Wall of Gale Crater

NASA Mars Science Laboratory — “This color image from NASA’s Curiosity rover shows part of the wall of Gale Crater, the location on Mars where the rover landed. Here, a network of valleys believed to have formed by water erosion enters Gale Crater from the outside. This is the first view scientists have had of a fluvial system – one relating to a river or stream — from the surface of Mars. Known and studied since the 1970s beginning with NASA’s Viking missions, such networks date from a period in Martian history when water flowed freely across the surface. The main channel deposit seen here resembles a dirt road ascending into the mountains, which are actually the north wall and rim of Gale Crater. The image provides new insights into the style of sediment transport within this system.”

I don’t see any cattle skulls, so the water must be okay.

    Craig…
I think this Mars stuff is so much more fascinating than politics. It’s something positive and shows what can be achieved when intelligent people work together. It’s kinda like the Anti-Congress mentality.

  3. xrepublican says:

I wonder how the fishin’ is down there today.

Flatus, we had a 30 qt. SS pot that used to sterilize the beer bottles that we would also use to bring water to a rolling boil and fill each coke container with the hot water, put the lids on the containers and let them sit for about 5 minutes before we’d put the beer fixin’s in them. We’d do that twice. I think that after we made the stuff and emptied the beer into the bottles we would do the same, maybe with a little clorox in the water for the first rinse. Biggest source of contamination was probably the hoses we connected the tanks with -- we never found a good way to clean and sterilize them other than dropping them into the boiling water. Because of the fittings I doubt they really got clean. Probably wasn’t completely sterile but I could never tell that whatever beasties survived affected the beer. I think it was probably a cleaner system than most home systems. It was a labor intensive exercise that would yield about 2 1/2 cases each time, but it was really as much an excuse to get together and drink as anything.

  5. xrepublican says:

    I s’pose it’s just shore fishing.

  6. xrepublican says:

Say, Craig, I just had an idea.

How about we team up with Richard Branson and start a Martian resort, with an fish camp way out in the wilds ?

  7. xrepublican says:

We could brew and sell Martian beer up there with no Federal, State, or Local taxes !

The rip ups would love it.

  8. Jamie says:

Wonder what the Martian version of the “revenooer” would look like and do we shoot to get their attention?

  9. Couldn’t have said it better RR, exactly how I feel.

Xrepub, the minute they find water let’s go. Wouldn’t be much of a fish camp without it

  10. pogo says:

From what I can tell I guess that dry flies are the appropriate lures?

Are dry flies lures? I’m not a fisherman, so don’t know if I’m using the appropriate word.

  11. pogo says:

I always loved Copperhead Road. Until now I had no idea what Steve Earle looked like.

  12. xrepublican says:

Pogo, the old rule was, if you dropped it, and it went shhh, it was a fly’

If you dropped it and it went clunk or clang, then it was a lure.

These new-fangled rubber worms, crawdads, and fish don’t make much noise when you drop ‘em, but they’re lures nonetheless.

  13. xrepublican says:

If Branson isn’t interested, maybe CBob would be willing to start a collection to fund the thing.

  14. pogo says:

Thanks xr -- don’t like to misname things if I can avoid it.

  15. speaking of CBob, hey bud i sent you new login info, saw you were having trouble. your old screen name, coloradobob, is active. let me know if you need help

  16. pogo says:

Mars could be fun without the water -- by acting as if it was there where it used to be (or where it was once believed to be). There could be fishing trips (dry flies only -- and waders optional); gondola rides and canal boat cruises in the canals that Schiaperelli and Lowell saw (that don’t actually exist but that they saw anyway); and if the architects of the canals that weren’t there are still around, lecture tours.

Romney assured reporters in South Carolina that he never paid less than a 13 percent tax rate during the 10 years for which he will not release tax returns. He also said he doesn’t see what the big deal is.

“The fascination with taxes I’ve paid I find to be very small-minded compared to the broad issues we face,” he said. “But I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past 10 years I never paid less than 13 percent. I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that.”

Romney didn’t specify whether he was referring solely to federal income taxes. A 13 percent federal tax rate — presumably mostly from taxes on capital gains — puts him at a much lower rate than most average Americans pay on their salary and wage income. In the past, Romney has said he pays around 15 percent in taxes, which is the rate on capital gains.

In 1991, the average CEO took in $2.6 million in total compensation. By 2011, that number had risen to $9 million. What you probably don’t know is that this rise occurred in spite of changes in the tax code meant to stop it.

In 1993, Bill Clinton signed into law his first budget, which created section 162(m) of the Internal Revenue Code. The provision stated that companies could only deduct the first $1 million of compensation for their top five (later top four after changes by Bush’s SEC) executives from their corporate taxes. The idea was to discourage companies from paying in excess of $1 million, as any additional compensation would be taxed. So why didn’t it work?

Pat, there are more tax gizmos than Carters has pills. Not sure about the employer side, (and a lot of speculation is being applied her) but I’m betting that the $1M only applies to salary paid and not to deferred comp, stock, stock options, etc. awarded in lieu of comp. As for the employees side, deferred comp is not taxed until received and if the comp is in the form of stock options -- the transactions are not taxed until they are exercised and the income is realized. IRS has used constructive receipt with spotty results.

  22. Jamie says:

If I were to put in some sort of rule on regulation it would be about sitting on boards and voting compensation. For decades now there has been a cross pollinating system where Joe is on John’s board and votes John a big salary. John is on Bob’s board and votes Bob a big salary. Bob is on Joe’s board and if he and John are getting big money then Joe deserves it too, and of course Joe then passes on another raise to John. All other companies look at the “average” CEO compensation and match it in order to attract the best “candidates” for the corporation.

This incestuous system of compensation has exploded CEO salaries. Not quite sure how to get it under control unless some sort of limit bases on COLA for area of residence, or vote by shareholders before salary can take effect. There has to be a solution for ending the greed.

I feel so proud when I see these pictures. This is truly one of the major accomplishments of our lifetimes. You simply cannot look at this and not be proud to be an AMERICAN!!!!

I wish that our Gov’t (regardless of which administration) did a better job of highlighting successes like this. It can serve as a reminder that sometimes……just sometimes our convoluted, inefficient, bloated system can still produce successes unmatched by any other known to man.

Bravo NASA and to all who work on these endeavours!!!!

The GOP is in a panic. They are losing middle class voters.
Their only hope? Voter suppression. If it works, you can kiss democracy goodbye.

So far, it looks like it’s going to work.

And don’t expect “No drama Obama” to do anything about it. He’s so afraid of being called a “liberal” that he’s out there giving his usual calm, rational speeches about having better “economic policies,” while the GOP steals the election.

  36. On $Rmoney’s Tax Returns and the 13.6% he stated, before a campaign spokesperson said he meant 13.9% rate may not in fact be a lie.

What it the % we all pay for Social Security and Medicare? Is it not 13.6% IIRC?

If that is the case since he does not say he paid Federal Income Tax than in fact he paid no Income Taxes or very little, which would in fact be less than 10%.

    Have a great evening.

  37. Also forgot to mention above that $Rmoney had Ryan amend his Tax Returns to show from $1 to $5 million dollars that he failed to list on his Tax Returns.

    Have a great evening.

    CORRECTION:
It was Ryan’s financial disclosure in the house that was amended. Here’s the two links on this story below, one from the Daily Koz and the other from USA Today.

My regimen for keeping things sterile was parallel to yours. But, I was using peroxide rather than chlorine as the final disinfectant. Mr Amiratti, my HS chemistry teacher, would have been proud of me. He was a gunner on B-17s flying out of England. A fine man.
