jamiecakeThere are so many special friends who have nurtured our corner of the “internets,” but none work harder than Jamie perpetuating our community. And it’s her birthday weekend. Time to take a collective moment and give her a huge thank you. For me, there were times I was about ready to give up on this enterprise but for Jamie’s fierce determination. I’ve never given another thought to abandonment thanks to the abiding hope and dedication to civil discourse that Jamie never EVER abandons. Love ya gal, always will.

“Wanted Dead and Alive Schrodinger’s Cat”
I couldn’t stop laughing at the sight
Thanks again my precious Jamie White.

Told stories and shared many tales
Of happy times and some stormy gales
Looked into our hearts and shed a tear
We’ve been friends for many a year

I look at Craig’s praise and bright acclaim
He speaks for me, since I feel the same
There’s only one thing left for me to do
And wish you a Happy Birthday too.

For those folk who like to be a bit adventurous with your music, perhaps you might like to explore the Tizita, sort of the Amharic blues music from Ethiopia. I have been absolutely in love with Aster Aweke, born in 1959 in Gondar, Ethiopia. Saw her in Melbourne last year but you lucky folks have her living in the US of A so have access to her live performances all the time.

Here is Aster’s Tizita. Get into the moment an it is hard not to be moved by this piece.

Or perhaps some really incredible Zulu music composed, sung and choreographed by that musical genius Mphatheni Khumalo aka Mfaz’ Omnyama who sadly died in 2001.

Khula Tshitshi Lami is just one of those incredibly energetic performances where even the most languid joints begin to dance in tune to the harmony.

  5. Bill Woerlee says:

And that’s it for me tonight.

So congress skipped town? Could we not impose a congressional lockout. Close down the buildings close down the airports and blame it on sequester.

jace, in keeping with the conclave going on in rome, how about locking the congress critters in chambers until they come up with a viable solution? maybe for the signal as to the progress (a la white or black smoke) hoist from the flag pole either cantor’s shorts or pelosi’s panties… boehner’s were burned sometime ago.

  7. ct says:

Happy belated birthday Jamie. You are quite a talented and creative creature.

Jamie, isn’t it amazing that when we look at how old we are, we definitely can tell that we are starting to look it or have been for a while or even look older. I’m scared of mirrors. That isn’t the amazing part. The amazing part is that we still often think of ourselves as youngsters. I hate it that my body forces me every day to realize that I’m not anymore.

When I’m reading here, and not looking at any pics or don’t have any to look at, I think of you all as youngsters. You do have the wisdom that comes with age but you all still sound young.

  22. RebelliousRenee says:

    Jamie… you’re the best!

May the bird of paradise not fly up your nose…
    Happy, happy birthday!

  23. RebelliousRenee says:

Well…. here I am… once again in the wild and wooly northern mountains of NH. I’m looking out at the ski area as I type this. The sun is shining and later it will be a balmy 42 degrees. And up here at this time of year, that definitely qualifies as HOT. It means Rick will be experiencing spring skiing even though it’s a tad early for such. Hot tubbing will come tomorrow.

  24. xrepublican says:

    Happy Birthday, Jamie!

  25. Faire says:

In Knobite Corner, seventeen days before the equinox, we’ve had several straight days with the temp locked at 38 degrees for a high and intermittent snow showers. And it’s not even time yet for dogwood winter or the Easter squall--

Wishing a belated Happy Birthday to Jamie.

In the era of Industrial Capitalism, FDR and Keynes could serve the interest of the Capitalist and the workers at the same time. In today’s world the Wall Street game plan is to loot as much as possible while it is still possible. The greed of the elite can not be stopped easily!

Obama and GOP Shared Austerity Vision Will Deepen Recession
By Yves Smith, Naked Capitalism, March 2, 2013

This Real News Network interview with Professor Dr. Heiner Flassbeck of Hamburg University (recently with UNCTAD) provides a cogent overview of why the impact of the sequester and any budget deal will be to weaken an already-struggling economy. I personally enjoy Flassbeck; he’s articulate and manages to get more information into his interviews than most of experts while keeping his remarks accessible to a broad audience.

Dr. Heiner Flassbeck: The massive sequester cuts to government spending are a disaster -- what’s needed is a wage led recovery.

The panicked selling and fear mongering that Obama and his surrogates are engaging in is reaching the level of stupidity like Rep. Maxine Waters, D-CA., predicting 170 million jobs would be lost with sequestration. The entire civilian labor force is only about 155 million. What is she thinking? OH she doesn’t!

  27. sturgeone says:

The pump don’t work ’cause the vandals took the handle.

Look out, Kid, it’s something you did. God knows when but you’re doing it again.

  28. Bill Woerlee says:

All this GOP and Dem posturing over the sequester reminds me of a set of traditional Maltese minstrels singing their għana. Each singer has to make a verse praising Malta (Valleta in particular) and the next has to compose a response, then a response to that response and so on. The competition is lost when a singer can’t compose a reply. There are a number of standard verses that can be used when the well runs dry and gives the singer time to compose a new verse.

That is the public għana. Go to a cheap wine bar and they partake in a different style of għana -- that is to think of the worst insults possible about the other singers. Same rules apply as with the public version. Heaps of wine, plenty of good humour and a għanafest can be a great evening’s entertainment for it is all in good fun.

The US style politics is nothing more than a wine bar għanafest but for real. So it is ugly.

For the more gentle souls, here is a public version of a għana.

  29. xrepublican says:

Sequester could be worse. Could be better. rippers dissemble that it is no big thing; won’t hurt poor folks. Then they turn around and shriek that the military is being starved into collapse. These conmen and neoconmen can’t tell the truth about a dam’ thing and can’t seem to get their stories straight.

The thing is, the burden of the cuts shouldn’t be on poor folks, cities, educatiuon, or environmental work. The burden should be on Big Oil, Big Tobacco, Big Coal, and Big Sugar -- busineses that harm our future.

  31. xrepublican says:

Speaking of Ghana (HAHAHA) last night we chatted with an old friend who works for a company in Burundi, and is home on vacation. She says that the changes occuring around Africa because of the internet communication revolution and other technology is dramatic, profound, and universal. She thinks the continent is moving towarda better future at a fast rate, and that the ‘news’ we see about Africa in the mainspring mouija ignores how most Africans actually live.

I already miss seeing Goddard’s Political Wire on the sidebar.

  33. ct says:

That movie may be a little too close for comfort. I recently ran across a website, http://www.drugawareness.org/

Jamie, the Gamecocks Women’s Basketball Team whooped the Gators in the closing regular season game of the year. I dedicate the game and the season to you. Happy Birthday, girl!

  37. xrepublican says:

I’ll dedicate the Women Hockey Gophers 8-0 victory over Bemidji State to Jamie. The team is 36-0 so far this year, smashing the old NCAA record by 10 games. Nothing like them ever was…just like Jamie.

  38. coloradobob says:

    Dear Jamie -
You deserve every kind word written here. As a birthday gift, the sand hill cranes took off for Canada today. Huge flocks flying East of North. All of them singing like crazy .

  39. xrepublican says:

Now comes Xrepublican respectfully before the worlds great experts, here gathered, and asks an important question. I

f a man who washes clothes is a landerer, and a woman who does the same is a laundress, and if a woman flyer is an aviatrix and a man who flies is an aviator,

then what does one call a female Hoosier, a Hoosierix, a Hoosieux, a Hoosiess ?

    Inquiring minds want to know.
