Debate Game Changers: Dukakis Death Miss
The first 2012 general election presidential debate is a week from today and it looks like Mitt Romney needs a win — or he needs Barack Obama to make a huge mistake. Looking back, it’s tough to find game changers in these forums, but here’s one: Michael Dukakis’ bloodless, clinical answer to Bernard Shaw provocatively asking if his wife “were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?”

Smart phone woo. A first for moi.
pogo, woo or woe?
Pat, it’s woo. I’ve had the phone for almost a year and love the damn thing. Internet, Email, weather, navigation, spider solitaire, music (which I hardly use), camera and now a woo on CC.com. It’s a fricking entertainment center in my pocket. What’s not to like (other than the dismal battery life that is, but we learn to live with it)? Just having decent weather and navigation has been more than worth it.
Morning pogo and patd, High tech Woo in the AM! Did you voice to text or thumbs?
Debate Game Changer is a high probability this election cycle.
The October crash will take a new meaning…. Which ironically will translate to a boom in the stock market once we know the non sustainable debt will be addressed. If Romney has a solid debate and gets his message out… The course will certainly change.
I appreciated Dukakis’ principles answer -- although it would not have been mine. I’d like to think my answer would have involved something like a desire to personally apply painful excision of offending parts, to be force fed to the sumbitch, who would be later found dead. But I then would say something like I don’t believe in the death penalty administered by a system that can’t get it right from arrest to conviction to sentencing to carrying out the sentences. Glad I wasn’t put in the position to have to answer that one.
Index fingers & autofill (I was riding in the car with LP and didn’t want to distract his driving). Mrs. P still has a Blackberry and uses thumbs -- which is shortly going to be replaced.
I am not sure Romney’s debate performance, no matter how brilliant, will be enough to change the game for him. But who knows? maybe he’ll shine in a way he hasn’t been able to thus far. My case is that he had a decent performance at the convention, but it was not emotionally moving (not his style) and was not specific enough to make voters think he knows what he’ll do if elected. It needed to be one or the other if he wanted to sway the fewer undecided voters that continue to dwindle and drift to Obama if the polls can be trusted at all.
By being evasive about any specifics of his plan he’s set up too many softball questions for Obama and too many hardball questions for himself. That’s not a good setup for a stellar performance in the debates. He is I’m guessing, praying for some catastrophic event or news he can pin on Obama. Without it, I’m afraid my Kentucky Republican friend is going to wake up to be sorely disappointed on 11/7.
And I do use VTT extensively -- me & the phone are up to about a 90% accuracy after it’s either learned to understand my goofy accent or has taught me to speak more clearly.
Just as one example of the upstream swimming Romney has do to shine in the upcoming debates, Ruth Marcus points out some of the type questions he should have to be called upon to explain. Now I know what his smart answer would be. It would be to rely on the amnesia of the voting public and invoke the fiction of Reagan’s pulling the US out of the economic malaise of the late 70s/early 80s by lowering tax rates (primarily on upper income earners) to spur economic growth. The disconnects are that gas prices dropped from $70/bbl to $20/bbl, real wages dropped from $9/hr to $8/hr, spending increased as a %age of GDP and the national debt increased threefold (these two factors are the dirty little secret of Reaganomics -- we spent our way out of the recession with the help of OPEC).
So Romney’s simplistic approach won’t wash if the moderators and Obama are on their game.
Thus far this appears to the blog of the “P”s. And strangely silent except for this P.
What’s left to say?
One last post before I actually get to work.
RCP now shows Obama at 265 EC votes on its electoral college map. But wait, of the 7 states that aren’t in one column or another (82 EVs) Romney leads in (drumroll, please) NONE of them. If RCP is anywhere near right on its poll averages Romney’s path to an EC victory has virtually disappeared. An interesting comparison is with the 2004 election -- Bush’s margin was 2 points higher than Obama’s beginning in early Sept. (no effective swiftboating is apparently out there to use against Obama) but the polling lines are very close to parallel with ’04. Does this mean much? Not until 11/6, but it is interesting and suggests that the Romney campaign isn’t getting any traction. Too bad.
Gotta be something, sturg…
Toles. LOL
pogo… thanks… finally someone other than me linking to a cartoon on this here blog…
sturg… now I can’t look at Dukakis without thinking “hayl-mut”… and it’s all your fault…
RR, I’m a big cartoon lover -- just forget to link them. And Toles is one of my favorites who tends to focus on politics. Telnaes, too.
pogo, the blackberry i hope
On this date in 1964, I was very busy becoming a mother for the second time.
Pogo, smartphone woo in the loo. Your next first?
New NYT/CBS poll has Obama out to 9-10 pt leads in Florida and Ohio. That’s no dead heat anymore, if accurate.
I just can not vote for someone that has such a phony laugh. Maybe he will do the phony laugh during the debates and really turn off people.
Mitt Romney On NFL Replacement Refs: ‘Experienced Referees’ Should Return’
Dukakis should have said, “Only if the rapist was Black.”
I’m sick of liberals getting hit with trick questions while the conservatives get easy, predictable ones.
Liberal debate moderators are always tougher on liberal candidates, trying too hard to prove they’re being fair.
Pong…Rmoney IS getting his message out to the little people. It is why he is dropping so dramatically in the recent polls.
Purple-IT: I heard that laugh last night on “The Daily Show” and had exactly the same thought.
It’s the most obviously fake laugh I’ve ever heard.
I just realized, Romney is Eddie Haskell. (Character on the 60s TV show, “Leave it to Beaver.”)
The only answer that would work is, ‘I have feelings like any other human being--I’d have to recuse myself from any action in the case. That said, and my rage and despair put aside, when the Sun shines once again, my position on the issue will not have changed.’
If Rmoney is serious about being Prez, he should bring his money home from overseas. Tax it a the current rate (which he is planning to change for the rest of his uber wealthy gang, if elected). The man is too out-of-touch with most citizens and their daily struggle. He lives in a fantasy world. FDR was able to empathize…Moron Rmoney is not. Perhaps, it is his religious training? Many tried to pin Rev. Wright on Obama and it did’t stick. But, he comes from a religious family who ran from the government in the past (twice). Who knows? His only goal in getting elected is to help the uber wealthy humans and their corporations.
How does an uber-rich person learn how to laugh when everyone in his daily life is giving a phony reaction to everything he says?
Yep, Rmoney would be called President Stranger!
Big clue here to what’s sinking Romney — you can’t run on being an efficient manager if voters decide can’t run a competent campaign
ABC Poll:
Overall, do you have a favorable or unfavorable impression of the way Barack Obama is running his presidential campaign?
Favorable: 53
Unfavorable: 45
…the way Mitt Romney is running his presidential campaign?
Favorable: 36
Unfavorable: 61
Scarborough cracked me up this morning, his “Sweet Jesus” moment at the end of this clip pretty much sums up how every GOP pro I know is feeling these days..
Another reason we don’t need Madonna now that we have Lady Gaga — Madonna thinks Obama is a Muslim
What does Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry have in common? They showed to be elitist, whimpy like and not able to fight back when the “ANGRY WHITE GUYS” started yelling at them, they cowered and sat in the corner, while The country’s mood was that we would take a chance of someone that would defend us rather than be weak and not defend us….imo.
…..but this Obama….he wasn’t about to get caught being called “weak on defense”…..instead like Johnson after being told that we had no chance of winning a war……he sent in more troops….Obama just escalated and started a cpl of his own……while defense contractors like Sen. Feinstein and her husband just get richer and richer.
….think that Obama could have looked very strong on defense had he kept up the fighting in the pac area for a while( not chased the bad guys west or into other country’s)….killed some of the bad guys and switched tosearching and fighting those that attacked us.
Instead he used 9/11 just as Bush did…and is killing innocents just like Bush did…..this makes him unelectable to me…..I will be voting for a third party….or anyone other than the Cubs or the Sox……
This is not a sport to me…..even Ron Paul is a better choice….even with all his faults he would make a better potus.
Plus having two parties that would not let him accomplish all that much…..he could not possibly do more harm to the country that has been harmed on purpose (for the sake of getting richer) than the other two siamese party’s have done already. That and I think that he would have changed some of his thinking and would make a few adjustments to them……but I know that he would have that country’s interest at heart….and not Wall ST, the Large Banks. NO MORE inside trading from the white house.!!
While I enjoy The Mayor of Looneyville and his tv wife looking uncomfortable and unhappy , the best part of Morning Joe was this am he had on Ed Rendell with the biggest grin ever
a friend in Ohio GOP party thinks this is the ad that sunk Romney there, made him “the guy who fires you” in a state that “knows a lot about getting fired” (thinks Mitt camp now must consider electoral paths w/out his state)
There is no path without Ohio
I think what sunk Rmoney in Ohio was asking if you are better off now…the R-gov former fox anchor Mr. Heartlessland said Ohians are better off now
Ha, even Karl giving up on Ohio? “Look, there are 11 different ways to win without Ohio,” Rove said on Fox News

Did K-k-k-karl give any of the eleven ways. I think there are stumbling blocks in every route. The only way Rmoney wins is to cheat. Is the one of the eleven or all of them
Sturg,

Hey… Mr. Solarman… about time you showed up. There’s not really anything I’d argue with you in your 11:19 post. IMO, both parties are responsible (well that and Wall St. greed) for the mess we are now in.
We all have a choice on Nov. 6th. We can stay home or we can get our butts off the couch and go vote. Anyone choosing the latter has to decide for whom to vote. I respect your, mqw, Champ, and Jack’s choice to vote third party. And who knows… maybe Tony will join you.
I’ve made my choice… and I’m living with it. If the opposite choice wins the election… I’ll live with that.
Now get your butt over here and join us pinks for a little partying… I wanna pomegranate margarita.

The GOP’s last desperate hope is that the debates will save Romney.
No way.
All Obama has to do is keep quoting Romney’s changing positions, on every issue that comes up, and ask him, “Which one are you trying to sell us tonight?”
And after the debates what will they say is Romney’s next last chance, Obama’s Second Inaugural?
Maybe Rove will get John Roberts to secretly swear in Romney first. The Chief does get confused at these inauguration thingies.
It’s not just the Presidential and Congressional races that matter.
Here in Maine we must endure total GOP control; they have both houses of the legislature, and our governor is a foul-mouthed tea-party moron. Outside of Maine, you don’t hear about him because he hasn’t been able to do very much due to his astonishing incompetence. He’s always making extreme (and stupid) public statements that he has to retract in a day or two.
The more Romney sinks in the polls, the better chance the Dems have to get control of at least one chamber of the legislature. (We’re stuck with Governor LePage for two more years.)
“ps……pucker up gals…….was going to ask for seconds…..but better not huh?”
Renee, and im bring Patsi to the party. I can just hear her saying “Solar, in yer dreams” when i said the above ^.
Partying with the pinks huh?, ok…im going to get Tony the baloney (need a sober driver) and some of the other guys….will work on the where to go for it……hey how about a costume day-night out with the pinks?
Later, have to get my exercise in.

Nash, i agree with Solar, your submarine screen door line yesterday still has me chuckling. You should also put that stuff on twitter, or I am going to start stealing too
good to be back, sturg -- maybe mostly in the morning and at lunch (evenings are pretty much out -- too much LP and honey do stuff to do) but hey, it’s the last 6 weeks before the election. What better time to plagiarize political writers? And it ain’t insight that important (mine is mostly borrowed) it is humor -- and yours is right up there -- so get to work posting.
Solar, great to see you around again. If you get a group together, I’d like a virtual fried chicken sammich on a hoagie bun, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and hot pepper spread with onion rings and a cold Sam Adams lager. (that will beat hell out of the Greek salad I had in the real world).

Not forgetting about U.! Lucky I wasn’t around for that concrete guy crack. “concrete guy with a brain..who woulda thunk it”

Anyway….she said that i could have only one wish……limited to having a perfect memory of the whole weekend for ever…..or being with any gal-s, that i wanted to dance the night away, and what ever…
I can’t remember a damm thing from that weekend………….

It’s much easier to answer questions if you have a stock, knee jerk answer and don’t actually think about the why and how of an issue. Liberals will always try to convey the ins and outs of a situation and the complications involved.
Of course, one way to beat a right winger is to keep asking for details: How will you do that? Who will do that? What will happen if you do that? Who will be hurt if you do that?
The more they talk, the worse they sound.
The screen door comment isn’t mine. I stole it from somewhere, but I can’t remember where. I first heard it years ago.
Maybe if I Google it, it will show up on wikipedia.com, which will probably have a 16 page article on the history of the usage of the phrase, written by a graduate student in Britain who doesn’t go out on dates very often.
I Googled it and I found out that some submarines do in fact have screen doors. They are used in port when the hatches are open to prevent bugs from coming aboard.
Yes, sailors wouldn’t want cockroaches on a submarine. (It’s hard enough having to deal with the officers.)
compared with:
They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
I’m not opposed to carrots, either.
“The screen door comment isn’t mine. I stole it from somewhere, but I can’t remember where.”
It’s an old “Polish” joke.
This rings a bell: “Threaten loudly and carry a huge carrot.” But, who said it?
Probly Elmer Fudd
“I stole it from somewhere, but don’t remember where.”
That looks more like an Alzheimers joke.
Which woudl be “Thweaten woudwy and cawwy a huge cawwot.”

A Seventh Day Adventist Preacher, A Mormon Sunday School Teacher, and a Muslim Imam walk into a bar, and yell out simultaneously,
“We’re in the wrong joke !”
That one needs a little more work.
I nominate Pogo for the Pulitzer Prize for One-Liners.
Seriously, though, the Obama administration has made clear through action that it will respond with force to international security challenges, so I don’t know what posturing on the floor of the U.N. does besides exacerbate an already tense situation. Why not at least make overtures at bringing Iran into the larger global community, rather than fostering a polarized environment with a very politically hungry Russia at the other end? Geez.
Obama just said that he is in favor of democratic change in the middle east.
Question: then why is he propping all of its existing dicks?….dictators that is….
It’s a sort of military out-sourcing. Think of foreign aid like a security payment. Personally I support that type of diplomacy when the alternative is armed conflict. All that “democratic change” talk is an attempt to retain the moral high-ground, which was lost years ago, and continues to be squandered.
Used to like Paneta:
Drones: the west’s new terror campaign
The CIA’s Predator drones are bringing to Pakistan the same horror that Hitler’s doodlebugs inflicted on London
If you don’t have screens on the submarine hatches, swarms of lacewings could get in. Having swarms of lacewings might lead to an plague of frogs. A plague of frogs invites an infestation of iguanas. Infestations of iguanas arouse the attention of krakens.
http://411posters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/taylor-20000-leagues-under-the-sea.jpg
From that article above:
“However, there can be no sensible disagreement over certain salient facts: first, the US now has more than 10,000 weaponised drones in its arsenal; second, as many as six Predator drones circle over one location at any given time, often for 24 hours a day, with high-resolution cameras snooping on the movements of everyone below; third, the Predators emit an eerie sound, earning them the name bangana (buzzing wasp) in Pashtu; fourth, everyone in the area can see them, 5,000ft up, all day – and hear them all night long; fifth, nobody knows when the missile will come, and turn each member of the family into what the CIA calls a “bugsplat”. The Predator operator, thousands of miles away in Nevada, often pushes the button over a cup of coffee in the darkest hours of the Waziristan night, between midnight and 5am. So a parent putting children to bed cannot be sure they will wake up safely.”
I am gratified by the nomination, but I owe it all to Hal Smith and Mel Blanc.
don’ want no iguanas on my boat. They have the creepiest eyes in the animal kingdom (except maybe for Marty Feldman (RIP)).
Hi Solar !
I’ve been trying to find furlands dugout. Looks like a Milwaukee bar. Probably full of brewer fans. You’re lucky to get out alive, being a bud drinker and all.
Anywhat, good luck lying in wait for unsuspecting cuties at Nino’s. The last time we stopped there it was closed.
How’s the rebuilding of the Lincoln Mall across from Nino’s coming ? Did you get to squirt concrete over there ?
the submarine screen door at very least belongs to the “as funny as” jokes at one time…..turd in punchbowl, cigarette machine cancer ward, etc and I’m sure that goes back to very early sixties in my case cause I remember the guy who first told me one, and probably some before that….
be that as it maybe to use it in relation to romney’s window treatment was a flash on a par with Ran’s “Happy headed Ho”.
His name was Tovey. He could look dead at you and you couldn’t tell it was him whistling. That was priceless in an eighth grade classroom……
It was nice of Solar to get Trail Mix the Pakistan Travel Ad.
I worry about presidential debates.
If debates decided the outcomes of elections, we would be choosing John Kerry’s successor.
Solar,

Hi Solar,
Excellent post!
No more war protests weekly here in New Smyrna Beach from the local Democratic Club since Obama took office, WHY? Ah, partisanship, lovely.

Renee,
Well, I only no so far I’m not voting for Romney/Ryan. If Craig’s latest poll is correct and Obama is 10 points ahead here in Florida, well i won’t be tempted to play the lesser of two evils game again. A green Party choice on my part is looking better and better.

“The CIA’s Predator drones are bringing to Pakistan the same horror that Hitler’s doodlebugs inflicted on London”
Naaaaa. Predators and v1s are different in both quality and quantity.
Qualitatively, Predators are aimed weapons that hit specially targeted people, whereas v1s were unguided ballistic weapons that did not discriminate between individuals and movie theaters or hospitals.
Quantitatively, the v1s carried X8.5 the explosives that the Predator’s Hellfire missles carry, and therefore killed people in a much larger radius.
In less than 3 years German VIs killed more than 22,000 non-combatants. We’ve used predator missles for 17 years, and haven’t come close to the killing as many people with them as the Germans did with the v1.
It’s like comparing aimed shotguns with randomly-tossed grenades.
I think the point remains that violence begets more violence.
To be fair, if I was in the armed services and had a military objective, and it was between putting my ass on the line or a fancy toy-plane, I’d pick the plane ten times out of ten.
I’m telling ya, dude… like a “man-on-the-street” political interview show where you highlight the commonality of average Americans despite differences in political philosophy. You could call it “Middle Ground with Craig Crawford”. Maybe it’s a dumb idea: I’m no TV exec.
or “Common Ground” — Not a dumb concept at all, Champ, but the trouble is that if you were a TV exec you’d be too dumb to see that. At least that’s been my experience with their kind.
In 2 weeks the poll watching groups moved MI, WI, & OH from their Toss-Up Columns to their Likely Obama Columns, giving the President a 265 -- 191 lead in the Electoral College Race.
This is too conservative, and smells like crass commercial considerations are making the decisions.
At this point I’m also moving the other 82 EC votes in the Toss-Up Column to the Obama Column. CO, FL, IA, NV, NH, NC, & VA have all obviously broken Obama’s way. That should make the race 347 -- 191 now. But, maybe not.
IN, MO, and AZ now look iffy, so I am taking their 32 EC votes from the Leans Romney Column and putting them in my Toss-Up Column. This evening the EC race is 347 -- 159, and could easily to become 379 -- 159.
If 379 -- 159 looks familiar, it is because that was the outcome of the 1996 race between Clinton and Dole.
“I think the point remains that violence begets more violence.”-IxC @ 12:27am
Yes, sir, I am sure that is your point. I am not at all sure that is Solar’s, and doubt that it is MQW’s.
My point is, hitting a rural house known to be used by a person or persons who target Americans and allies is different from blowing up an eight-plex occupied by non-combatants, so Solar’s camparison is inaccurate both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Well, I think if you were positioned for the 50+ demographic and marketed properly, you could be a cable-news cash-cow! Then, we could have a pizza party.
Tee hee hee. I’d keep my thoughts to myself, but that can lead to headaches.
The really sweet thing about this election is that from it the teepirs will learn zilch.
The lesson for them will be, “We lost because we didn’t have a real Conservative running ! We need a ryan-paul ticket, or a huckabee-bachmann ticket that will bring the real people out to the polls.”
teepirs will make a platform that demands the privatization of the Lincoln Memorial, the death penalty for women who have abortions, America out of socialist NATO, a return to the gold standard (with Jesus pictured on the coins), Freedom of Speech as long as it’s American speech -- no foreign talk allowed. We won’t have diplomatic relations with anyone, but undiplomatic relations with everyone. Homosexuality will be treated by exterminators, and Conservative (calvinist) Christianity will be pushed in the schools instead of science and literature. “Coloreds will learn their proper place.”
