It’s the Delegates, Stupid

Chatting with Keith Olbermann about what really happened in Tuesday’s Michigan primary. Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum tied where it counts: DELEGATES …

(“Countdown,” Current TV, 2/29)

Media momentum fun and games in the GOP presidential race are behind us now. The race for delegates is on and supposed frontrunner Mitt Romney has only a bit over 10 percent of what he needs for the nomination.

It’s complicated. There are only four states left that are 100 percent winner-take-all for delegates, offering a combined total of only 123 delegates out of the 1,144 needed to win. The rest are awarded by a variety of formulas that will allow all four contenders chances to rack up delegates without winning the entire state, possibly even preventing a frontrunner from reaching the magic number before the convention.

Here’s a look ahead at upcoming dates for primaries and caucuses offering the largest chunks of delegates:

March 6 (Super Tuesday): 424
OH, GA, TN, OK, VA, ND, WY, MA, VT, ID, AK

April 3: 92
WI, DC, MD

April 24: 150
PA, NY, CT, DE, RI

May 8: 107
NC, IN, WV

June 5: 264
CA, NJ, NM, SD, MT

  1. Of course it’s about the delegates -- how Romney can claim victory by getting 4% more votes in his “home” state after outspending the crap out of Santorum and splitting the delegates evenly is beyond me. Still, my money is on Romney for the nomination. I hate to see that since I do believe he’s the ‘cants’ best chance against Obama (latest Gallup poll has Romney up by 4% over Obama in a head to head race, but the O camp hasn’t started spending money yet), but that’s what I think is the most likely outcome.

  2. patd… yeah… but… when you invite a bunch of pigs to your party, you shouldn’t be surprised when they leave mud on the floor.

Craig… what? are you suggesting that the media doesn’t really analyze what it’s reporting… I’m speechless!

  3. In 08 we could count delegates almost hourly between HRC and Obama. I still get the feeling that nobody on the republican side can say with any certainty how many delegates they have. Very strange way to run primaries.

  4. Can we have just a little bit of sympathy for these folks?

Wall Street Bonus Withdrawal Means Trading Aspen for Coupons

Schiff, 46, is facing another kind of jam this year: Paid a lower bonus, he said the $350,000 he earns, enough to put him in the country’s top 1 percent by income, doesn’t cover his family’s private-school tuition, a Kent, Connecticut, summer rental and the upgrade they would like from their 1,200-square- foot Brooklyn duplex. …………..
    ….
“People who don’t have money don’t understand the stress,” said Alan Dlugash, a partner at accounting firm Marks Paneth & Shron LLP in New York who specializes in financial planning for the wealthy. “Could you imagine what it’s like to say I got three kids in private school, I have to think about pulling them out? How do you do that?”

  5. For those who didn’t know the theater side of Davy (who preferred David) Jones. He was the original “Artful Dodger” in “Oliver”. For the horse lovers amongst us, he actually spent time as a Jockey.

  6. “People who don’t have money don’t understand the stress,”

I am so grateful to be among the poor and lead a stress free life! WTF?

  7. Really enjoyed the appearance with Olbermann Just the whole idea of reporting what really happened vs the “repetitive meme of the day” was original. If you watch a lot of news and most in here seem to watch a LOT of news, you get to the point where you can tell when the producer is rerunning old film as a drop in after a host introduction. By the end of the day, you have it all memorized and still don’t know anything actually true about goings on in the great wide world.

Not that I feel sorry for him, but several decades ago, there was a book about these types called “How To Go Broke on $100,000 A Year”. It actually can be a problem for these middle management types in certain industries/cities. Did you note that a family of four is living in a 1200 square foot apartment in New York. That apartment in a good neighborhood can sell for a million dollars. Add in cab fares, certain style of dress, they way you are expected to entertain, cost of meals etc. It doesn’t take long to exhaust even a very high salary. Of course they are wasting a lot of money maintaining a style that isn’t really necessary, but I can understand that it can be depressing after several high flying years.

  9. Jamie… I just read of the passing of Breitbart on HuffPo. It’s always a shame to see someone that young (43) die… but it does prove the point that being hateful isn’t healthy and can kill you. Hopefully now, he’ll rest in peace.

  10. The Wall Street guys are learning a lesson (maybe) that folks elsewhere have had to learn about financial planning and living within one’s means. The guy’s kid goes to a $32,000 per year private school at age 10. (Santorum would rate him a snob I suppose). And I don’t begrudge him that -- LP goes to a private school, too, so I don’t throw stones -- but it ain’t no $32K per year. He’s the marketing director for an international trade company (they sell gold and precious metals) who couldn’t parlay his $350K per year into enough to get out of 1200 s.f. in Brooklyn as the price of gold tripled over the past five years. (here’s their website http://www.europac.net/) If this doesn’t stand as an example of the illusion of wealth and false prospect of success, I cant imagine what would.

Many people suffer from a way of thinking “The way life has been is the way it will always be”. It may not have made for the easiest of childhoods, but I learned early that the only constant in life is change. What you have today can be gone instantly and anything you can’t walk away from owns you, you don’t own it.

You plan as much as possible for the future, but accept what comes while living in the present and not looking back except for joyful memory. Once you learn that lesson, smiling at everything and everyone gets a great deal easier.

    mr. dlugash,
    1. meet our trail friend blonde wino.
    2. you call yourself a financial planner?

  13. jamie, are you sure that isn’t ben nelson from nebraska? bill (not ben) is usually considered one of the good guys.

  14. News said Bill but may be Ben. Mentioned as Democrat and both are. This is a day requiring two TVs. I’m watching the Senate debate would like to be hearing commentary with it.

  15. This has been another nasty week for the rippers.
    1. fake moderate snowe (r-ME) threw in the towel,
    2. fake moderate dreier (r-CA) threw in the towel,
    3. angry andy breitbart died,
    4. Cenk didn’t die,
    5. spymaster jimmy murdoch fled to New York, reminding people that the criminous ripper conspiracy also operates on this side of the pond,
    6. willard won the primary in AZ.
    7. willard won the primary in MI.

  16. Dear Mr. Dlugash,

People who have money don’t understand the stress.

You want to understand stress ?

    1. Look at pictures of people who are undernourished. Compare those pictures to pictures of rich people.

2.Consult with people who don’t have a safe place to keep their meds, or a dependable timepiece to help them take their meds on time. Next consult with the servants who make sure rich people have their meds and get on time.

    3. Above all, look at the difference between the life expectancies of people in the top 20% and the bottom 20%.

With all due respect, sir, you don’t know shit about stress.

    Warm regards,
    John Q. Xrepublican

    It’s the stupid delegates…

as for Andrew Breitbart I’ll let Bette Davis speak for me
The reporting says he died of natural causes --proving hate kills (hat tip to RR who pointed this out earlier)

  18. Haven’t read the entire thread, so you may already know this, but Andrew Breitbart has died.

  19. Just read the entire thread, and see you already knew about Breitbart…can’t say I care that such a hate-filled man has shuffled off. I agree with Renee and KGC…hate can kill you….

  20. The Blunt amendment -- the one Romney agreed with, then didn’t, or vice versa ….NO, WAIT!!!!!

It’s absolutely despicable that 48 Senators voted against tabling that amendment.

  21. Regarding bernie Sanders, it should not matter whether you are male or female on bringing that amendment to the floor. That amendment should not have even been thought up much less written down and pushed out to the floor. Whoever uttered those ideas first should have been smacked upside their head.

About Breitbart, *horns grow* is drinking excessively considered natural causes?

  22. Don’t feel bad about talking smack about Breitbart being dead…remember what he did when Ted Kennedy died

Pursed Lips Morgan called Breitbart a well informed Journalist which is such crap of course since Morgan comes from Murdoch — he wouldn’t know a real journalist if he fell on one

  23. Breitbart was a propagandist and a dishonest one as well

To celebrate his career is to promote the current state of incivility that exists in politics

  24. KGC summed my thoughts up in those two posts.
The world is a better place today. From the way he behaved in public, I doubt that he behaved in private any better. His family has my sympathy but then they always have.

    Jack

kgc, roflmao as dear patsi would say

  26. Rush Limbaugh is being even more loathsome than usual. Isn’t there some way to get this man off the air waves for obscenity. Demanding any woman whose birth control is taxpayer covered should put films of them having sex on the internet for him and others to “enjoy”. We can only hope he gets a meeting with Breitbart soon.

  27. Michigan Republicans voted to award two at-large delegates to Mitt Romney “despite the party’s rules that the two at-large delegates are supposed to be awarded on a proportional basis based on the statewide popular vote,” the Detroit Free Press reports.

from taegan’s politicalwire. mitt now gets 16 to sancto’s 14.

  28. Jamie, wow that is really deplorable what Limbaugh said. Unfortunately, it proves that he and his loyal followers only see women as objects placed on earth for their own bidding. I wish politicians would denounce him for those vile statements but, they cannot see beyond their ridiculous machinations to know right from wrong.

  29. mqw

That was actually useful information. I follow Exchange rates but wasn’t aware that oil followed gold standard. Of course if the speculators are gambling in the futures market on the “purchase price” of that barrel rather than its base value, then it doesn’t matter what the declared value might be. Right now the tulips are very very expensive.

  30. So Satan finally gets too give Andrew Breitbart the spot he had reserved for him next to the rest of the racist, bigoted, homophobic fascist nazi republicans.

Good riddance is all I have to say about Breitbart.

    Have a nice day.

Who does Limpballs support for president? They should be asked about this. Wouldn’t that include all Federal employees including member of the military and Republican Congresswomen —

    Republicans should denounce him

  32. Matthews covering Limbaugh obscenities with clips. Watch if you can. If the GOP leadership doesn’t condemn these statements, they don’t deserve to hold public office. This isn’t free speech, it is libel, and the young girl who testified before Congress should sue them all. I don’t think she is a “Public Figure” who has to take this sort of abuse.

  33. Sandra Fluke will be on Ed Schultz. I would hope that Olbermann will get her as well. That young woman has a multi million dollar settlement in her future.

  34. Rush went on a rampage, mocking Fluke for wanting taxpayers to pay for her birth control, and for insisting that Georgetown University, a Catholic institution, pay for it:

“What does it say about the college co-ed Sandra Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex, what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps. (interruption) The johns? We would be the johns? No! We’re not the johns. (interruption) Yeah, that’s right. Pimp’s not the right word. Okay, so she’s not a slut. She’s “round heeled.” I take it back.

Republicans must be so proud that this is the voice of conservatism in America I hope she figures out a way to sue him.

Clearly the calculation is better have have the rightwing religious nutcase community because a majority of women already knew Republicans were out of touch

  35. Jamie
The reason you didn’t know oil was priced in gold is because it is not. It is priced in US Dollars. As any good spinner the man did make one valid point, as the dollor falls it will put upward pressure on the price of oil so one should expect some effect but A look at the a chart of the dollar
And the spot market for WTI crude oil

There is some corelation but not a lot.

  36. The only time Mittens seems genuine is when he talks about his wife.

When he talks about the most important thing in his life — his says without hesitation My wife. And he says he was lucky to fall in love young. After that it’s all down hill. It’s just not enough to be president.

  37. Thanks Jack

I thought that was a little odd as I had always heard it used dollars. There was an article I caught in passing a while back that said there was some fear that they would start using another currency and then the Euro went into the toilet and nothing more was said.

One very simple concept that some people find hard to quite get their brains around is that money is only worth what people agree it is worth and it doesn’t matter how much of it you have only what it will buy.

Of course this is at the heart of the fall of the middle class. Government really needs to adjust the contents of the “shopping bag” that they use to measure purchasing ability.

  38. hey Jamie… hey KGC… you two have been awesome in your comments today…

    you go girls…. GO!

  39. RR

Just kept hearing a “Patsi” voice in my head all day. I’m thoroughly amazed that Limbaugh hasn’t been struck by lightening or erupted in boils.

  40. Romney- “I used to own some zoos.”
    In honor of Andrew Breitbart…

    Did I Dream This?

Mitt Romney was asked what his favorite movie was and he answered…

“I liked that movie about zoos, buying a zoo. I owned some zoos once, that is, a parent company of some zoos was purchased by Bain and we actually ran some zoos for a while. It was really amazing to tour some of the facilities. Some were beautiful, others poorly run. As a result of bad management we had to lay off some lions and then later the tigers and bears because their food was too expensive. And I tell you what, I learned a lot from that experience that will help me fight president Obama’s socialist agenda.”

  41. KGC
Thank you, I had been looking for a fun way to buy an ad ever since Craig ran the sale that first week.
BTW Craig is a very restrained and polite editor when I made a typo on my graphic. I do appreciate this blog and as the old saying goes “There is no better praise than the folding kind”

    Jack

  42. About Rushbo,

If I were a Democratic money machine I would take Limbaugh’s voice and spread it to the world.
Aim it at Republicans and independents “are you a Republican? Is this you? Maybe it is time to leave, look at your local Democratic candidate send a message. This has no place in politics.” Only write it up a little better.

    Jack

  43. My mama told me If you can’t say something about the dead that’s good….don’t say nothing…..He’s dead. Good.
    —Moms Mably

fuck him, may he rot like discarded salmon.

  44. “Rush Limbaugh, the most compelling argument to date for the Fairness Doctrine.”

And…Rush Limbaugh, the most compelling argument to date for retroactive birth control.

Were I a woman who uses birth control, I’d post a video for Rush…of me taking my birth control pill. That’s as close to my sex life as he would EVER get!

  45. And…Rush Limbaugh, the most compelling argument to date for retroactive birth control.

Makes ya wish for a time machine.
Show mama Limbaugh her son’s future rant. I’m reasonably certain she would opt for irreversible sterilization.

  46. I guess in death Breitbart got what he could not achieve in life, a sense of legitimacy at least among the right.
    Bravo!

What the Hell did Shirley Sherrod get? I think they call it the shaft.

  47. Obama Playing Defense Over Gas Prices & GOP Attacks
    by Taylor Marsh

But I bet you if you conducted random interviews across the country with average Americans you wouldn’t get many who are aware that Pres. Obama has presided over a surge in energy production and the decline in U.S. dependency on foreign oil.

With Newt Gingrich squealing about $2/gallon gas, which is a fantasy, while Republicans blame Pres. Obama for the price of gas, it’s clear nobody on the right cares about the facts.

  48. I DEMAND the 16.9 cent gas that we had in Oklahoma when that God Fearing Republican, Lyndon Johnson, was president.

What. You say he was a Democrat?
