I spent the afternoon playing with a nifty new toy from the US National Archives: A searchable online database of the 1940 census (mostly handwritten). Here are entries I found for both sets of my Kentucky grandparents, also listing my parents (James William Crawford and Tabitha Craig — although the census taker misspelled Mom’s name!):

1940 Census, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky

1940 Census, Mt. Vernon, Kentucky

    A Sunday Woo hoo.
I almost never get to woo hoo on Sunday. Wink

  2. jace says:

    Craig,

    That’s pretty cool.

They don’t take census like that now a days. Wink

    Craig:

I can see why you spent the afternoon doing this. It looks like a time-consuming process to find anything, unless you already know a lot of information, like street addresses of ancestors.

  4. jace says:

Question about census then and now.

Did they collect all the demographic information that they collect now or were they just trying to get an accurate count?

  5. Nash, the trick for looking up names is to go back to their 1930 database of searchable names, which can then be used to find the 1940 page someone is on. Their Help buttons explain it all fairly well.

  6. Jamie says:

Since I have access to the Ancestry databases, if anyone wants a look up done for any of the census years, I’ll be glad to do it.

For most searches, I just need names, probable state and approximate age and some sort of guesstimate as to who might be living in the household. The searching part is simple, the information above just helps me eliminate duplicates with similar names.

There’s all sorts of nosy info such as parents nationalities, job, financial info. I’ve been working with it for months

  7. Jace, if you look at any of the census forms on that Natl Archives site, they just collected the basics: age, occupation, education, etc. And the supplementary interviews (at the bottom of forms) only added a few categories, like military service

  8. jace says:

    Craig,

I am looking now. Wyoming, County Platte, Town Wheatland. Gonna’ be fun.

  9. jace says:

Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home. Wink

  10. Repugnents refuse to investigate The Repugnent Party in Virgina and The RNC for voter registration fraud.

This is the Party Of War Criminals, Sedition Traitors and Election Fraudsters.

    Have a great evening.

    Craig,

Would you like me to submit a correction on your mother’s name for future searchers?

  12. Jamie, that would be a hoot if you could do that, yes. Thanks. Will be interesting thing to monitor.

  13. Jamie says:

    Craig

Did you see the next door neighbors? Mary M. Craig widow living with her widowed daughter Sidney Lyon and her grandchildren? Sidney made about $16 a week as a Seamstress and WPA supervisor.

I’m actually having trouble finding the Crawford family you found in the handwritten images so whoever did the indexing may have made an error so I’ll have to back in to it through other means

  14. Ha, Jamie, you’re too much. Mary M. “Crawford” (not Craig) was my great grandmother on my Dad’s side. Mom and his grandmother were neighbors, how she and Dad met, as kids. Mary was called “Granny Crawford” btw, and quite the matriarch of the clan

  15. Jamie says:

Sorry got my Crawfords and Craigs c(r)onfused.

  16. Jamie says:

Since the indexes can be searched by name and then the original image pulled up, it is usually much faster than plowing through the images for a whole county. Everyone can just send me their info either here or by email at

I love all the talk re ancestry and have decided that if the election goes the way I expect, I will join Ancestry myself because I’ve gotta let this go

The articles by Glen Greenwald and Taylor Marsh were annoying to me because they were kinda shrill. I can’t disagree with any particular points, but I didn’t think they were informative or thought provoking. WasGreenwald angrier at DWS or the idea that mittymight have a hit list also? Why single her out if the problem is the hit list? The comments might be okay re her, but why include her -- just to bash the dnc?

As to having to go out of the us for meia coverage, I know someone who does just that, pores over the net for newpapers and commentators around the world.
He is smart, well-educated, and wonderful, but a year ago he announced that Iran had 3 or four atom bomb already. He also has said cheney is a good guy.
He was also upset a year ago because he had just learned about Jamie Garelicki. Remember her? She is beyond old news but he had just heard about her.
He also believes people like mitty are job creators and apparently thinks he will profit from mitty’s administration. God only knows what he digs into on hte net.

Taylor Marsh tells us it’s better to be non-partison.
And……..I hate mitty not because he’s a repug, but because he dismissed others. I have one litmus
test for my vote. Keep churches and religions out of government, which means I have to be pro-choice. I could accept probably most of mitty’s ideas, but the religious aspect rules him out of my book, as
well as almost the entire repub party. So I guess that makes me partisan, but I don’t feel bad about
it. My heart is breaking at the idea of our beautiful nation is about to go under the power of any religion.

It appears that willard has NC. That could change tomorrow night, if Flipper messes up on military affairs, because NC is a hotbed of Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coasties. Barring that somewhat unlikely possibility, I figure the bush 3.0 will get 206 votes in the electoral college.

Between now and election day, I see a backlash building in VA against the voter registration rip up Party. Expect grand jury investigations leading to indictments at the RNC, and a half dozen state ripper parties. Then it’s just a matter of applying RICOH…. HAHAHAHAHA

  23. Sturgeon…

I brought up the voting machines issue with the Presidents Campaign today so we’ll see if it gets any air time.

    Xrep.

See my two links about the AG of Virginia saying that they are not going to do any investigation into the Republican Party both National and State over the Voter Registration Fraud that the Republican Party has been involved in.

    Have a great evening.

  24. tony says:

Why single her out if the problem is the hit list? The comments might be okay re her, but why include her — just to bash the dnc?

    Bethy,
I don’t know why they singled Debbie out but I specifically singled her out because she should have answered the damn question. Instead all we got from the head of the DNC is more rah rah, go Dems, yah that’s her job, well one of her jobs as she is a congress woman. Debbie was insulting and is part of the problem.. When it was GWB doing the torturing and killing the Dems thought it was terrible and now all of a sudden its a Dem president so its swept under the rug. Drone attacks kill many innocents and create more people who hate us.. I expected better from the Democratic Party, guess its a good thing i’m no longer a Dem..

  25. jace says:

    Bethy,

What you need to understand is that the DNC is a joke and a waste.
On those rare occasions when anyone pays any attention to them they could at least try to be relevant.
DWS dropped the ball, which is all to common for the DNC.

The RNC along with Romney and the associated Superpacs have made what should have been a blow out election in favor of Obama, too close too call, and the DNC has not even been on the radar.

Every two years, about 60 days prior to election the DNC wakes up and pretends to be a legitimate party structure.

Dr. Dean had the right idea, but he made too much sense for democrats.

In the meantime, the RNC thrives and the DNC trembles.

  26. bethyboo says:

Jace and Tony, I know about the dnc and that’s why I’ve been an independent for over 20 years.

I originally noted the peaceful beginning today and
felt bad about the broken mood. Sorry for the super
long boring post. The articles just annoyed me and I needed to vent.

  27. xrepublican says:

“…what should have been a blow out election in favor of Obama….” Jace, above.

You startled me, Jace. I was just thinking of all the pundits who as late as last February said Obama could not win re-election.

Obama wins 332 -- 206 in the election that really counts. I understand that the rippers have and shall commit massive fraud, but I also think the opinion polls have massively under-reached America’s under caste who don’t have regular phone service, but tend to use . This underestimation did not made the pollsters look bad in previous elections because the undercaste voted in small numbers. However, in ’08 and ’12 a black man on the ticket, and that makes an enormous difference.

  28. xrepublican says:

Bethyboo, there’s no reason to apologize. I happily read your ‘super long post’. That was a fine vent.

Talking with republicans is a little like eating beans, pretty soon you have to let it out, and sometimes it just escapes while everyone happens to be in the room and looking at you.

The pong posts fatuous assertions here. I read them and promptly develop academic gas, which I expel here on the Trail. I give him the raspberries.

    G’night Bethyboo.
    G’night Dexter.

Cousin Laura here--Laura Crawford LaRue. Byron’s daughter. Liked seeing family names on the site--dad’s was last--Byron D. (Douglas). Just found out interesting fact. Dad was born at home and was raised thinking his birthday was 9/29. When he he was drafted and accepted to OCS, his birth certificate said 9/27, which he did not fight due to a delay in joining his class. Dad says Nana told him the doctor had the date wrong by 2 days!

Still in KY and work in politics. I am a professional campaign treasurer, compliance consultant and have been for over 20 years. 3 Governor’s races, multiple congressional races. Currently with Brett Guthrie (KY02)

Last saw you when I wad 9. We played chess at your house in Orlando. Last saw your Dad at Aunt Jeanie’s funeral. Uncle Jack has all the family research.
