While obviously not changing the outcome of the 1988 campaign, Democratic running mate Lloyd Bentsen’s famous belittling of his GOP counterpart, Dan Quayle, cemented an unflattering image that never went away — until Quayle himself disappeared from the national stage after he and George H.W. Bush lost reelection four years later.

That Kimmel ad is a scream. Obama should buy the right to air it -- for Mittens of course.

    purple-in-tampa:

Great video. But there should have been a bottle of Champagne and the waiter should have been Hispanic. At the end of the ad, Romney would say, “Gracias, amigo.”

  7. purple-in-tampa says:

The one thing that is missing from Kimmel’s Romney Ad is Romney’s phony laugh.

  8. Nash 2.5 says:

Newest Romney radio ad, now playing in Maine…

Smooth-voiced narrator: “If you are one of the 47%, you probably wouldn’t vote for Mitt Romney. But that’s OK. Right now, across the state of Maine, hundreds of dedicated Republican operatives are working hard to make sure that you can’t vote, even if you wanted to. So stop looking for government handouts, and start taking personal responsibility for your miserable, wretched, lower-class life.”

“Hi. This is Mitt Romney, and I approve this message.”

  9. pogo says:

Nash, that Champagne is verboten. Craig, I liked the CNN suggestion of Ted Turner to return to CNN. Not a bad idea. And I loved the Conan clip about Hasselbeck that was on that page.

  10. pogo says:

I miss Michael Kinsley -- except when his column happens to pop up at RCP or elsewhere, like this. Great couple lines from it:

“The notion that the Democrats are out to “punish success” has long been a favorite Republican trope. The charge is unfair, as anyone who has seen a Democratic politician kowtowing to wealth or fame can testify. But Democrats at least retain some skepticism about success. It is not self-ratifying. Much individual success also helps the country, some does not. Even when success is fully deserved and socially admirable, there is no reason that it needs a tax break as well.”

“Even if Romney wins the election, because of some unpredicted development between now and Nov. 6, the judgment on his campaign is fixed: It has been terrible. Despite his success in business, he’s a lousy politician. And if he loses the election, that will be a comment not just on his campaign strategy, but also on his whole way of thinking.”

    I miss Kinsley.

Prices for long-acting contraception will be halved for 27 million women in the developing world through a new partnership, former President Bill Clinton and other world leaders announced Wednesday.

The deal will help avoid almost 30 million unwanted pregnancies and save an estimated $250 million in health costs, the partnership said. By slowing down the pace of births and avoiding medical problems such as premature births, the partnership said about 30,000 maternal deaths and 280,000 child deaths can be avoided.

I think the margins are now to big to steal but just the idea that they are so blatantly trying..and using their usual scare tactics to do it.

Today Dan Quayle would be a welcome addition to the Republican party.

  24. Katherine Graham Cracker says:

Ted Turner developed CNN at the height of his bad boy behavior -- now that he is more sober and reflective -- he might do an even better job

Not that it is any of my business at all — but Henry Fonda must have done a real number on Jane.

  25. pogo says:

pat, that comment about the birth control coming out of CGI I assume shows something to me -- if the numbers are right, an unwanted pregnancy in the parts of the world the deal will affect results in health costs of $80. Now maybe the announcement is faulty or something, or medical care is effectively free, but that just doesn’t sound right.

  33. Blonde Wino says:

Jamie…every one cites Moody’s Analytical Pg.51 for the 12+ million job creation by 2016. That is 250K/month and less than Rmoney promised earlier (500K/month). And the Rmoney plan is to squash regulation on business and tax cuts get to those 12 million jobs.

I was only able to find one government document online on job creation from 2006- 2016. It was written in November 2007 minutes before the recession. It stated, job growth would slow from the previous time period of 1996 -- 2005, but by 2016 — 12. 2 — 12.9 million jobs will be created during the 2006 -2016 decade. A wild guess, I say, if the Congress lets us fly-off the fiscal cliff and we head to another recession…we will see more job losses.

Plus, most of the jobs created for the 12 million will be low-paying, benefit-poor jobs.

  38. Looking at the early morning discussion of Germany’s V-1 terror weapon, I decided to read the wiki on that weapon: buzzbomb

One of the things that they didn’t mention was the acute apprehension that set in when a V-1 ran out of fuel and the pulse jet stopped its ‘so long as the engine is running, we’re safe,’ buzzing. It was then that the V-1 became a ballistic missile destined to cause mayhem to whatever it struck.

To compare a ballistic munition to a ‘smart’ munition carried on _any_ of our aircraft, manned or unmanned, does not do justice to our efforts to minimize collateral damage and to use the least force possible in achieving lethal results against intended targets.

I did not make that post in the need to compare them, but just to show how we are killing innocents in large #’s….every tuesday someone (Obama) picks out targets from miles and miles away from the target areas……..killing babies while they are asleep….

Was going look up the numbers that have been killed be the drones etc….but decided not to.

XR, Plain to see that the lesser of two evils will be the answer to all things mentioned………

What did you think about what our CIA shits call a strike that kills these babies?……they call them “BUG-SPLATS”

That house is a war zone and every adult in that house knows it. If you take your child to the middle of a battle field who is to blame for your childs death.
There may be inocent children in that house but there are no innocent adults. The blood is on their hands.

  43. solarcrete says:

Well, that just means the the whole country is a war zone then. But where are they supposed to go?

Most times the soldiers just appear in the villages? The enemy chooses to hide in or near a village….a village that was never considered in the war zone…..until the war put them there.

We nuke em any-way…..the are what u call……Bug Splats, or collateral damage….

Yet another feedback not in the climate models, microbes turning Greenland “dark” every summer. :

A Japanese team in Greenland this summer. ……….

One surprising feature of the glacier was the reddish brown and gray stains on the icy surface. Some spots were black, like ink. The discolorations were caused by microbes living in the snow and ice………….. The Tokyo Institute of Technology and Chiba University have been observing cryoconites since the 1990s and have reported that they accelerate the speed at which ice melts.
Professor Nozomu Takeuchi of the Faculty of Science at Chiba University thought that “microbe populations may be growing in the polar regions due to warming,” so he analyzed past satellite imagery of Greenland.
He says the area covered by the blackish ice has been spreading inland from the coasts over the years.
“There’s no doubt the stains are from microbes. I think it’s only a matter of time before they cover the entire ice sheet,” said Takeuchi, who has visited the ice sheet. “Changes in the ecosystem on the ice could significantly alter the Earth’s environment.”

“That house is a war zone and every adult in that house knows it. If you take your child to the middle of a battle field” -Jack

That’s like saying if an adult lives in the inner city and can’t afford to get out, it’s their fault if their kids become victims of gang-violence.

Yes, the parents would bear some blame if they were actively engaged in activities prone to induce violence, but the house next door? Who’s to say? WHO’S TO SAY??

Ah, it’s a silly argument, I suppose. Mess with the bull you get the horns, simple as that.

  47. Katherine Graham Cracker says:

The first debate is on domestic issues -- divided into six topics 15 minutes each. Moderated by Jim Lehrer -- he says “no gotcha questions.” The format is the moderator asks a questions and gives each candidate 2 minutes to respond and the rest of the time is devoted to an exploration of the topic. Allegedly the topics have been announced for the segments

I don’t see this as a good format for Rmoney — it will further expose him as the shape shifter he is. Rmoney’s team needs one of the square boxes Shrub wore
during the debates so they can help him speak elegantly

If Obama can impersonate Bill Clinton -- he can do well
Obamarama’s team should take away his wristwatch, blackberry etc.

I don’t see a game changer except to make Mittens numbers lower

  48. Katherine Graham Cracker says:

    Ok
The first three questions will be on the economy,
Given what is going on…this cannot be good for Romney

The other three segments will focus on health care, the role of government, and governing. I think Mittens might want to be sick that day.

What can he possibly say that will not make him look like a complete idiot.

  49. Ignoble exChamp says:

I will say, though (and this isn’t directed to you or anyone else in particular, Jack), that if one is to espouse the “human-nature-bad-$%^&-happens” philosophy in a foreign policy/military context, then I don’t want to hear how higher ideals should be pursued in a civil/domestic context. If you’re going to be cynical, be consistent.

  50. Katherine Graham Cracker says:

There is always the nuanced answer to anything

  51. solarcrete says:

    Champ,

Not silly at all.! Not even in your example of gang violence.

With the drones; its not up an personal (obamas daughters, just like buses daughters should have gone to war, the senators, the congress sons and…first) up close….i can see if i should fire on a five year old with a weapon in his hand …and firing it, or trying to hide in the background; or from someplace in the states using a joy-stick…

About those gangs in the hoods; they are killing innocents all of the time.!

This is where we should declare all out war on the gangs.!! this is where we should send in the troops house by empty drug infested house, (the cia could and should be used to get these thugs imo) …….them all drugs….the hard ones only given by drs….or bartenders no.?

    later

  52. solarcrete says:

“.t all drugs….the hard ones only given by drs….or bartenders no.?”

Sorry, that should read: Legalize legal all drugs

  53. xrepublican says:

    Solar,

No, I don’t approve of killing non-combatants. Unfortunately, guerrillas, especially terrorists, seek safety in crowds of vulnerable people -- hospitals, schools, & apartment buildings. In most cases(so I read) the Predator operators prefer to attack the enemy when he is in a car, as opposed to when he is in a building that may also beoccupied by a dozen hostages. I hope what I read is true.

A CIA agent who uses ‘bugsplat’ as you describe denigrates humanity, dishonors the US, and sabotages the CIA mission, merely for the sake of showing off his wittiness or his appalling meanness.

Perhaps such a person day dreams that he is driving a snazzy car at high speed, harvesting insects with his windshield. Regardless, he deserves a job standing by the stoplight with a squirter and a squeegee.

  54. NEW THREAD: Mars rover finds ancient stream bed

  55. xrepublican says:

All the complaining about the Predators, becomes complaining about war.

Logical or illogical, concise or rambling, intuitive or based on hard data, it is all complaint about war.

And, it is all right. War sucks. I don’t know how to stop all of it, so I am resigned to some of it. It still sucks.
