to vote “No,” on the resolution, and to be prepared for a seriously negative reaction in the District. Jackie Gloor and I, along with quiet nods of agreement from the other staffers in the District, declared our intentions to Tom Lizardo, our Chief of Staff, and to each other, that if Ron voted No, we would immediately resign.

Ron was “under the spell” of left-anarchist and Lew Rockwell associate Joe Becker at the time, who was our legislative director. Norm Singleton, another Lew Rockwell fanatic agreed with Joe. All other staffers were against Ron, Joe and Norm on this, including Lizardo. At the very last minute Ron switched his stance and voted “Yay,” much to the great relief of Jackie and I. He never explained why, but I strongly suspected that he realized it would have been political suicide; that staunchly conservative Victoria would revolt, and the Republicans there would ensure that he would not receive the nomination for the seat in 2002. Also, as much as I like to think that it was my yelling and screaming at Ron, that I would publicly resign if he voted “No,” I suspect it had a lot more to do with Jackie’s threat, for she WAS Victoria. And if Jackie bolted, all of the Victoria conservatives would immediately turn on Ron, and it wouldn’t be pretty.

If you take anything from this lengthy statement, I would hope that it is this final story about the Afghanistan vote, that the liberal media chooses to completely ignore, because it doesn’t fit their template, is what you will report.

If Ron Paul should be slammed for anything, it’s not some silly remarks he’s made in the past in his Newsletters. It’s over his simply outrageously horrendous views on foreign policy, Israel, and national security for the United States. His near No vote on Afghanistan. That is the big scandal. And that is what should be given 100 times more attention from the liberal media, than this Newsletter deal.

    4. a. It makes no sense to anyone other than advert firms and tv/radio stations to waste money on other states. If we force these, the only relevant states, to select the nominees, we could save money, time, and effort. In fact, we might as well leave the general election up to these 4 states also. Start the campaign on the 4th of July. Have the crucial states select the nominee on Labor Day, and have the entire cockamamie business done in 4 months.

    Place your bets NOW!

Yes, folks its time to participate in Iowa’s great quadrennial game of chance.

For your edification and pleasure, here are some of the more intriguing proposition bets for tonight’s festivities.

Easy money at 2:1 — The groundhog sees his shadow and the Republican nomination process continues for 10 more weeks of increasingly nasty knife-fighting.

Even money — I’m setting the over/under line on Republican caucus turnout at 125,000.

Iowa Republican Chair Matt Strawn has been boasting about increased Republican registration and how organized all the campaigns are for tonight’s contest.

[Folks, I'm taking the under, betting that Mitt's middle isn't passionate enough to turn out.]

D turnout exceeds R 4:1 — Despite activists’ urgent needs to pass hortatory resolutions on Keystone Pipeline and Iran, there’s absolutely no reason for the Democrats to leave the Sugar Bowl in their nice cozy living rooms and go caucus. Yet, the Obama campaign has been touting how well organized they are?

Parlay bet of a lifetime 13:1 — Take the under on the Republicans and the over on Democrats turning out in greater numbers. Pundit alert: If this occurs, the chattering class will wax grandeloquent predicting that Obama will win Iowa and swing states in November.

Off the Board: Candidates individually and collectively announcing that they exceeded expectations--even Michelle Bachmann.

When it comes to money, you need to look at surrounding states for “bleeding” of the message. Iowa is a great deal cheaper in advertising costs, but the Illinois market can see a great deal of Iowa advertising. The same holds for North Carolina/Virginia and New Hampshire/Massachusetts.

These campaigns need to put their money where it will have the most reach. Of course the Internet is now creating it’s own level of reach where the biggest cites are free to access and the more news you make there, the more you reach younger people.

Ditto to xrep’s comments, adding only that for something that should be “ignored,” a heckuva lotta money has been spent by candidates to get 100k folks to caucus for them.

The most important thing to come out of this may rest in how many indies Ron Paul has been able to get to register as Republican so they can caucus for him. Ron Paul running as a 3rd-party candidate is the GOP’s worst nightmare. If gets any play out of Iowa and then goes that route, Iowa will be shown to have had great importance by dint of ultimately helping Obama.

So, Newt & Santorum cried and that was OK, but when Hillary did it…yes, I’m still on a puma rant.

The strongest gust in Scotland today was recorded at Blackford Hill on the south side of Edinburgh at 102 miles per hour between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., Chivers said. In Glasgow the wind reached 91 miles per hour.

The last 60 days on the North Sea , have been pretty amazing. This is the fourth storm to hit Scotland in the last 30 days, with winds of 100 mph or greater. Dec. 8th saw gusts to 165 mph. As they roll Northeast they smack into Norway, which had 120 mph winds over Christmas.

As the extra heat builds in the oceans and then streams northward in the form of water vapor every fall & winter, insurance on the North Sea is going to get pricey. What one needs to understand about the changes we’re seeing is this :
Heat seeks cold, that simple rule drives the water cycle. And water being vaporized in warmer latitudes goes looking for a colder spot to release the heat it picked up during the vaporization . As the water vapor heat exchange grows, the violence in the release of this heat does as well. Over Oklahoma it does it at 60,000 feet, making 6 inch diameter hail stones , on the coast of Norway it makes 98 foot waves. In Thailand it’s raining 25 inches in 72 hours.
The scary part is there’s no real upper limit on how violent all this can get.

    Paradigm shift for insurance
Thailand seen as risky by global reinsurers

Four years ago, two leading international reinsurers _ Munich Re and Swiss Re _ scaled back their exposure in Thailand, focusing only on select local clients.

And just in the wake of the floods, leading French reinsurer the CCR Group informed its partners in New Zealand, Australia and Thailand to stop underwriting in those countries, citing the high frequency of severe natural disaster losses in the past 12 months.

“This means the capital fund capacity of international reinsurers, which Thai insurance firms have counted on for several years, is limited,” Mr Surachai said. “Thai insurers must now manage financial risk.”

Flood coverage used to be practically free for clients who bought fire insurance to protect property such as homes, townhouses and commercial buildings.

Santorum Surge and Alan Colmes’ Callousness

    by Taylor Marsh

There are whispers out of Iowa that this last event between Lowry and Colmes could give Santorum that last lift needed to land him in the winner’s circle.

However, none of the candidates are of the caliber of Pres. Obama, with Mitt Romney the only Republican who can come close to the campaign needed to take on Barack Obama, who is as formidable a politician as we’ve seen in the modern era, which is how he’s been able to fake Democrats and progressives out of their own party.

People ask all the time where have all the moderate Republicans gone?

They now comprise the bulk of the Democratic Party, with the most famous moderate Republican in America the President himself.

Solar, re the dondero article :

ron paul strenuously and repeatedly asserts that the US should not have “gone to war against Hitler to save the Jews”, despite the fact that the reich had been torpedoing American ships for a year, and on December 10, 1941 declared war on us. What an incredibly stupid bigot paul must be. I repeat : the US didn’t begin to make war on germany until AFTER the germans declared war on the US !

A fellow may make a mistake like this once, but upon being informed of the facts, his failure to correct his view is a sign of something very wrong. To say repeatedly that we made war against germany to save Jews is obstinate, willful, ignorance. This accusation (after all, it is an accusation) against FDR, the US Congress, and the American people, white-washes german aggression, and is complicit with nazi and neo-nazi propaganda that claims german attacks and murders were entirely defensive. This accusation is part of the complex that goebbels called ‘The Big Lie” : that the invasion of Czechoslovakia was to protect german nationals from Czech oppression; that the invasion of Poland was a defense against of “Polish aggression”; that the war with Britain was the work of the Bank of England and Winston Churchill; that the attack on russia was to prevented russia from attacking an unprepared germany, and finally, that the war with the US was to defend Jews. All this is a fabric of guile, composed entirely of lies, woven to disinform credulous people and those who are predisposed to blaming any of the victims.

Setting aside the “Jewish problem”, how does paul feel about the german genocide against Gypsies ? Would America be unjustified in opposing that too ?

Where does responsibility for the well-being of our fellow humans end ? Clearly paul draws the line at our national boundary, but what if it were Oklahomans committing genocide against Choctaws ? Using paul’s ‘logic’ would either Texas or the USA have any say in the matter ? Do paul’s ‘rights’ also apply within state boundaries ? Does the state, county, or city even have a right to prevent murder on private property ?

  86. Santorum V Romney for Nomination

There is only one candidate in the GOP presidential primary field who has consistently garnered a strong majority of the vote in state and national polls and that is ‘Non Rom’. Of course the Non Rom vote is divided among a half dozen candidates (with the exception of Ron Paul who is just as mired at 12% as Romney is at 25%) but it is really just one voting block searching for the right candidate to bless with their 60% support, as has been proven by the fact that the total Non Rom vote has stayed almost identical as one leader after another rises and falls. But this might not go on forever and Romney is far more vulnerable than he appears.

If the Non Rom options were all viable candidates, then Romney would win with his quarter of support as he watched the dirty half dozen fight for the table scraps, but they’re not. Every single Non Rom candidate have disqualified themselves through scandal or incompetence or duplicity, except one. That is Rick Santorum.

I didn’t see this Santorum opening coming and I have to admit up front, I would die for President Obama, my vote is a done deal for him. But as a Liberal born and raised and still ensconced in the Deeeep South, I know for a fact that Santorum has managed to situate himself in the center of Conservative Consciousness and I mean Tea Party People. They like him fine and yet, he’s not nearly as crazy as the rest of the candies and he seems to be a literal ‘zero baggage’ honest guy like President Obama, though they are polar opposites on many subjects, they really have a lot in common in demeanor.

So Santorum is the obvious ‘Coalesce Around’ guy left standing V Romney. If he finishes 2nd to Romney in Iowa then he will finish 2nd to Romney in NH. At that point it would almost inevitably come down to Romney V Santorum and I think Santorum would, and should win.

Much of yesterday the Banque Populaire crew spent in survival mode in 40+ knot winds as the front passed them, attempting to keep the boat speed down to 30 knots to preserve the structure of their 40m long trimaran. Over the last 12 hours the 40m maxi-tri has been easing her course north, away from the strongest winds generated by the depression, but with the more serious aim of avoiding ice.

Overnight Banque Populaire passed iceberg B-15J. Still around 12 miles long by 5 wide, B-15J is the largest remnant of iceberg B15 which when it calved from the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000 was 4,150 square miles in size (or half the size of Wales, 28 times the size of the Isle of Wight). In November this year, B-15J was located at 55.3°S 159.4°W, but has since drifted northeast at around 0.5 knots to 53°10S 154.40E

Tony and Katherine… it was not much of a difference because Belgium has so many layers of government that most services were still able to proceed. However, the Flemish Nationalists were absolutely refusing to negotiate on any issues or compromise. Because they were the biggest vote winners in Flemish Belgium, and the most vote percentages in all of Belgium, they were expected to form a government. But they had their agenda and they were not going to let go of it.

For me, waiting for a national government has help up my nationality request to become a Belgian. It’s been more than 3 years now in waiting. Frustrating. However we now have a French speaking Prime Minister, the first in around 40 years. It is my hope that Prime Minister Di Rupo will reach out and create a unified Belgium.

Our health system remains VERY strong and that is perhaps one of the best aspects of the social state in Belgium. Unfortunately, EU countries are supposedly not able to do any deficit spending. In Belgium, the prices of everything is rising, including taxes. Most Belgians take this on with a shrug and acceptance. Belgium is the only EU country that I know of which indexes the worker wages on the basis of inflation. This is something Germany, France, and many other EU countries do not like. And while Belgium is now working on its own austerity plans, it will not be bullied. However, the only down side of the last government negotiation that almost ended, was the cause of the lowering of credit rating in Belgium. The Flemish Liberals (aka Republicans in the states), found objectionable pieces in the final rounds of negotiation, and the whole thing almost fell apart again. The credit rating finally SCARED the Flemish Liberals and all the other 5 parties working on a coalition government, to get things DONE and they did. So in this situation the credit downgrade made progress happen. Strange isn’t it?

Any other questions? I am glad to share what I know.

It was a razor close race, but Iowa has chosen. Mitt Romney pulled out a close victory over Rick Santorum, winning by a very narrow margin. Despite being tied at 25% of the vote apiece, Romney scratched out an eight vote victory.

Media literacy is sadly missing in political, economic, and social debates. The myth that the mainstream media has a liberal bias is simply that. It’s a lie but has been repeated over and over again until society itself believes what they have been spoon fed.

Here is some media literacy resources for everyone to consider, if that is something you are willing to learn.

    http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=101

Independent, aggressive and critical media are essential to an informed democracy. But mainstream media are increasingly cozy with the economic and political powers they should be watchdogging. Mergers in the news industry have accelerated, further limiting the spectrum of viewpoints that have access to mass media. With U.S. media outlets overwhelmingly owned by for-profit conglomerates and supported by corporate advertisers, independent journalism is compromised.

Ultimately, FAIR believes that structural reform is needed to break up the dominant media conglomerates, establish independent public broadcasting, and promote strong, non-profit alternative sources of information.

Check out these links for more of FAIR’s analysis of the media business: You can find each heading here: http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=101 If you find it interesting, I’d like to hear what you think:

One reason NOT to ignore Iowa:

Iowa proved the GOP is divided into factions that would rather lose the general election than work together.

The one thing they all have in common is a contempt for compromise; they see politics as “total war,” where victory must be achieved by any means necessary, ESPECIALLY when fighting inside the party.

Obama Given Low Marks In Annual ACLU Report For Civil Liberties — Ranked Lower Than Paul
By Jonathan Turley, January 3, 2012

While this is unlikely to surprise many civil libertarians, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has issued its annual report card called “Liberty Watch 2012” and gave President Obama a failing report (earning the full four “torches” only on the issue of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy). The Republican candidates were equally dismal but it is rare for the Democratic candidate to be on par or lower than his GOP counterparts on civil liberties. Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson secured the top civil liberties spot while Republican Ron Paul came in second ahead of Obama.

The only category on which Obama did particularly well was on his support in ending “don’t ask, don’t tell” even though he remains undecided on the issue of same sex marriage. He lost points for breaking promises on Guantanamo Bay, surveillance of citizens, failing to hold employees accountable for torture and other issues — many of which we have discussed on this blog.

I’m not a member of any political party… I’m an independent. I am left of center… and have not voted for a Republican since 2000. But that’s because that party has been pulled so far to the right. If it ever manages to find it’s center again and think highly of moderates, I’d consider voting for Republicans again.

I will vote Democratic in the general election. However, I’m in complete agreement with KGC’s 11:56 post. I think the money in politics has corrupted both sides.

As for the NH primary next week…. Obama will win and be the party’s nominee. I can choose to vote for him.
Or I can take a Republican ballot and choose for who I’d rather have run against him… either as a serious candidate… or the one I think he’d beat.

If there was a race on the Democratic side, I’d take a Democratic ballot for sure. I’m having a hard time making up my mind which Republican I could put my X next to and still live with myself.

Either way… I believe the nominees for both parties will be owned by the corporations lock, stock, and barrel…. and that is not a good thing for our country or the world.

The start of her demise was the Gardasil vaccine comment. NBC “news” rushed to protect the vaccine; it was the lead story.

Isn’t it intersting that someone sat on the boards of both NBC Universal and Merck (maker of Gardasil). And if you check the CDC website on the stuff, there have been reports of adverse reactions to the stuff, including paralysis and death.

Was hoping for at least a 2nd place finish for Dr. Paul. Hoping that he does go the 3rd party road….not to win, but to get the country to think about his military stance, the irs, if we can replace the news papers with the internet, the post office with email, we can replace the way that we file our taxes…,,yesterday I heard that someone donated a heart, or something that saved persons life via face book….a way for all, including the corps that don’t pay a penny at tax time…

not giving $ to other country’s for buying our military weapons, (free $ that comes from our taxes).

Ron Paul may be some kind of nut….but we would all be nuts not to listen to common sense…..

I hate his son Rand Paul, as much as I hate Rick Santorum….if I saw him in person…..don’t know if I could resist knocking his Racist ass to the ground…

Tony you were talking about what ifs..and about Gore….Gore was talking about courage….if he had any we wouldn’t be in the shape that we are in….he did not have the heart to fight for the country all the way (do you think that if it was the other way around, Bush would have given up, having the most popular vote?)…..he gave up, and gave Bush 43 his chance to listen to God, and now have the latest crusades going on for a piece of land that the bible says existed…the holy land is a myth just like the bible….but religion has killing (still) millions upon millions……this was the real reason that I wanted Paul to win…but his most of what he says is right on….and what the young people of the country see in him….I do Agree that he has said some very stupid things.

Most of what was said on current tv ( not so opportunistic young turks)…sucked as much as any other cable bs station…

They dismissed a third place finish by Paul, and showered (Gore did also) compliments to the last place finisher…..the coward should have sounded like he talked last night when he was running for potus….fluent…not like me, fluent only at times…his wife had the courage in his family…and still does…..Tony, yes the dumb shit ran away from Clinton…..but he also lost his own home state…oh yeah its a red state….

    Jack,
Im not mad b/c i won’t get a ….PONY….im just surprised that the american people are so used to getting two piles of shit from the blue and red Clydesdale……I guess we can get used to any stench if it is around long enough……….
