Hardly backing off from her recent unsubstantiated claims about Muslim infiltration of American society, Michelle Bachmann has now made up stuff about a fellow Minnesota member of Congress, Keith Ellison.
She falsely accused the Muslim lawmaker of terrorist ties. “He has a long record of being associated with [the Council on American–Islamic Relations] and with the Muslim Brotherhood,” Bachmann said during an interview on Glenn Beck’s radio show.
Ellison: “I am not now, nor have I ever been, associated with the Muslim Brotherhood.”
House Speaker John Boehner: “I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous.”
Dangerous enough, Mr. Speaker, to remove Bachmann from her seat on the House Intelligence Committee? He says not. Think again, Mister. You’ve got a lunatic on your hands.
And by the way, Mitt Romney, give her a speaking gig at your convention at your peril!

Last night’s top story on NBC Nightly News reminded me of the one on HPV vaccines triggered by Bachmann during the debates. NBC topped the news, and kept the story going, to defend the safety of the vaccine.
Last night, with everything that is going on in the world, their top story was the importance of getting vaccinated for whopping cough.
Merck, manufacturers of the vaccine, has ties to NBC-Universal; see, also, their board members.
Bachmann and NBC both remind me of the lyrics in an Adam Ant song…”crackpot history and the right to lie.”
Neither probably needs to sound the alarm about the goings-on of members of the actual Muslim Brotherhood; I’m sure the CIA, FBI, Homeland Security, or someone, is keeping tabs on them.

As a line for the rule on statements, I would say it is best to concentrate on “actions” as opposed to “beliefs”. Some beliefs may strike you has fanciful or humorous, but injuring or being prejudiced against someone for believing them is not okay.
Now if their “actions” in the name of those beliefs has a negative affect on others or society, then those are fair game. I don’t care if someone always wants to wear special underwear. If their money goes to support Prop 8 to hurt other non believers, then that is open for attack.

If she was questioning a theology that permits the denigration of others I have no problem with that either
So why was she going after the Mormon? She was attacking Ellison because she could and because in her mind he is a vulnerable target after all any Muslim is a bad muslim…and I would be interested to hear Congresswoman’s Bachman’s views on mormonism
And while the insults and charges may have been more colorful in the past I think the overall level of civility was probably higher and the interest in getting something done rather than obstruction was also better

While I do believe “you people” was an arrogant statement, I didn’t take it as quite the lady of the manor addressing the serfs. To me it sounded like resentment about what she considers an intrusive press prying into her family.
For all of her “sweetness and light” image, Ann has a reputation for being an attack dog when it concerns her sons, husband, or family and I think it was that aspect of her character putting in an appearance.
Jamie you may be correct, but Ann(toinette) better toughen-up about the taxes. It was more about her dismissive attitude about full disclosure and a view into their lives. It won’t get any easier in the White House.

what i found really interesting about Ann vid Purple posted is she says they’re not releasing taxes because “there are so many things that will be open again for more attack. You just want to get more material for more attack.” How dumb, basically admitting there’s something in the tax returns they’re hiding. (Also, note that she says “you” in that 2d sentence, which was right before the “you people” line, so no question that’s what she said, for what it’s worth)
One item of interest that came out yesterday was the story of the illegal tax shelter used by Marriott while Romney was on the board audit committee. This was one shelter that got found out, but you have to ask how many such probably “legal” shelters are buried within the Romney tax filings.

As often and I whine and moan about Fox political coverage, it is only fair that today they are doing an excellent job (so far) on the coverage of the Aurora shooting. They are going with absolute straight forward reporting with little speculation or emotionalism. CNN is sloppy with bathos and MSNBC is reporting well but concentrating on the political angles.
Romney did well with his public statement and reflected his past as a Stake President.
So while I’m in no way on either the FOX or Romney bandwagons -- kudos for doing things right.

Why would ABC protect Ann Romney? Recently read Dan Rather’s Rather Outspoken. In it, he tells of Sumner Redstone’s support for Baby Bush…because a Republican presidency would be better for CBS than a Democratic presidency. I don’t have to stretch very far to believe the same bias of almost all tellvision news outlets. After all, they are all small pieces of very big businesses these days.
Rather’s weekly program is really quite good.
Watching the American political scene is just like watching a soap opera. You can miss three weeks and pick up just where you left off.
When I last checked in on July 2, Michelle Bachmann was stupid. I have returned nearly three weeks later to find that she is still stupid. Really nothing has changed. Perhaps I was expecting too much.
Next time I am going to watch the commercials for Tide.

I was lamenting the other day when my brother and I tried to have lunch at our favorite restaurant in Mesilla — El Comedor. It was shut down, permanently closed. Another fine restaurant done in by the economy. Instead fine quality fast food establishments, like Burger King, thrive — where they not only stand by their food, but also in it!

As a society we have reached the point where it is necessary to feed a huge mass of people as cheaply as possible. The cost to produce “individual” food made to order at a cost affordable to the average person is almost gone. We are now faced with two types of dining: National and global chains or specialty high end outrageously priced venues for the wealthy.
If people do not have the time to go out once a week or the funds for a family to do so, then these family owned and operated restaurants with high operational costs are going to go by the wayside. Of course part of it is advertising. Too many people have lost the ability to “cook” cheaply at home or don’t have the time to do so with everyone in the family working. That requires a whole change in life style.
Some people are fighting back with the local foods and farmers markets, but you still have to go get it and cook it, have the land to grow it, people to do the farming (really hard work as a family) etc. What used to be normal has been lost to the fine dining at McDonalds

A large part of the country is in the grip of a severe drought. Not surprisingly many of the affected areas are home to the notorious ‘value voter’ backed up with tea party tendencies. After they have voted God, guns, and gays, and an end to big bad government, they will secretly head to the nearest government agency, and begin requesting payments from the their federally subsidized crop insurance.( a form of single payer public option insurance available to only one select segment of society, which is operated through private insurance companies, and which you will almost certainly be required to buy). They will begin to receive crop deficiency payments through USDA ASCS programs for crops subsidized from the outset by big bad government. They will seek low interest loans for livestock feed assistance, and payment waivers for existing government loans. Finally they will seek government cost share for drought mitigation programs and irrigation projects that would be far too costly too install privately. They will also seek to take advantage of low interest loans for businesses adversely affected by the economic conditions, again made possible by big bad government. (BBG)
Upon electing the party of God guns and gays, they will find much to their utter amazement that these value candidates and politicians really don’t like them or their Farm Bill or most programs designed to help rural America. They will be forced to go running hat in hand like a share cropper who is a bit short this year, to the last democrat left standing to try and salvage their big, bad, government programs. What a joke.
Have just spent the better part of three weeks among these folks, and believe me they are struggling, believe me also when I say that they will vote God, guns and gays come November.

What gets me are the small businesses who join The US Chamber of Commerce who has absolutely no interest in anything but major US and global corporations. Everything on their lobby list is designed to screw over the individual business owner and yet the message they push is the total opposite. That puts those small businesses right up their with the family farmer voting against their own best interests because of a totally false political message.
