Nearly a half million homeless Haitians face Isaac in 24 hours, but you’d never know it as the media and Republicans fret about the storm’s threat to the party’s national convention next week.

Indeed, Haiti could be the land obstacle that slows down Isaac enough to spare Tampa the worst. Will any thanks be offered, or help, or even a mention?

The biggest concern is Haiti. The capital city of Port-au-Prince, where some 400,000 earthquake refugees still live in tents and sit dead-center in Isaac’s path. Beginning Friday, Haiti and the Dominican Republic could both see a foot or more of rain. Far less has historically triggered deadly flooding and mud slides. — Miami Herald

All I can say is, Haiti, not again? I hope to God that it misses them.

  2. Me too, Jace, but just about certain they’ll get 80+ winds and sideways rain in a direct hit. Hurricane Center not offering much hope for doubt.

    Craig,

As a Haitian, I can say that by and large, the typical American attitude for Haiti is either “who gives a crap?” “where the hell is Haiti?”, “can’t they just do the voodoo thing to scare the storm away?

The only reason the right cares about Haiti is because it’s fertile ground for the religious right to find some christian souls to convert and hollywood sees it as fertile turf for celebrity adoptions.

There is disaster fatigue in this country and the fact that a historically “cursed” country is about to get another slap from God won’t do much to stir the american public to help…after all we haven’t even come close to funding all the promised funds from the earthquake a couple years ago…

  4. GoogleUser says:

I lived on the Gulf Coast during Katrina and Rita, I know there will be casualties from this storm. Stay as safe as you can.

Haiti is such a sad case; money pledged from the last catastrophe is still unpaid.

  5. jace says:

    Craig and Bear,

How the Hell do they take refuge from a storm if the damage from the earthquake isn’t even repaired?

  6. GoogleUser, welcome. Yep, I hear ya. As a lifelong student of Hurricane Center’s masonic toungues, can say they sound really nervous about this one, especially what Haiti is about to get. Beyond that, this storm could do just about anything, or nothing.

Bear -- Isn’t that just the truth? Whenever I hear anything to do with Haiti, I think of their rebellion which was inspired by our own yet were looked down at because it was led by slaves. I also think Jean-Claude Duvalier’s escape by means of the American military.

“Why?…I’ll tell you why. It’s not just a game. It’s war. Just because the battle takes place on the mental plane doesn’t mean it isn’t violent. When I look across the board at the other pieces I see all that’s wrong and evil in the world and all that’s wrong and evil inside of myself. I see all the things that I must struggle and fight against both in myself and in the world at large. I see all the things I hate most about the world and all the things I hate most about myself. I must win. I must prevail. When I lose a chess game I have failed not only myself but all chances I have of improving myself and everything that needs improving in the world.”

Arctic Death Spiral: How It Favors Extreme, Prolonged Weather Events ‘Such As Drought, Flooding, Cold Spells And Heat Waves’

The jet stream, the study says, is becoming “wavier,” with steeper troughs and higher ridges. Weather systems are progressing more slowly, raising the chances for long-duration extreme events, like droughts, floods, and heat waves.
“[The] tendency for weather to hang around longer is going to favor extreme weather conditions that are related to persistent weather patterns,” said Francis, the study’s lead author.
One does not have to look hard to find an example of an extreme event that resulted from a huge, slow-moving swing in the jet stream. It was a stuck or “blocking weather pattern” – with a massive dome of high pressure parked across the eastern U.S. for more than a week – that led to the remarkable March heat wave that sent temperatures in the Midwest and Northeast soaring into the 80s. In some locations, temperatures spiked to more than 40 degrees above average for that time of year.

What Federal Government will be doing while the Party in Tampa meets -

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Low water levels that are restricting shipping traffic, forcing harbor closures and causing barges to run aground on the economically vital Mississippi River are expected to continue into October, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, more than 100 tow boats and barges remain backed up near Greenville, Miss. due to the low river. The U.S. Coast Coast Guard opened an 11-mile stretch of river that had been closed near Greenville, replacing it with a 5-mile zone where only lighter vessels can pass.

Speaking at a meeting of Corps officials, water control managers and business people in Memphis, Major Gen. John W. Peabody said that five harbors — in Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi — are closed, and several others have limited access due to low water levels along the nation’s most important inland waterway.

She would have gone to work more quickly and never let that whole summer go by waiting for the repug to say something.
I enjoy his ability to stay cool and breezy, but it hasn't served him well in a situation where the hounds of hell have been after him. He has been incredibly naive. His greeting of several foreign leaders were unnecessary statements of his disdain of his enemies here.
Hillary already knew how to deal with enemies and how to calm
over-wrought masculine power players. Her tempo of work would have been more steady…..There are hundreds of ways that Hillary would have acted without upsetting her enemies. while still working to the same basic ends as O. Also, the fact that she is white and he is black cannot be counted out -- racists don't want to be shown they like or admire an african-american TOO easily.

All the arguing doesn't change the fact that a supreme court consisting of 2 scalia's, 2 thomases, and the rest is more than just calamitous. Add to that a good congress for mitty and the constitution will be re-written in the supreme court.

Also, re the pale: The pale as I understand it is a sharpened stick or log which is implanted in the earth, sharp end up as used in a row to keep out/in "something."
I know they used this in Ireland before and after Cromwell's time, and the same sentiment was used in Russia with jews.
Russian troops occasionally crossed the pale looking for lucky young jewish boys to help them enlist (and who knows whatelse for the girls. I don't know who used this first and it might even be biblical, I do know that somewhere Vlad had a different use for the pale.

Tampa Bay area hotels rooms can still be found for RNC week
By Drew Harwell, Tampa Bay Times, August 23, 2012

Most of downtown Tampa appears booked solid, and hotels across the bay are loaded up with state delegations, the media and guests.

At the TradeWinds Island Resort in St. Pete Beach, about 250 of its 800 rooms remain open for booking, leaving its occupancy about the same as a typical August week.

That’s because the California delegation, which committed to more than 700 rooms, actually booked about 500, said resort president Keith Overton. Everything from $159 starter rooms to $300 two-bedroom suites remains available.

Jails in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties prepare for influx of RNC-related inmates
By Jessica Vander Velde, Tampa Bay Times, August 23, 2012

Hillsborough has an entire jail exclusively dedicated to booking accused lawbreakers at the Republican National Convention.

It’s a luxury afforded by an inmate population that has shrunk over the years, allowing deputies to move everyone to the larger of the county’s two jails, Falkenburg Road Jail.

That leaves Orient Road Jail, capacity 1,700.

Just wondering what folks think of Mitt’s idea that FEMA be privatized? I’m assuming some of the National Guard has been deployed abroad, instead of being at home where they should be. Aren’t many functions of FEMA contracted out to the lowest-bidding, private company, anyway? How in the heck does it get really privatized?

Well, at least the GOoPers will already be at the convention center if Isaac hits Tampa, so they will actually be pre-evacuated.

What did Joe Biden say to get sent to Tampa on Monday & Tuesday?

I’m sure Mitt is more concerned if any of his offshore banks are in Isaac’s path, than he is about any Haitians.

The GOP spin will be: Isaac hits the convention & it’s punishment for societal evils -- or -- Isaac falls apart & it’s proof they are the chosen ones.
