Yep Craig..Obama has been more conservative about almost everything than Romney was when he was governor. I don’t think we can know who will show up for either of these guys if they are elected. We can debate it until the cows come home but it’s anyone’s guess. Does anyone here have good ESP??

Mittens wasn’t anti-gun. He said he wouldn’t chip away at the Mass gun laws but personally he had no problems with shooting things although not much personal experience.
I think he wisely has decided to stick with the most believable of the Mitts -- businesman Mitt. The approach to the NRA was get on board with me -- you aren’t going to get a better deal from the other guy and if you enthusiastically help me -- I’ll be your friend.
Although Mittens and everyone else campaigns on jobs and family values (sic) -- victories are assembled through putting together enough special interest voting blocks. Ferret owners of America will once again be very popular.
No matter how much Hillary Rosen is vilified and Ann Romney praised -- the female gender gap won’t close that much.

Honestly, the repugs had a great couple of weeks all at the hands of the dems!
I have been so surprised that the Martin/Zimmerman conflict was more about RACE than GUNS. And Obama and his puny empathy weighs in by saying the young man would have looked like the son he never had. I know the repugs were hoping for another beer summit. Guns kill and the Zimmerman had a PERMIT for a concealed weapon. Make my Day laws with armed citizens. Dems too afraid to take on the gun issue.
Then Ms. Rosen, opens her mouth about a woman with MS who has raised a family and hit the campaign trial. Could her comments be more pitiful? All day yesterday on Faux News they had women panels discussing the remarks. It is eye rolling, head shaking and jaw dropping to me. Self inflicted wounds on the dems.
And to round out the week, the corrupt government of the party in control has shamed the country by sending home 12 secret service agents for making drunken fools of themselves…didn’t they see the GSA video??? A week in Colombia with drugs and hookers. Fuel for the teabagging argument…and they have that GSA video clown as a mascot.
Ms. Rosen is a professional and she should have asked Mrs. Romney to a peace lunch…no wine, coffee or beer, please.
I’m waiting for someone to point out the NRA created the environment that made George Zimmerman think it was ok to shoot someone in a hoodie --it’s been in the news the NRA has a hooded sweatshirt with a concealed weapon pocket….and they put out literature that says if one person is going to end up dead and the other on trial — wouldn’t you rather be the one on trial?
What has Romney said about hooded sweatshirts and the stand your ground law?
I’m not surprised as race helps both parties rally their base and they are very comfortable playing that game. The script is already written.
To me, it is first and foremost about an idiot with a gun. If he had different prejudices the result would have been someone else being dead. But the fact that he was going to get in trouble with his gun was a forgone conclusion. I’ll bet the folks around him knew it.

Last year, we had the gun massacre in Tucson…mental illness, not guns were the problem. Palin and her cross hairs on Congress were quickly removed and forgotten. Palin paid the price…but, it became about mental illness…not guns. I remember those who were packing their legal guns at the event….had to think twice at shooting someone, anyone to save the day.

Well… I’m not going to thrown Hillary Rosen under the bus just because she made her point very clumsily. If you listened to her whole quote and not just the soundbite that’s going around, you get her meaning very clearly. She talked about waitresses and secretaries that worked all day outside the home and then still had to play homemaker and mommy afterwards. She talked about women who don’t have a choice.
Ann Romney seems like a very nice person. I’d bet $100 (sorry, won’t play with $10,000) that she had plenty of help with her housework and raising those boys along the way. That does not make her a bad person. But it does mean she probably doesn’t understand what most mothers today go through.
Yup… the conservatives are making hay at the moment out of Rosen’s comment… but I agree with KGC… it won’t close the gender gap. A poorly worded comment won’t make up for Republicans wanting to pay women less and take away their healthcare no matter how loudly they scream.
The Republican primary has been a night mare for Romney with women voters. With it over I think there will be a closing of the gap maybe close even again if the economy slows. But the convention has all the makings to remind women why they detest the right wing dominated Republican party. So look for Ann to be running around after the convention doing all the “women” talk shows doing damage control.

Jace…in the new economy…discrimination continues — not just gender, but age, race, etc. Ledbetter Act is window dressing from another economic time. It is different in the job search trenches of today. Every application I fill out for a job…I have to give my birth date as I must undergo a credit check, background check, etc. This is before I have to give my body fluids to be checked for drugs. Good grief, when I look at my birth year I am shocked! Makes me want to get high and then it all falls apart!
BTW…winds woke me up today…many tornadoes today.

My post was lost, but here is one more comment on Ms. Rosen. My friend has MS and is now in a wheelchair. She is dem, but was taken aback by Ms. Rosen’s comments. MS is a life diminishing disease and perhaps, Ms Rosen should have considered that. I still think she made a mistake, but I doubt she joins the long list of media types who made statements that ended their careers…Sanchez, Thomas,KO, etc. I know this will not end her career, but just not a good target in Mrs. Romney. And it is sometimes easier to admit a mistake rather than over explaining the comment.

Just to be clear, I was only looking at upper level positions with companies that paid bonuses commensurate with how badly you ran the company.

Xrep…my friend took the comment personally. She had to give-up her career, etc. She can’t get out of bed and stand anymore. So, she empathized with the fact the Mrs. Romney has a challenge everyday and she still is out there ‘working’ and ‘standing-up.’ That has power you can’t ‘intellectualize’ away. As I stated before, Ms. Rosen should have used ‘privilege’ instead of ‘work’ when discussing Ann Romney. That is the issue…then you can state that it is easy for Mrs. Romney because she has the top of the line medical care and $$$ to assist her in raising her family, etc. Most women do not have Mrs. Romney jackpot! It is a struggle she may not know, but she does struggle with an illness.

Melissa Harris Perry tackled the whole Rosen brouhaha this am with the introduction of sanity. Why is it that the GOP the party of “Family Values” who are all up in arms of the abuse of “stay at home” moms who make the “choice” to stay home to care for their children are totally opposed to any program that would make it possible for women of lesser income to make the same “choice”? Just looking at family leave policies alone, women in this country are horribly disadvantaged compared to women (and men) in other developed nations.
We’re not going to get rid of mentally ill people. We’re not going to get rid of angry..bored people. But guns..how about a little control there?

Sadly we live in an age when all evidence is anecdotal.
Rosen mis-spoke which all of us are apt to do. I am sure that Mrs. Romney has had struggles in her life, every parent does, and battling MS in the bargain would be a load for anyone.
A student of my wife’s, a 15 year old boy, has recently been diagnosed with leukemia. This will be a struggle for the family both emotionally and financially.Yes they have insurance and thank God they do. Unfortunately most of the treatments will be administered some distance away. This will involve time off from work, motel and travel expenses, plus all the little odds and ends that insurance does not cover.
Like any parents they will do what ever is necessary to take care of their son. Who wouldn’t?
All that aside, while they try to love and support their son they will be forced to deal on a daily basis of how they will pay for all that is needed.
It is simply not possible for people of great means to fully comprehend that reality.
That Rosen mis-spoke is too bad, because her point was incredibly valid. The Ryans, and Romneys of the world are clueless about the stresses and struggles of many Americans. Their positions on issues such as health care and taxes, and government services in general, are a black and white testament to their lack of understanding, and empathy.
Rosen knew where she was going, she just didn’t know how to get there.

I understand that matters of the heart are writ in a different language than matters of the head.
I also agree that Rosen’s criticism was not well thought through. The heart of Rosen’s criticism was that unlike most American women, Mrs romney has no experience of struggling to make ends meet. The words Rosen wrote conveyed something else.
Rosen is still a decent and smart person. I mean, it’s not like she let osama bin ladin escape, or got so drunk that she mistook her pal for a pheasant, or gushed about how she enjoys firing people.
The worst I’ve had is a guy who was in a shoot em out with the police. He had just allegedly killed his girl friend and the cops filled him with 5 bullet holes. Unfortunately..he survived. He also slit his own neck. He was unsuccessful there also.
After surgery and about a day in ICU the hospital that had him called and told us to pick him up. They said to call about 30 minutes before we arrived so they could extubate him. My joint called me and I cried.
We had him set up in one of our waiting rooms since we don’t even have an infirmary. He’s all better and ready to stand trial.

when I worked at the youth detention we had a 15 year old who was in a gang shootout, he was running away bent over the bullet entered his lower back went up through his body and was stopped by one of his jaw teeth. a 1/2 inch in any direction may have killed him. Did he learn anything?
Not a bit, the sad think is he was a smart person but his mother was constatly trying to get him to be released, from what the other kids said it was so he could come home and keep selling drugs. She missed the money.

There are many people with problems who struggle every day. They get up in the morning get ready get in their wheel chair, strap on their oxygen bottle or what ever it takes to get them through the day and go to work. I see them all the time and yes it is struggle for them. They don’t call their struggle work,they call it life.
The same for all the mothers out there that get them and their kids ready for daycare/school/grandmas and then go to work.
It is “work” and we all know what it means and anybody trying to twist it into something else is peddling 100% pure bullshit and are being dishonest.
As far as I know Ann Romney has never worked a day in her life.

Of course they don’t mention “where does the money come from”? If you subtracted the SS payments from the SS & Medicare expenses, you would see the the US government has been stealing from the boomers for 40 years to cover all those other “expenses” and it is only now that we are at the break even and going down point that they want to cut benefits.
jamie, that’s why i tho’t it strange and noteworthy that there’s been no discussion on ar’s comment “And I think all of us need to know that we need to respect choices that women make” -- especially by those on either side of the reproductive choice argument.
XR..I couldn’t find anyone to take my place. I tried. And that was on call 24/7/365. I didn’t have to go in after hours..most of the time..but I had to evaluate new intakes and prescribe what meds they needed. The holidays..and weekends were worse as far as calls go. One month I had 14 hours of calls at 3+ minutes a piece.
I finally had to say..enough is enough. I get 20 vac days a year but when I asked..no one responded. I didn’t have the heart to just walk. Now I do because.. my heart is worn out. Yes..I’m an idiot!

My old pickup had a spot on the arm rest that would hold change. The only problem was that you had to slam the door hard and in doing so some of the change would fly out.
There was an old woman in the neighborhood who did a morning walk, as she did she picked up cans and checked all the pay phones for returned coins. She soon learned to take a detour off the sidewalk and walked passed the drivers side of the old truck to scoop up what ever had fallen out the night before.
Now that was change she could believe in.

How fortunate to know how she passed and to be with her. It makes me cry to think of your pain and joy of a tremendous life.

Pat, “Peace in the Valley” is the perfect song for the occasion, because Mom was in these last days tired and so weary and ready to go home--and she didn’t mean with me.
I’ve had another song running through my heart all PM, too. Mom sang, always, from her childhood until the ravages of COPD stole her big rich stunning beautiful alto from her. She sang to me in the womb, in my childhood; we sang duets together around the house.
So this song has special resonance for me--Mom was pretty much that rarity, an angel on earth--so the beginning of the song says it all. Whisperin’ Bill recorded this in 1962:
