I totally agree with Bill on this one. These stooges could scare ya back to the devil. I still can’t figure out the GOP strategy. That’s why I keep thinking that getting Obama re-elected is part of their strategy.

And with all these debates..they want to make sure if you don’t already know enough about these guys to scare ya off..they will give you more opportunities to learn.

I think Floridians are generally loyal to their newspapers, but that loyalty doesn’t extend to acceptance of characterizations of editorial opinions of candidates.

The Time’s effort at morphing into the ‘Tampa Bay’ newspaper from the St Petersburg Times puts them at an editorial crossroads; methinks the Times traditional liberal bent will not cross Tampa Bay easily.

That’s why I don’t trust the article that Patd linked--I think it was written for the more conservative Tampa crowd in an effort to sell newspapers. While it’s interesting, I don’t think it necessarily accurately reflects the situation on the ground.

flatus, attribution at end to miami herald and mcclatchy reporters.

btw, are there any liberal or lib leaning newspapers left in florida? or voters for that matter given the state’s current gov.

  8. Flatus says:

Thanks, Pat, for the clarification on what I missed--it puts it in context the Herald being what it is. The Time’s still made the editorial decision to go with it.

I think many of the true liberals are like Stinky and Me--packed up and left. It was so disheartening seeing so-called Floridians selling their natural treasures to carpetbaggers so that unknown people could ‘earn’ carried interest.

I don’t know about liberal papers in the Florida market--my surmise is that many papers will do anything they can to survive,

The salvation for the free press may be in the neighborhood advertiser supported publications that follow local political meetings and land-use issues. They can be very effective as they are well read.

    Bill Maher…. gotta luv him.

I saw last night on MSNBC, that a poll taken by CBS news showed that 91% approved of Obama’s SOTU speech. I guess Maher and myself weren’t the only ones glad to see an adult speak after months of nothing but the GOP gong show.

BTW… Cooper doesn’t do himself any favors by being ignorant of Maher’s schtick.

So is Mr. Maher basically deciding for the “lesser of all evils”? It’s not a crime. Hell, I was done with Obama too but, as always, the risks of a Repug taking over the White House is just something I can NOT fathom.

Ok, so, seriously, here is a composite of the Republican position (excluding Mr. Paul). The Republicans, once elected, will reduce taxes, eliminate regulations governing things like financial transactions, safe food, drugs and consumer products, substantially increase Defense spending, begin projects to land men on Mars and colonize the moon within eight years, democratize and liberalize Afghanistan, Iran and Syria, kick all the remove all Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza, end all illegal immigration, deport all illegal aliens (except that Newt would make an exception for church goers) end abortion and contraception that might offend some churches, end high school drop outs, fire all incompetents wherever they might exist, get out of people’s lives and allow liberty and democracy to thrive throughout the Universe. OH, And balance the budget and eliminate the deficit.

    Sounds like a plan.

The one absolute truth about liberals is that they rarely agree on what to do to be liberal or how to achieve it. It is built into the DNA of being able to think, analyze, and perceive nuance. This is something foreign to most conservatives who prefer orderly, unexamined “truths” whether or not they are actually true.

Jury duty was the justice system at its most efficient. Tuesday, got selected for a panel, started voir dire long enough to give name and occupation; got sent out at end of afternoon. Came back Wednesday, plaintiff had pled out. Sat around jury gathering place for a whole day while the courts decided what they needed until released at end of day. Called in last night to be told they didn’t need my group today. Get to call in after 5:00 today to see if they need us on Friday. Recycle and repeat until I’m no longer on call through next week. I’ll keep everyone updated.

I did jury duty this month also starting on Jan 3. reported at 8am and sat around and was told what judge to report to at 1pm same day. Sat around with 59 of my closest friend till voir dire and then break time and then back into the court room and they announced the 12 people they wanted for the jury. I was not one of them. It was a child sex abuse trial. Those of us not picked went back downstairs and turned in our badges and received our check for $4.00. I spent more than that on lunch. We were released and did not have to come down to the court house or check in again.

    Dr. Dooty

Pierce County keeps you tied up for a two week stretch. You report in the first day and then depending on what happens, you can be brought in daily. It saves them money and time. We get $10 a day plus mileage for every day we are required to report.

Hillary Clinton has Attended Last SOTU as Obama’s SoS

    by Taylor Marsh

I tweeted about this likelihood on Tuesday. She’ll no doubt work up until the very last second on her very last day, for which Pres. Obama is no doubt grateful, as are we all.

We can only imagine that it’s “a little odd for me to be totally out of an election season,” as she also admits she “didn’t watch any of those debates.”

After she leaves State, Hillary Clinton will be able to rest, write, and then assess other options. This includes, come 2014, coming to grips on whether she’s ready to walk away from another run for the White House and possibly being the first female president of the United States.

Christie Avoids All the Thorns in the Thicket of Gay Marriage
    By KATE ZERNIKE

Democrats in the State Legislature, who are pushing a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, were hoping to force Mr. Christie to take a position, believing that if he vetoed such a measure, as he has threatened in the past, he would define himself as out of step with a public that increasingly favors it.

But on Monday, the day before a big hearing on the legislation, Mr. Christie nominated an openly gay man to the state’s highest court, prompting a valentine from New Jersey’s most prominent gay-rights advocate that stunned even some of the governor’s friends for its effusiveness.

Democratic hopes rose: Did this signal that Mr. Christie, an enforcer when it comes to party discipline, would free Republicans to support the bill? But just as Democrats were identifying Republican supporters, Mr. Christie’s office sent word of another surprise on Tuesday: The governor announced that he believed same-sex marriage should be put before voters in November. Republicans whom Democrats had been counting on quickly backed him.
