So much is made of Republicans losing the female vote we sometimes forget to talk about Democrats losing the male vote.

“Romney’s best hope, in my opinion, would be a return to the 2004 George W Bush gender coalition: a small deficit among women and an 11-point victory among men.” — Harry J Enten, The Guardian

“During the past six months, the more dramatic change in presidential preference has been among men, not women. In October, Gallup’s national poll found that Obama led Romney by 14 points among women (54 percent to 40 percent). That margin shrunk only slightly, to 12 points, in March. But among men, Romney’s 16-point advantage in October shrunk to just 3 points in March.” — Stuart Rothenberg, Roll Call

Woo Hoo People with gender hate willard.

  2. pogo says:

    Woo?

The gender gap only has significance if it is normalized by voter participation in states that matter. To be really useful, it should measure those gaps among independent voters in swing states. Dem women will vote for Obama, as will Dem men. Rep women will vote for Romney, as will Rep men. My sense is that the gap may exist mostly in the middle, but that’s speculation.

  3. pogo says:

Rats. Congrats XR (I guess I got too windy to claim the Hoo).

  4. xrepublican says:

Harry Enten must think it’s possible for willard to return to 2004.

Why not go back to 1904 ? America didn’t let women vote back then.

  5. pogo says:

Show me the numbers among indies in Colorado, Florida, MI and PA and I’ll show you the next president of the You-nited States.

“Despite all this admixture, many Latin Americans will claim they are “pure” Spanish.” particularly in New Mexico, at least from my memory of 50 years ago. My stepmother’s mother was very adamant that she was Spanish NOT Mexican. It really was the difference between Black and White and a rather intense prejudice that may or may not have eased in the last couple of generations.

  7. pogo says:

According to Wiki, the successful candidates in 2000 & 2004 were GWB with popular vote margins of -.51% and 2.46%. In 2008, Obama had a Pop vote margin of 7.27%. GG ain’t a good predictor when looked at on so broad a scale, and in fact appears to be an inverse predictor that predicts that the Dem candidate will lose if the GG is large.

  8. xrepublican says:

Pogo’s 10:49 describes the real world. If the gender and singles gaps hold up in the swing states, willard’s campaign is doomed, and $1B!LL!ON in rip up lican money will have been flushed down the electoral toilet.

However, if the gender and singles gaps are largest in the traditionally ‘leaning puguglican states’, we could see a McGovern or Mondale style defeat.

SC and WV suffered pretty badly from bushinomics, and even these ‘solid ripper’ states could turn on willie.

  10. Pogo, in Gallup’s swing state survey of independents Obama has a one-point advantage among independent men and a 14-point advantage among independent women. The big shift among men not getting much discussion — Romney led them by 11 points a few months ago. Seems to me that if he regains the independent men he had until recently (much easier task for him than closing the female gap) he’s at least back to the tie he once had in swing states.

  11. We’re a bit glitchy this morning. IT on the case.

  12. Pogo says: To be really useful, it should measure those gaps among independent voters in swing states.

Pogo, I added that chart at the end of today’s post above

  13. Pogo says: GG ain’t a good predictor when looked at on so broad a scale

Agree, the point i’m driving today is that we should also pay attention to the male gap, that’s the biggest difference in Dem 2008 victory over 2004, at least in gender terms. Dems had roughly the same lead among women in 04 and 08 but Obama turned Gore’s 11 point defict among men into a 1 pt lead

Guess I’m just saying Democrats should not get overconfident with these big leads among women, and make sure it’s not offset by losing men in the double digits

  14. RebelliousRenee says:

    Craig…
this election is getting so mind numbingly boring that I’m having a hard time to pay attention. And I am a political junkie. I can only imagine what the average person would think trying to give a damn about all those statistics.

CBob… your enthusiasm is a wonderful thing to read… thanks for sharing.

  15. ha, RR, we’ll put you down as no fire in the belly. I go back and forth, but I always find prez campaigns interesting for studying voters even if the cands a snore.

Why this persistent gender gap for instance. No matter how you slice and dice the numbers as we did this morning, we know one thing: It really does exist. As KGC brought up yesterday, What’s different about men and women and the two parties that explains it?

  16. Flatus says:

    Ponder this:

--Are republican women more compliant than Democratic women in responding favorably to their spouses urging of a specific candidate as being the ‘right’ candidate for their family?

--Are republican men more compliant than Democratic men in responding favorably to their spouses urging of a specific candidate as being the ‘right’ candidate for their family?

  17. Blonde Wino says:

For all the media bromance for Obama in 2008, I am sure he will try to get those male legs tingling again.

  19. pogo says:

Now yer talkin’ poobah. Those numbers start to say something about what the candidates ought to be considering. I expect to see Willard doing swing state tours, telling wonderfully engaging stories about his lovely wife, mother of his children and the idyllic life she helped him create at Chez Romney.

  20. whskyjack says:

You might want to book mark this site good number from BLS

    http://www.bls.gov/cps/tables.htm#History_m

Turns out I’m right Jamie’s right and Romney is right. Up to a point
Numbers measure something, you just gotta make sure that the numbers are really measuring the something being claimed. Also in the case of Romney (and other politician/ fact spinners) make sure the claims and the unsaid implications are the same. In other words watch out for the bait and switch.

for the boys, maybe it still boils down to who would you rather have a beer with. the stereotypical male at the turn of this century seemed to prefer a shrub over a technerd and again over a yachtsman. but will that same male want to be seen hefting a brew with a mitt or a barry? which of those two would be chosen to h.o.r.s.e. around at the basket, discuss drones and seals with, or empathize and id with the shoulder brush gesture?

    Jack

  24. xrepublican says:

If the Dems keep hammering Slick Willard about firing Americans and liking to fire Americans, the male gap will continue to expand. That ‘liking to fire’ is absolute gold for oh,bummer’s campaign.

Dems should find some poster boys, who were formerly willard employees. I mean, get real people to tell how they felt about losing their livelihood, and worse, losing it to a commie. What’s taking so long???

Now that willard’s the one, Dems should define him early so that the ripper convention creates a drop rather than a bounce.

If oh,bummer rides a huge lead in the polls, every Dem candidate will find him useful, and he’ll have coat tails.

But they’d better get going, cuz one of these days, willard might figure out how to campaign for prez.

  25. xrepublican says:

Ya, he’s a sick willard, too.

  27. Now that the Secret Service is going to investigate Draft Dodging Ted Nugent’s remarks about being dead or in jail if President Obama is re elected he claims he is a non violent person.

The fact that he made those remarks at the NRA shindig to a bunch of gun nuts who support him is no different than Charles Manson’s talks to his followers who murdered Sharon Tate and others.

Charles Manson says its not his fault that they went out and committed the murders they did, but in fact it was his rhetoric that lead to those deaths.

If you put Nugent and Manson together you would not be able to tell them apart.

    Ted Nugent = Charles Manson

Two of a kind and probably have the same DNA.

    Have a great day.

  28. Would it not be funny as hell if Nugent was sitting in a restaurant and someone there stood up, pointed at him and yelled.

    Look there’s Charles Manson!!!!

    Have a great day.

And Pew shows Obama with a 4% edge.

    http://pewresearch.org/pubs/2246/mitt-romney-barack-obama-jobs-swing-voters-gop-primaries-gender-gap

It looks to be developing into the close race many of us thought it might be. My first prediction from last fall proved out -- Romney for the R candidate. My next is O by a whisker in November.

  30. whskyjack says:

Xrep, keep hoping but this election is going to be about Obama not Romney. Romney doesn’t have to be the best of the two just good enough so that folks feel comfortable giving Obama the boot.

  31. pogo says:

And PPP shows O with a 5 point lead in FL. Now we’re starting to see the swing state polls kick in.

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/

So let’s see PA, OH, CO, VA, MI, WI now that it’s a 2 guy race to see where the two start.

  33. Two students that went to the High School my daughter went to were found murdered the other day. Their bodies were set on fire and just today were identified.

They are still looking for clues and trying to find out what occurred and why they were killed. They also have another spot close to where the bodies were found that also had signs of a fire being set.

Also the Judge in the Trayvon Martin case recused herself and a new Judge will take her place. Information that has been released say that Zimmerman will still have a bond hearing on Friday.

That’s it for the local news from my area at this time.

    Have a great day.

  34. pogo says:

I think this will be about Obama, jack -- second term elections do tend to be referenda on the sitting POTUS -- but I don’t think the rest of your thought is right. I have to believe that when people who don’t have a kneejerk partisan vote reflex go into the booth or sit down at the monitor or whatever they do to vote for POTUS, I think they choose the one they think is the better of the two. At least I hope that’s what they do. Willard has taken at least two sides on just about every issue, so that won’t narrow it down much, and Obama creams him in the likability polls. If it comes down to a beer, Willard doesn’t drink, right? I say O by a whisker.

  35. As to today’s topic there was a episode on Numbers were the voting machines were used to flip an election. The way it was done was in the BIOS of the motherboard.

Like instructions of how to put together a bike or any item where their are instruction to assemble the item purchased the motherboard instruction built in the BIOS would tell it where and when a vote was to be changed, thereby changing the results to favor whomever it was programed for to win.

We need to be extra vigilant in November where Touch Screen Voting Machines are used and provide no paper trail to confirm the the vote tally’s are accurate.

By disenfranchising so many voters who would vote for the Democratic Candidate and flipping votes through these corrupt voting machines they just may steal the election this year.

We need independent observers at all the polls where Touch Screen Machines are being used to ensure a honest vote and election.

    Have a great day.

  36. Here’s a good one.

You could almost be sorry for Allen West’s mental illness if he didn’t keep saying such crazy things.

    Woodrow Wilson Was a Communist

  38. pogo says:

Jack, yeah the Pew report is interesting. O takes the lead on the economy, R on the deficit. So left leaning go O and right leaning go R (no surprise there).

So this will be the first big SuperPac election. I just hope the indie voters can winnow the chaff from the wheat -- assuming there’s any wheat left after the winnowing begins.

  39. Jamie…

If IRC under the Articles Of War, the Geneva Conventions and our Laws on Torture Allen West is a War Criminal.

He was kicked out of the Military for putting a gun next to a prisoners head and pulling the trigger. I also believe that he threatened to kill the prisoner as well.

His Court Martial should have been for War Crimes and he should be sitting in the brig for many years. Instead he was kicked out and allowed to keep his benefits instead of losing them.

So its no wonder that he’s a Republican Fascist Nazi and a member of the Party Of Death.

    Have a great day.

  40. Coreen says:

Gallup provides similar data with regard to their daily general election tracking poll, which today has Romney at 48% and Obama at 44%

Gallup concludes that “Obama’s political strength is among Americans who are not white, who are not married, who are not religious and who are young”…

and suggests 2 groups of voters based on their recent polling…

Married, weekly-church-attending whites: 17% for Obama; 73% for Romney

    Non married, seldom/never church attending, non-whites: 85% for Obama, 8% for Romney…

Setting up for a very close election indeed…

    http://pollingmatters.gallup.com/2012/04/obamas-demographic-strengths-non-white.html

  41. pogo says:

Now THAT”S the AP we all know and love… Wink

Since the economy is supposed to be O’s great weak point, if the Pew poll is actually somewhat reflective of voter attitudes about the two candidates, (1) R’s camp has to be very concerned, (2) we’ll see Superpac ads flooding the airwaves trying to conflate the economy and deficit or (3) both 1 & 2.

I loved Stewart’s bit last night on how $335 Million for Planned Parenthood was a lot of money but $426 Billion from increased taxes proposed by O on millionaire earners was insignificant. Some of the best and brightest stars in the Repug galaxy were spouting that claptrap -- e.g. Jeff Sessions….LOL

  42. Robert says:

Why would women support Romney when his wife get to stay at home but Mitt tells them to go to work if they’re on financial assistance.

  43. pogo says:

Coreen, over at RealClearPolitics you can muck about and find battleground state polls on the left hand banner of the Latest Election Polls page -- all this demographic dissection is well and good, but in the end it boils down to majority votes in a handful of states. Most of the polls that are over there are a little old -- like, say, late March, so they predate the Santorum surrender, but the Romney v. Obama polls should be encouraging to O and the boys from Chi town if their current margins hold (they won’t).

  44. Robert says:

Coreen, do you know what about people who attend synagogue? Are they counted as church going or a seperate Jewish vote category?

  45. pogo says:

Robert, you’re not the first person to note that discrepancy should not be a vote getter for Romney. (Poor) mothers need to know the dignity of work…we should celebrate the choices (rich) mothers make. Right, Mitt, got it.

  46. jaslf says:

I think it is far too early to tell how people will vote. Unfortunately, women will forget about the deplorable War Against Women waged by the Republicans. All that will be on the minds of voters is whether they and their neighborhoods are suffering.

I found the polling with Condoleeza Rice as a Republican vice-presidential running mate to be really intriguing. If I am right about the minds of the voters that I just mentioned, such a ticket would actually spice up this election.

Anon -- I am sorry to hear that story about those deaths. There is nothing more terrifying than seeing a tragic event come close enough to one’s family.

  47. Coreen says:

Agree Pogo, it is much to early to know which way any person will vote, but interesting that just a couple of weeks ago it was suggested by some in the media that Romney would prove to be a weak candidate which may not be the case, as the more recent data suggests…

  48. Coreen says:

You would have to ask that of Gallup Robert…it did not say ‘christian’ church goers…so have no idea whether he was including those who attend synagogue with church goers…

  49. Tonyb says:

I personally don’t know a sole who has been helped by it but i’m sure there’s people who have been.. Why are they not trotted out and made an example of?? Why aren’t the Republican’s offering an alternative to the “Obamacare” they seek to overturn? Maybe Obama re-elect is just holding back to make their case on the President’s “greatest achievement”?

    Hi Dogd,
You didn’t offend but thanks..Everyone has their likes and dislikes, cool..I have no disagreement regarding President Clinton’s terrible repeal of Glass-Steigall or his Nafta horror deal for that matter..Where were we all 10 years ago in opposition?? What about the opposition to Nafta, my UAW disagreed, where was the majority of Americans, the press?? Still unions support Dems totally..The bigger picture with President Clinton (IMO) is overall he was a great President..I wasn’t following Taylor 10 years ago but i don’t think she was even writing politically then, no blogs? I simply don’t believe that because we fail to take the correct stands in the past means that we shouldn’t try to hold this president or future President’s feet to the fire..

When he knocked Hillary I was going to tell him not to go there but then saw your response and let it slide.

I should not have done that. I was going to say that most here are big Hillary supporters and the reason there are few if any Obama supporters is because they left during the battle of the 2008 election.

Yes I still support Obama, but I do not want to cause or be the cause of any hard feelings within the TM family.

Hillary is doing a great job as Secretary Of State and I truly believe that she is not only more valuable in the job she has, but is happy in it.

They also said earlier that they were well like by everyone, but it seems that they also hung out with a bad group.

What a waste of two lives. They stated that both were shot and burned but not sure if it was where they were found or at the other site were they had burn evidence of another fire.

Well Tony..at least from one job. And the correctional supervisor over medical at the joint had the nerve to be mad at me for taking off two weeks…after 7 years. When I left there..if he had any hair..it would have been standing up.

  92. I happened to check another site before shutting down and found this on the Gulf Seafood and the BP Oil Rig blowup in the Gulf.

I had read it earlier and forgot about it, but it is well worth the read.

I have previously said that I do not eat seafood and if I did I would not eat any seafood coming out of the Gulf after BP dumped thousands of gallons of poison into the water to break up the oil.

After reading this you might have second thoughts as to rather or not you would want to eat anything out of the Gulf waters as well.

Okay gang off for the night for real this time. Have a great evening.

In reference to equal pay. I remember back to shortly after I started teaching at the university here. All of a sudden I was involved in this OEO investigation. They were comparing my salary with a newer younger guy who just started teaching. He was being paid so much more than I was. I can’t remember all the details because it was so long ago that it might have been a previous lifetime. I was green around the gills. I didn’t start the investigation.

I had a master’s degree and he had no advanced ed past his BS in nursing. I think I even taught the guy.

When it was all over..I got a raise. Thanks to whoever.

  94. ct says:

Do I have to read it AP? I live down here but I’ll have to admit that the last shrimp I ate tasted funny. It was not fresh shrimp and might have been from that area. I think that my side of the state didn’t get as much of that poison..and if it is inland shrimp..maybe it’s OK. The water usually moves out to the Gulf.

  95. ct says:

I will have to start getting only fresh shrimp and checking for both eyes. No eyes..no eat.

  96. ct…

It’s really hard to get off line and I stopped back to see if anyone had left any comments.

Yes, you should read it even though you live down here. Another whale washed up on the beach today. It’s the second one in a month and this type of whale is usually out in water 1000 feet deep.

Also there have been many dolphins washing up as well to die or already dead. BP has poisoned the Gulf waters and nothing can be considered safe to eat that comes out of the waters here.

Just like the Exxon tanker in Alaska which happened over four years ago is just now showing a lot of effects it had on the waters there. It is only two years on the BP spill and the effects are showing already. That’s how bad I believe it is.

We are being told that there is nothing wrong with any seafood since the spill, but I bet that soon we will be seeing a lot of people coming down with all kinds of illnesses that have not been seen before.

Remember that we poisoned our troops in Vietnam when we used Agent Orange to defoliate the jungles and our troops were exposed to it. Look at all the illnesses that they had and how the Government even today denies that those soldiers ills came from Agent Orange.

Better to get fresh water fish or fish from the west coast than to even think that the fish in the Gulf are safe to eat.

Okay, that’s it. I need to get up early tomorrow so goodnight all.

But something strange I noticed after that Corexit was sprayed out in the gulf. My river..which varies from stained to muddy..was strangely clear. Stayed that way for a good while..actually until just recently. I’ve have never seen it that way. I wondered if that chemical could have had anything to do with it. I’m about 60-70 miles..as the crow flies..from the gulf. Lot farther by water.

I asked one of my neighbors but he’d only notice if his beer was clearer than it used to be.

I never eat anything with more than four legs or less than two. 3 legged chickens are fine. 3 legged snakes are not.

  99. xrepublican says:

    CT,

Does your neighbor make his own beer ?

  100. Oh, one more cow for Craig…before I hit the hay.

    CT…

Remember the Gulf Stream currents come out of the Gulf and go up the coast. So yes you may not be as safe eating seafood from here since the poisons were carried in the Gulf Stream.

    Goodnight.

  101. ct says:

    Nite.

  102. ct…

Corexit is banned in the European Waters and considered unsafe for use there. What do they know that our Government is not telling us? Think about it for a while and consider the consequences if the truth was told to us.

  103. xrepublican says:

If we had a code word such as, “Check Please !” that would alert our Trail Elf of the possible presence of a troll, then the Elf could unobtrusively look into his/her Crystal Ball to check the IP address. The Trail Elf could then cast the appropriate magic spell, and announce, “All Clear On The Trail”.

    Just a thought.

  104. ct says:

That’s not the only thing we don’t know the truth about. We can’t handle the truth! Really.

  105. ct says:

Seems like I thought that someone here did send out a little hint. May have been Flatus. Can’t remember. I sensed that several here were a little suspicious.

  106. ct says:

This is the MO. Starts with a compliment to Craig. In the same paragraph..there’s a snide comment to the rest of us. It works up to a hit on Tony and Taylor..and the big finale is to go after C-Bob.

I guess now he’ll have to change that.

I could see BHO doing the same thing to willard, and slick willie replying,as he has in the past, that his name is mitt. Next, I could see the Prez demand that willard produce his birth certificate.
