Talking Points Memo — New images from Mars reveal numerous distinct, different-colored layers forming the mountain — called “strata” — each thought to correspond to a different era in Martian history, each with its own geologic makeup. Scientists compared the exposed layers to those found on Earth in the Grand Canyon.

The exposed layers on Mount Sharp could help scientists figure out whether Mars ever possessed the conditions necessary to support carbon-based life, which is exactly why scientists have chosen this particular peak to study up close when they drive the six-wheeled rover toward and up it over the course of the next year (at the relatively quick rate of about 360 feet per day).

Mount Sharp, also known as Aeolis Mons, was named after NASA scientist and Caltech geologist Robert P. Sharp, who died in 2004.

Mount Sharp, Mars

NASA Mars Science Laboratory — This image taken by NASA’s Curiosity rover highlights the interesting geology of Mount Sharp, a mountain inside Gale Crater, where the rover landed.

Grand Canyon, Earth

NASA Mars Science Laboratory — Before NASA’s Curiosity rover landed on Mars, the strata exposed in Mount Sharp were compared to those in the Grand Canyon of the western United States, shown here. Now that the rover has arrived, scientists are surprised by just how close the similarities between the two terrains are. The lower reaches of Mount Sharp form a succession of strata as thick as those exposed in the Grand Canyon, and with a diversity of colors to match, complete with buttes and mesas. The major difference is that the strata of the Grand Canyon are exposed along a great valley, whereas the strata of Mount Sharp are exposed along the flanks of a great mountain.

Ghost of Katrina hovers over Republican National Convention in Tampa
By Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman, POLITICO
By Alexander Burns & Maggie Haberman, Tampa Bay Times/POLITICO
    August 28, 2012

Republicans have begun to whisper a grim word that sums up all their fears about the 2012 party gathering: Katrina.

No longer are GOP worries focused on the prospect of Tropical Storm Isaac striking Tampa and blowing up the party’s plans to crown Mitt Romney as its nominee. There’s still the possibility of logistical disruptions, but a meteorological mess doesn’t appear to be in the offing here.

Instead, party officials and convention planners are increasingly anxious about a different and possibly more damaging scenario: a split-screen broadcast of Republicans partying in Tampa alongside images of serious storm damage in states such as Louisiana and Mississippi.

  2. patd says:

jack, thanks for posting “Texas delegates planning floor mutiny over RNC rules changes.” makes it worth watching the convention this afternoon. maybe. well, if there’s nothing better to do. clean the litter box or watch angry delegates? what a choice.

  3. patd says:

    phooey they worked it out

But aides to Mr. Romney and activists who had opposed the rules said they had reached the compromise late Monday evening.

“Everyone feels good about the compromise hammered out,” said one Romney aide familiar with the negotiations. The aide asked to be anonymous to discuss private conversations, but said, “What you are seeing is different sides coming together within the party.”
    [....]
Under the compromise, delegates would be selected by the state and local level without interference or control by the party’s presidential candidate. That would allow competing voices inside the convention, both sides said.

But in a nod to the concerns of Mr. Romney’s campaign, delegates sent on behalf of a candidate would be required to vote to nominate that candidate on the first ballot. If they tried to vote for someone else, their vote would be recorded for the candidate to whom they were bound.

So it looks like Isaac is projected to go ashore around NOLA sometime around 5:00 p.m. as a Cat 1 hurricane. That has to be something of a relief for those folks -- it’s nothing like Katrina was. Cat 1 versus cat 3. 75 mph winds versus 175 mph winds. 12 foot storm surge versus 25 foot. Hope they stay safe.

  7. Flatus says:

There were a couple of satellite shots of Florida yesterday that made it appear as if Issac was about to break into two separate tropical storms--one climbing the east coast and the other following the current course. Intriguing

Pavlina Tcherneva: Economists for Romney – A Closer Look
By Yves Smith, Naked Capitalism, August 28, 2012

Yves here. Paul Krugman already pounced on a major, and disturbing, deception on behalf of the Romney economics team: that Glenn Hubbard, Greg Mankiw, and John Taylor (along with Kevin Hassett) published a white paper which grossly misrepresented the research of multiple economists. In other words, they are willing to flat out lie to create the impression their policies ideas have wide-spread support among economists.

By Pavlina Tcherneva, Assistant Professor of Economics at Franklin and Marshall College, Research Scholar at The Levy Economics Institute, and Senior Research Associate at the Center for Full Employment and Price Stability.

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney boasts support from the scientific community for his supply-side trickle-down economic proposal.

No, these are not some obscure economists pushing some obscure ideas. These are the men whose work has defined much of the mainstream economics profession and provided the ‘rationale’ for supply-side, trickle-down economic policy.

These are men whose ideas have stood the test of time and have failed. What can we expect from the economic plan of a man who has their support?

The trouble is, this means pretending there’s no difference between, say:
•The party that backs science, and the party that backs climate change denial.
•The party that has no extremists in positions of power, and the party that is dominated by them.
•The party that said goodbye to racists back in the ’60′s, and the party that has welcomed them ever since.

Republican Nominee Links Pregnancy From Rape and Out-of-Wedlock
By Jonathan D. Salant, Bloomberg News, August 28, 2012

The Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania suggested that a woman who was impregnated by a rapist faces a similar decision to one contemplating whether to give birth to a child out of wedlock.

Tom Smith, who opposes abortion in all circumstances and is challenging Democratic incumbent Bob Casey, later sought to clarify his comments. He said he didn’t intend to compare out- of-wedlock pregnancy to one resulting from rape.

Smith’s comments in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, were in response to a question about how he would react if a rapist impregnated his daughter or granddaughter, according to the Associated Press.

    Ted Cruz: ‘Thankful’ for hurricane
By Rachel Weiner, Washington Post, August 27, 2012 3:36 PM

A generally good rule in politics: Don’t joke about natural disasters. A couple of politicians at the Republican National Convention have broken it already, underscoring the difficulty of hosting a partisan event in the shadow of natural disaster.

At Sunday’s Faith and Freedom Coalition rally, Texas Senate candidate Ted Cruz (R) cracked wise about the tropical storm that’s swept through the Caribbean and headed towards the Gulf Coast.

“We can be thankful for Hurricane Isaac,” he said. ”If nothing else it kept Joe Biden away.” The vice president scrapped plans to rally Democrats in Tampa because of the storm.

Isaac has already left at least 24 people dead and could cause more damage in the U.S.

RNC Hoopla: Ted Cruz Saying Stupid Things, Fitting In Just Fine
By Terrence McCoy, Houston Press, August 28 2012 3:00 PM

Ah, the Republican National Convention. Glitz. Glamour. Ted Cruz — our newly-anointed Texan conservative savior — saying really dumb things. And Christianity. Lots and lots of Christianity.

But first, back to Cruz, who’s scheduled to address the convention tonight. So here’s the deal: This is his first major appearance on a national level — especially if you don’t consider the meh performance he turned in on Meet The Press earlier this month — but he’s apparently already adopted the Republican talking-point triumvirate: lower taxes, less government, and awkward jokes about Joe Biden.

Cruz yesterday said he was “thankful” for Hurricane Isaac because it’s caused Biden to cancel a two-day tour of Florida this week. Later, he announced, “there will be a brand new keynote speaker tomorrow night — Joe Biden. … Every time Joe Biden speaks, he gets Republicans votes.” Hahahahaha. Good one, Ted! Whew!

In many (I think it’s 31) states, there is no provision in domestic law to prevent the rapist from seeking -- and getting -- parental rights to the child he fathered through his crime any differently than a father whose kid was conceived from consensual sexual relations. This teeny weeny factoid is NEVER EVER brought up by or addressed by the Repugns who oppose abortion in such situations, and the news media tends to be just lazy enough not to ask about that little issue. Imagine being the mother (victim) who has to meet with her rapist and give him her child every other weekend (or more if you are in my county).
