Gotta say, I’ve seen maybe hundreds of party convention speeches and this might be the best ever, a stunning and subtle blend of the personal, the political and the freakin awesome.

Without ever mentioning Mitt Romney she mashed him into tiny little pieces. She drew the picture of an arrogant jerk who makes it to the top and then slams the door behind him so no one else could follow.

She forged a bond with middle class Americans in a passage about her early life — and Barack’s — that truly stands out: “We have learned about gratitude and humility. So many people have had a hand in our success, from the teachers who inspired us to the janitors who kept our school clean. We were taught to value everyone’s contribution and treat everyone with respect.” (clips, 3 min.) …

What She Might Be Thinking
Imagining Michelle, to Invisible Ann Romney:

  • ‘At least I don’t have to give a speech telling people my husband is actually human.’
  • ‘When my husband talks about change it’s not about underwear.’
  • ‘OK your husband might have better hair, but at least mine shows me his tax returns.’
  • ‘Not getting into the polygamy thing but you must wonder what else Mitt’s hiding in Cayman Islands?’
  • ‘If my husband strapped our dog to the car roof he’d meet the busy end of a wood chipper.’
  • ‘When my husband sings to me I don’t have to hide in the trunk of one of my Cadillacs.’
  • ‘Why hasn’t Martha Stewart sued you for identity theft?’
  • After convention speech: ‘Take that, beeatch!’

I cracked up at the polygamy line.

  2. Jason Fuente says:

Having now watched it, my first thoughts were that I kept hearing the ‘political’ whistles toward Republican gaffes and forgotten important members of the Democratic party. But, I have to say that the best line was this:
“For Barack, success is not about how much money you make. It’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” It can be heard around 15 minutes 50 seconds.

Oregon Democrat, Well, here I am, for one. It’s late tho so maybe it won’t count, but my reaction Michelle (i missed the first part) was WOW. People must have been wriggling in their seats so they could scream. She is remarkable -- her taste in clothes, in men, and words are marvelous. She managed to get across the feelong that her thoughts were meant to be the exact opposite of something :someone else” was suggesting without giving any word time to those suggestions

Nemo, I said several days ago the you must keep posting You always have something to add. I agree with and disagree with so many people here that it can be confusing, but that’s not the point The point is that you have somehting to say, and the space here and the time.

Flatus, I don’t know if you were thinking of me a being of the glood and doom persuasion, but I get gloomy, not because of polls or economic forecasts. My gloom comes solely because ai don’t trust the repubs. I do think that the mess can be fixed, but I think there’s somehting dirty going on and we are way to vulnerable. Here’s hoping I’m gravely incorrect.

  11. Oregon Democrat says:

Nemo…Just for you,an update from France.

“Very tired here. All in bed, including Cosmo. Purring and snoring galore!”

Additionally, first day of school, the youngest cried only when his papa put him in the arms of the teacher. Middle one
was”tough and silent” until he found another little boy who speaks english. Alex,.of course, made froends playing soccer.

Other english speaking momo from ca,ireland, australia, and nederland. Course my niece doesn’t need that but it might make some things easier.

watching the tag ends of the convention. I get such a kick out o watching Steve Schmidt and even Michael Steeele, to a lesser degree. They have a good time with the msnbc crowd, there's laughter abd jokes. Those other repubs they have on cnn or are so serious and nasty. Is there any good reason to give Ari Fleischer tv time? What a drag he is. Those guys exist only to bad mouth the other party.
They’re not intereste in actual politics or the nation -- all they want is to win the power

As for Tweety and rancid, I thought it was hilarious -- the poor little fetid one must have been terified.

Also I jsut have to state that I think our transportation system is abominable, and blame Carter for it. Straight flights and good connections are things of the past.

    Anyway, g’night, OD.

    Lilly Ledbetter

  15. blueINdallas says:

One of my fave parts was about telling the TRUTH being IMPORTANT! Directed at Paul Ryan just like a mother subtly calling out a child who knows they’ve done something wrong, but without naming him. (I know it fits Mitt, too, but Paul Ryan needs a lyin’ intervention; he seems like a habitual liar.)

Also, I really liked the entire, first group of women who spoke, as well as Kumar and the Castros. Thank goodness for C-SPAN’s coverage!!! Rep. Carolyn Maloney was fantastic.

The mother who spoke about her infant daughter’s heart surgery/no more lifetime coverage caps was very powerful…because with the GOP, life begins at conception and ends at birth.

  16. Jamie White says:

Watching Fox this morning -- painful but I wanted to gloat a little. They are not happy this morning. Democratic Convention? What convention?

  17. corey says:

Yeah, Michelle was good. But, she had an easy job. She didn’t have to make her husband sound more human! Smile

  18. blueINdallas says:

If team Obama had been able to do the Sunday shows, etc., with the aplomb they had last night, they would’ve done a better job with explaining/selling Obamacare and stimulus money.

The country would feel better, as a whole, and consumer confidence would be higher. Let’s hope they keep the momentum going beyond this week, and then, beyond November.

  19. blueINdallas says:

…and if Lily Ledbetter’s speech didn’t strike a chord with people, they just weren’t listening.

  20. pogo says:

I didn’t hang on every word (after all, it was the second night of “Coma”) but I did catch pieces of almost every speech. I thought Lilly Ledbetter put a nail between Ryan’s baby blues. Deval Patrick did a nice job of sticking it to Romney. Castro stated a great case for the Dream Act Kids, and Michelle … I don’t believe I’ve seen a convention or political speech that touched hers.

  21. blueINdallas says:

One of Mitt’s surrogates was talking about how hard it was for him to be an LDS missionary and have doors slammed in his face by the godless Europeans in France.

Yep, so much ~harder~ than actually serving in the military like Duckworth…and so easy for him to slam the economic door in the faces of others. Slam it and lock it behind him.

  22. Jamie White says:

Maureen Dowd is doing her woman scorned Clinton obsession thing again

  23. pogo says:

He’s no different than any other LDS kid wandering the streets in their bicycles in their silly short sleeved white dress shirts and skinny ties trying to sell to people something the people don’t want. They all seem nice, but on the couple of occasions they’ve come to my house (ironically around dinnertime) I’ve asked them for their address so that I could drop by when it will be inconvenient for them to talk and told them No, you can’t leave any literature. You can imagine their response -- a polite thank you and then they left. Yes, godless Europeans in France -- the home of Notre Dame. 69% of the French admit to being of one religion or another.

  24. pogo says:

Jamie, would you take a run at giving instructions on using the link function? I tried Poobah’s instructions and got nothing that worked anything like what it is intended to do.

Apparently I need baby step instructions.

  25. RebelliousRenee says:

Way to go Michelle! Talk about a smack down of the opposition camp without even mentioning them.

pogo… Jamie has a Mac… linking is easy to do on one. After reading what Tony does on his pc a couple months back in order to link…. it sounded like such googly gob that I can see why some here are having trouble.

  26. Nash 2.5 says:

If you didn’t read it, go back to Jamie’s post and click on the link to Maureen Dowd.

It’s a spot-on analysis of the differences between Clinton and Obama.

Think about what Maureen said when Bill speaks tonight.

    (Good “hunting and gathering,” Jamie.)

  27. patd says:

pogo, i think law school is to blame… both on the part of poobah and us. too many grey areas and ways to interpret what we think of as clear language. i had the darndst time following the link instructions until tony , jamie, jack (i think) helped walk me thru it check list style. example:
    step 1: turn on computer
step 2: clean up coffee spill on keyboard
step 3: forget the linking impulse, new thread already.

  28. Nash 2.5 says:

“According to recent news reports, Bill Clinton has now become an adviser to Barack Obama. Bill Clinton is giving advice to Barack Obama. Do you know who is really upset about this? Michelle Obama.” --Jay Leno

  29. pogo says:

Best punditry quote I’ve seen this morning -- this from Alexandra Petri. “Michelle Obama has a power I do not understand, and could never have. But tonight she did even more with it. Following in the steps of Chris Christie, she failed to mention Mitt Romney a single time.” ROF….

  30. pogo says:

    pat, great advice!

    Okay

  32. patd says:

pogo, this is how it works for me:
    1. pull up the targeted article in a separate window from whence is copied and
    2. pasted into the trail mix comment box the title or passage of interest.
    3. go back to the 2nd window with the article and copy the url.
    4. return to tm comment box, hi-lite previously pasted passage.
    5. click “link” (NOT “b-quote” even tho’ that seems to be the more sensible thing to do).
    6. a pop-up will appear on screen (far upper left on my machine) with a slot in it on the bottom left.
    7. place cursor over the “h” of the blue http:// which is in the slot.
    8. left click and paste.
    9. if you see the url you copied in that slot, click the ok button in the popup upper right corner. (there is also a cancel button thankfully for the times one screws up the url click).
    10. eureka! the target passage appears in the comment box.
    11. business as usual from there.
    12. you can now inhale, take a drink and pat yourself on the back at proving how smart and techie you are.
    13. but first hit the “click to edit” and correct your typos.

  33. pogo says:

pat, thanks for the detailed instructions -- I’ll try that.

  34. patd says:

“Julián Castro, yes we love him. Yes we like, no, we respect the Stanford and the Harvard on his resume,” said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “But I also like that this man, unlike another young Latino out of Texas, will tell you that government matters, policy matters and he, like I, will tell you that he is where he is today because someone opened the way for him. “

State Rep. Mary Gonzalez, a Texas Democrat who was elected this summer to represent a district in El Paso, turned to Castro’s brother, State Rep. Joaquin Castro, for advice, but knows others who have received the same from Julian, she said. As the Latino population and electorate grow, both Castros are deeply involved in the effort to turn the solidly red Texas into a blue state, she said. Gonzalez also said that both Castro twins have been active in grassroots political organizing efforts to expand educational opportunities for Texas students.

“No disrespect to Ted Cruz, but Julian and Joaquin Castro have been on the ground doing work for years,” Gonzalez said. “Ted Cruz just sort of showed up. It seems like a ‘Legally Blonde’ moment where he woke up one day and said ‘I want to be senator.’”

  35. patd says:

pogo, as you can see from my 9:44 post, only the url was linked with the link button. the passage was too long imo to be shown all in link blue so it was copied and quoted in the traditional way. also the separate url gives folks like flatus a chance to see the link’s origin before blindly clicking to it.
however, gracious host seems to prefer the former, briefer linking.

  36. patd says:

more from the huffpo latino voices article:

On Tuesday, Castro pointed to a sort of contract between hard working individuals and government.

“Texas may be the one place where people actually still have bootstraps … and we expect folks to pull themselves up by them, he said. “But we also recognize there are some things we can’t do alone. We have to come together and invest in opportunity today for prosperity tomorrow.”"

In Tampa, a week earlier, Cruz described things differently.

“We are all sons and daughters of those who risked everything for freedom, and we have the duty to pass that same opportunity to the generations to follow,” he said. “And yet today, many in Washington seem content to saddle our children with a financial debt larger than our nation has ever seen … government is out of control.”

  37. RebelliousRenee says:

Nash… I thought of you when I saw this Christian Science Monitor cartoon

  38. Flatus says:

Blue, although she didn’t mention it during her speech yesterday evening, Tammy Duckworth, despite having two prosthetic legs, is still an active part of the Illinois Army National Guard currently serving as a lieutenant colonel.

    She’s a soldier’s soldier.

  39. purple-in-tampa says:

In the Michelle Obama verse Ann Romney speeches, I do not know if it was the quality of the speech writers or subject content the writers had to work with but IMO Michelle wins hands down.

  40. whskyjack says:

Ann and Michelle had the same agenda, trying to humanise their husbands. While Michelle may have come from a working class background, her trying to make me believe Obama did is laughable. After a while I was looking for the log cabin.

    Baby Steps for Pogo

    1. Go to the article that you want to cite
    2. Highlight and copy the URL address
    3. Come to Craig’s page and type your message
    4. Highlight the part of the text you want to use as a link (i.e. “NY Times” or title of article).
    5. Click on “link” button at top of message box. A window should open with the http already in blue.
    6. DO NOT click inside this box just look at it, it’s pretty
    6. Hit command (control) + V to paste the link you copied at the top of these instructions.
    7. Check link box visually (DO NOT TOUCH) to make sure the link pasted properly, then press OK.
    8. Click on “Post Comment”

Once the message posts, double check by clicking on the blue link that should have appeared in the message to make sure it has linked properly.

  42. Jamie White says:

Also, if a link is really, really long, you can always copy the whole thing and then go to Tiny URL to shorten it for use here.

  43. whskyjack says:

    Pogo
    for windows

Write your message in the comment box.
    Then go copy the link.
High light a word or two in your message.
    click on the link button.
    A box will appear.
First remove the “http//” you don’t need it.
Then paste in your link and hit OK.
You should see html script around the part of the message you highlighted.
    publish
Edit: my method requires me to use seperate windows for what I’m reading and one for Craigs blog. If you use my order of things and only use one window you lose everything you wrote. But you would figure that out, then slap yourself in the head with a big “DUH” }Wink

  44. patd says:

jamie, gaaacck. you mac people are like martians to us horse and buggy troglodytes. your instructions are sooo much more efficient for pogo than mine. guess it’s cause mine is a wind-up key and rubberband driven propellor computer.

  45. patd says:

Rubio continued. “The press will try to shame you. You read all these articles—it makes it sound as if this is some sort of, you know, dirty endeavor, or wrongful thing to do. This is a patriotic endeavor.”

Rubio closed with a joke: “Did I break any laws, in that speech?” he asked, to applause.

    Pat
I think computer instructions are best gotten from someone whose brain functions like yours.

  47. patd says:

    more from above businessweek link:

Rove listed five people interested in taking embattled Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin’s place should Akin leave the race: Missouri congressional candidate Ann Wagner; state auditor Thomas Schweich; Jo Ann Emerson, representative from Missouri’s 8th district; and two candidates who competed with Akin in the Republican primary. Then he added a surprising sixth name. “The rumor is that Jack Danforth is interested, which would be astonishing,” Rove said of the former Missouri senator who turns 76 on Sept. 5.

  48. patd says:

    and even more:

Barbour took the microphone to discuss the importance of voter turnout efforts. “Democrats have an interesting turnout program, they call it ‘Knock and Drag,’” Barbour said. “You go to certain neighborhoods, you knock on the door, and you drag every adult there out, put ’em on a bus, and take ’em to vote.” Because of the prevalence of early voting in many states, this was easier than ever, Barbour said. “If this is going to be a really, really close election, we’re gonna have to perform nationwide like we did in Wisconsin,” he said, referring to the recall election for Governor Scott Walker.

  49. Katherine Graham Cracker says:

If Danforth isn’t available maybe Clint’s chair is

The media coverage is as always pathetic and designed to prop up the sagging goopers

CNN Gloria Borger — ‘people are too cynical for this much hope’
and my favorite from some clown --”well you would expect Obama to have a better convention — he’s done this before” well doesn’t Mittens have all resources possible available to him..maybe he just makes bad decisions?

the header for ABC --’race tied’…puleeze

The cameras panned the audience and it was truly diverse young, old, middle-age --all races --the only minorities were not on the platform

  50. Flatus says:

Jamie’s method show’s the logic of what must be done in baby steps. Jack’s elevates that logic to a higher level. Pat’s is truly elegant.

  51. patd says:

    jack,
    thank you, i think.
    but “functions” is an overstatement.

flatus, now you’ve gone too far. “elegant”? golly gee whiz.

  52. nemo says:

Pogo, I was not getting it until Craig gave me that last instruction right about the time you left yesterday. The main thing that helped me was pushing the ‘preview’ button after I did the URL embedding part to make sure I had it right. That way, if you get it wrong a few times, you can keep going back to redo it before it is actually posted on the site.

The part I was missing is typing the sentence that you want the link embedded (Craig’s word) into the comment box, highlighting it, then going over to the URL to copy it. Before you paste the URL address into the ‘URL address’ box (delete http: that’s already in the box like Jack said) that’s already in the box because you don’t need that one — it’ll mess up the URL you’re pasting). Before you paste your URL, make sure your word or sentence is still highlighted (that’s the key). That sentence or word you highlighted will automatically be picked up and used as the link.

Then hit preview to see if it did what you want. If it looks right, then you go back to finish commenting, because the hard part is done. All you have to do after getting the URL part done is type what you want to say.

…. then maybe you’re having a different problem than I had. I had to read carefully through his instructions a few times, before I finally figured out where I was going wrong.

  53. Flatus says:

God, Pogo, you two guys talking lawyer speak just broke everything for the rest of us. Frown

  54. Flatus says:

My bad, that was Nemo talking lawyer speak. Chloe, are you a lawyer??

  55. Katherine Graham Cracker says:

Haley Barbour what’s he doing out in public — shouldn’t he be home filing for FEMA funds to fix his vacation home --that’s what he did last time a hurricane came through--

He is the embodiment of Foghorn Leghorn --

  56. nemo says:

Ha, No I’m not, Flatus. I’m barely capable of raising my 3 yr. old granddaughter (who is constantly outsmarting me — she keeps me jumping through hoops.) Smile

You must be looking at someone else’s post. ??

    Good morning, btw.

What an opportunity for your nephews! This will give them such a large awareness of so many other cultures. As for the crying (as well as the adjustment for your other two nephews) that would happen in any new school, even if they were here in the U.S.

Please keep us informed of their progress. I can imagine how much you miss them. Can’t wait ’til you make your first visit there, and hoping we hear about that too.

  58. Flatus says:

Good morning, he says, while heading back towards the laundry room. Not to worry, I’ve had many years of training including how to wash my T-shirt, drawers and socks in my steel pot. Figure that one out.

  59. nemo says:

You wouldn’t believe how much time I spend in the laundry room, Flatus — but that never means it’s ever completely caught up.

  60. nemo says:

I heard this on NPR Fresh air this afternoon. Worth a listen:

Sadly, I have to agree, Jack.
    .. gotta go.

  61. theresa43 says:

Michelle was terrific! Speech was electrifying — the delegetes were at full emotional attention. I LOVED the way Smile she intermingled the personal with her oh so subtle political digs. She is a great representative for all of us who love middle class and democracy.

  63. whskyjack says:

I have a sister who has been a programer for years.
She says the reason she is so good is because she thinks like a computer. Any way her brain and mine aren’t alike and all of her explanations are as clear as mud.
Of course it doesn’t help that as she is laying out this logical explanation my mind is darting back and forth going “oh look, shiny, shiny”

Romney/Ryan remind me of the song about kids who whimper & whine from, “The Electric Company.”

  67. Jamie White says:

Just got back from my community health care clinic for a visit with my PA who is an absolutely brilliant sweetie pie. The clinic itself is uncrowded, clean and with a great helpful staff plus being computer linked to all of the hospitals in the county. While there they took blood, gave me two vaccines, gave me a report on a sonogram, and did a referral to a gastroenterologist. This visit was preceded by a CT Scan and a sonogram. All of this cost me exactly nothing thanks to Medicare, Medicare Advantage, the state of WA, and Obamacare (well nothing except for my $100 a month deduction from SS).

The Referral to the specialist will cost me $20. Should a visit to a hospital be in my future (not too likely at present), that visit will cost me $50.

Because everyone in WA is in some sort of coordinated state run plan in alliance with all of the hospitals, insurance companies, and pharmacies, the costs are controlled and affordable with a sliding scale dependent upon income that covers from the most impoverished to the wealthy (who can still get supplemental policies with luxury bells and whistles).

I am so sorry for all the other states that don’t have such an enlightened system. Maybe it is all due to our neighbor to the North so you can blame Canada, but everybody should have decent care without going broke.

  68. pogo says:

Could Obama fare without compromise in a second term?

This is a test … it is only a test. and it looks like…. IT WORKS.

Thanks, pat -- you’re th’ nuts. (But you may have created a monster…)

  69. blueINdallas says:

How wonderful it must be to live in a forward-thinking state, Jamie! Hope all is well with you.
I will not be watching the Cowboys game tonight; I’m sure NBC will play the taped half-time interview again and again, anyway.

The one thing I took slight issue with last night, was Sebelius talking about her 91-year old father getting Medicare. I do think means-testing is a good idea, except that it would probably cost a lot to implement it & cause a great headache if there was a glitch in the system.

You know whose speech I was not blown away by last night, was Rham’s. I was happy that he dialed back his normal, nastiness a bit, but so many others were fabulous. Looking forward to tonight!

blue, you must really have seethed then at the crocodile tears ryan wept over his mom’s medicare need.

  72. patd says:

pogo, thanks for that link (and kudos to the monster). wapo editors are right about this:

Most fundamentally, any solution to the nation’s fiscal crisis is going to require compromise. No matter who is in charge, taxes will have to go up and entitlements will have to be scaled back. The math doesn’t work any other way.

These aren’t the kind of reforms that lend themselves to populist, call-your-congressman campaigns. They will be politically unpopular, and they can be implemented only if Republicans and Democrats hold hands and jump together. A public campaign could be helpful, if it’s designed to educate voters on why the nation’s future depends on painful trade-offs. But the will and fortitude to make those trade-offs will matter more.

  73. pogo says:

I live to serve. (Oh, and thanks again for yours).

  74. Jamie White says:

    Blue,

The main problem with means testing once someone is retired is that tracking individual by individual is expensive. Once a year I submit an income form to my Community Center (for others primary care physician). Based on that submission (pain of perjury and all that) my charges are set for the coming year for tests, drugs, and specialists. My understanding is that while I pay $20 for a specialist office visit, others pay as much as $50. This is on top of whatever your insurance company has negotiated for services, but the state mandates what basics everyone receives.

It truly is a great medical system.

  75. Jamie White says:

I’m firmly convinced that Democrats, whatever their educational level, can handle complex subjects and nuance better than the far right. There have been brilliant conservatives, but they have been pretty well driven out of the party, moved to the Libertarians, or are laying low in desperation.

    fun convention balloon history

Republicans and Democrats love balloon drops at their national conventions.

Thousands of balloons, red, white, and blue balloons, filled with air, tumble down from the rafters. The band blares away, the delegates and visitors whoop with joy. It’s pandemonium, carefully calculated to show that happy days are here again, even when the wise men behind the scenes worry their candidate doesn’t stand a chance.

Balloon drops are tricky; balloons don’t always drop the way they should.

    pogo…

I watched the MSNBC live feed from a site I got from Tonyb.

So I agree 100% with you on the First Lady’s Speech.

I have a question for you or anyone here that heard President Obama’s Speech at the DNC Convention. I have not yet heard it, but did hear it was a very powerful and good speech.

Do you think that Michele’s speech was better than her husbands from the convention?

    Have a great evening.

    Oops…..
I am talking about the Red State, Blue State Convention Speech.

    Later……………………….

  92. whskyjack says:

The First Lady’s speech Tuesday was written at a 12th grade level — the highest in history among the wives of presidential nominees and far above Ann Romney’s lowest mark of a 5th grade level

Just ran both speeches through a Flesch-Kincaid readability calculator,(the scale the article claimed to use) the first lady’s came in at the ninth grade level, Mrs. Romney’s came in at the eighth grade level.
As grade level is mostly determined by the number of syllables to words a quick look at the speeches pointed to the difference. Mrs. Romney’s was a speech about family and life. There was no need for long polysyllabic words. Mrs. Obama’s was more political and had many more multi syllable political boiler plate words.

So I believe that web article rates a “liar, liar, pants on fire” I personally would put the whole web site on my “total BS” list.

Lot of lies being passed around as truth in this campaign

  94. patd says:

They could have a special f/x balloon drop for the viewing audience

xr, they could do a light show type projection of balloons (or for that matter dollar bills, cats and dogs) raining from the arena ceiling and erupting from the floor or off the tiers ala rock festival productions. cost a lot less and not leave such a mess afterward. billions and billions of computer generated images floating around, strobe lights, mesmerizing music… the whole place going nuts. and not a scrap of scraps to clean up the next morning.

  95. patd says:

fake balloon show is in keeping with the political times… no facts, no reality, less than human candidates. so why not virtual balloons?

  96. Jamie White says:

    Jack

I ran the entirety of both speeches through and it came out as 10 and 8. Not quite pants on fire, but stretched a bit. Still Michelle’s was a much more interesting speech.

Purely for curiosity, I had to check and ran a few of my blog articles through and they came up at 14. May just have to tone it down a bit. Smile

  101. whskyjack says:

Jamie, I used calculate grade level by hand back when I was taking teacher training (mumble, mumble) years ago. we used a formula.
    I googled and found this.

    1. Select a few paragraphs to use as your base.
    2. Calculate the average number of words per sentence. Multiply the result by 0.39
    3. Calculate the average number of syllables in words (count and divide). Multiply the result by 11.8
    4. Add the two results together
    5. Subtract 15.59

    So basically
the more syllables per word and the longer the sentences the higher the grade level.

Wonder how a Churchhill speech would score, or Hemingway

Blue , I just forwarded your comments re mitt in dangerous

  103. whskyjack says:

“We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing-grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!”

  104. whskyjack says:

The wind rose in the night and a three o’clock in the morning with the rain coming in sheets there was a bombardment and the Croatians came over across the mountain meadows and through patches of woods and into the front line. They fought in the dark in the rain and a counter-attack of scared men from the second line drove them back. ***

The wounded were coming into the post, some were carried on stretchers, some walking and some were brought on the backs of men that came across the field. They were wet to the skin and all were scared. We filled two cars with stretcher cases as they came up from the cellar of the post and as I shut the door of the second car and fastened it I felt the rain on my face turn to snow. The flakes were coming heavy and fast in the rain.

  105. whskyjack says:

What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their Finest Hour.’

Nothing like a good Churchill quote to cleans the mind of the pablum of the past couple of weeks.
