Beyond the Box: Solar Roads
Here at Trail Mix we like to think outside the box now and then. Introducing a new category: Beyond the Box. Where we mull over ideas, inventions, trends and issues not on the radar.
What about Solar Roads? Since the Romans, the road has been constantly updated, expanded and re-invented to evolve transportation. Here’s a way to use roads as power generators.
An outfit called Solar Roadways is on the case. Roads, parking lots, sidewalks bake in the Sun every day. What if the heat and light they collect could be harnessed?
Replace concrete or asphalt with solar cells beneath a layer of sturdy glass, construct a roadway surface with the resulting panels. Store the energy collected and you’ve got one heck of an electric grid.

I like the stop signs that began appearing a couple years ago. A solar collector stores energy , and when the sun goes down, critical stop signs are ringed by bright flashing LED bulbs.
http://www.crosswalks.com/images/ActiveStop,3IPM.jpg
renee, before we move on to the sunny brave new world, you should be applauded for reminding us of the murky cowardly old one we exist in:
*the name helen thomas ring a bell?
not only solar energy producing roads, but why not require all buildings constructed from here on be topped with solar roofing or panels, and autos like the hydrogen one whose byproducts are water and electricity as well as transportation. or just mandate white roofs for starters.
and how bout a good word for construction that reduces energy consumption like solarcrete the wall system
Both of you are right there Patd. I’m not a Catholic, kinda tried, and opted out but I don’t feel good about all the Pope bashing. I have a good feeling about the guy. I feel that there’s something different. We can’t expect total reversal of everything that’s been. It is an old religion after all with a lot of crappy history. Always like how the Catholics revered Mary. They actually pray to a woman. I’m really fond of her also.
Maybe it’s just a new attitude I’m trying on, also one that Renee suggested a while back. It won’t last long.
I like the solar roads idea. I’m wondering if the asphalt in front of my camp might power it up. It’s so hot in the summer that when I go to walk my Maggie out there, I feel like I need to find her some shoes. Actually, it gets hot any time the sun shines.
It never made sense to me that a religion that did so much praying to a woman would be the one that tried so hard to exclude them.
The Pope, wearing a fabulous vintage chiffon-lined Dior gold lame gown over a silk Vera Wang empire waist tulle cocktail dress, accessorized with a three-foot House of Whoville hat and the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in the Wizard of Oz, on his way to tell us it’s Wrong to be Gay.
Post from some guy on facebook.
Ok, from where the sun now stands I will Pope-bash no more forever. Probably.
But I still think he should have become Pope Francis Albert.
as Corey said on Twitter: “My funny vatican…….sweet comic vatican…….
Dex,
I wonder how many people ran into that building before they solar-ized that stop sign you linked (first thing I thought of). They usually don’t come up with an idea like that until all else fails.
I’ve been noticing more and more solar lights here at train tracks, sharp curves in the road and all kinds of places where I’m sure there have been many accidents first (it’s as though people don’t use their head lights) — I’m sure those lights have saved lots of accidents and lives too.
Patd,
Some great ideas you posted.
I’ve been wanting to get a solar panel on our roof for the hot water heater. We put one on our roof in Ca. many years ago…. it worked great and saved us a considerable amount of money (electricity was really expensive there as well as water… everything in Ca. was more expensive… many things cost more there 20 years ago than they do here even now). Especially utilities and permits.
Solar,
I hope we hear from you on this ‘Solar’ thread… will be disappointed if we don’t.
You notice Pat mentioned your solarcrete panels above. When it comes to Solar, you the man.
Great post, Craig.
Champ,
Forget the Cookies! We want to know what makes you tick.
In one of my free association ponders, I was thinking that this Pope chose to take the name of St Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment. Both are being threatened by over population of humans. Both contraception and gay marriage do there part to slow that over population problem. If the Pope hasn’t already put two and two together, I’d like to send that suggestion. Changing their stance on abortion may be pushing the envelope just a tad.
I thought with the exit of Dr. Chu, we might see a better energy policy…Enrie Moniz, Obama’s nominee, is a ‘NUKLAR’ guy. Forget solar, we can radiate humans at home.
Now the Department of Energy is looking for mini-nuclear reactor development. Forget fuel generators during energy shutdowns…we will all have home reactors!
Obama’s energy stance is disappointing and will cost us much money and misery until he see the errors of his ways. He is very short sighted…no vision when it comes to energy.
Meanwhile, solar projects are in the toilet at the department of energy.
Will those in toilet projects help keep it clean?
I guess they can design a solar flush, CT.
It is disappointing to me that we keep chasing dirty energy. Many small projects that can bring energy to rural areas are never considered and no funding is available. The Bush presidency saw more grants, funding, etc. from the DOE.
The solar sidewalks will save in shoveling, adding toxic salts to the environment…plus it is solar…no need for a nuclear reactor under the sidewalk! Geez…keep it simple.
That solar flush would be most welcome on a Carnival Cruise!
Not a lot of sun in the bathroom but maybe they can use the heat from our butt cheeks to power it.
CT, are you speaking of the place ‘where the sun doesn’t shine?
Speaking of asses, Renee suggested that I avoid negativity but didn’t mention avoiding being a smart ass. That’s not negative, is it?
Cruise ship plumbing.
With all that sun…perhaps, several back-up solar generators to pump and dump (flush) the ‘treated’ Blackwater (not to be confused with the Crusade Army) into the ocean, can be employed.
It is hard to shake the mantle of a Negator, CT, but I think you are bringing sunshine to a very dark topic!
Solar roads?
random thoughts.
yeah, like there aren’t enough orange barrels in the summer time as it is.
I wonder what the traction is like with snow on a glass road or just a wet one?
I have never liked the idea of using the roof for water heating and for making electricity. In the long run the natural degradation in the roof itself along with the added ‘utilities’ systems can make the the total maintenance cost shockingly high; especially when each component will fail on its own good time.
I would rather have ‘plug ‘n play’ panels inserted in place of portions of the siding that can easily be accessed from ground level. I understand that this will require installation on more than one side of the house to accommodate our fickle sun, but that will still be more friendly than a roof top installation.
I think installing solar stuff under roads will be an incredibly costly failure. Roads aren’t monolithic structures; they’re like a bunch of dominoes end on end. When water encroaches between the dominoes, the road starts self destructing. The solar stuff will self destruct along with the pavement.
I think a much less expensive approach is to install the solar stuff in the green space that is supposed to parallel every modern expressway.
Well, Flatus, I think they should design elevated high speed, solar trains in the green space next to the highways. Who needs gasoline?
amen
bw, the prez seems to agree with your freedom from gasoline crusade contrary to your 8:58 post “Obama’s energy stance is disappointing and will cost us much money and misery until he see the errors of his ways. He is very short sighted…no vision when it comes to energy. ”
“Rob Portman Reverses Gay Marriage Stance After Son Comes Out”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/15/rob-portman-gay-marriage_n_2881805.html
You would think they would be a little ashamed to be so self serving. NOT
flatus, what about the new solar roof tiles that replace the old-fashion shingles? a twofer so to speak.
Thank you, patd. Obama needs to tell that to ‘the powers that be over at the DOE’. The current funding monies are for mini nuclear. How about some money for fuel cell technology?
Maybe we should have another Bill Richardson running the DOE…he may not have been a scientist, but he knew how energy affects humans. We need that kind of a human running the direction of our national energy policy. It has been piss poor under Obama.
Today you can purchase on Amazon, hydrogen fuel cells. Along with solar technology, fuel cell technology is also very promising. The DOE is pushing mini-reactors!
Amazon also sells those cool Oakley fuel cell sunglasses.
Obama highlighted the Allen Bros.during the 2011 SOTU for their solar shingles.
They are still in business!
http://allenbrothersinc.com/
If someone can invent solar pot-holes, Pennsylvania will be the world’s energy leader!
Have a good weekend, preferably with a moderate amount of direct solar radiation.
Pat,
My shingles, a Consumer Reports check marked item from about ten years ago, have a fifty year warranty with non-prorated parts and labor. It is transferable one time. The corporation backing it is GAF.
Find me any rooftop solar solution with an equivalent warranty from a major industry leader, and I’ll install it. Otherwise I’d rather have an installation that doesn’t risk compromising the watertight integrity of the roof over my head.
I do have a complaint with my solar dryer. The bath towels become board hard and are never perfectly rectangular again! I am drying with rough parallegrams of cotton.
I use hand towels in place of bath towels: it’s like 1/4 of the laundry burden.
Actually, Iggy, I do the same. But, hubby is a bath towel guy. To save on washing and drying, I also use one towel for drying my hair…for a week. I figure, my hair is ‘clean,’ why the over washing?
Gee, I wonder who’s on laundry duty at your house…
Peace out, for realz this time.
BW
Perhaps a sheet of Arm & Hammer fabric softener in the rinse water might help. It’s _very_ low cost.
Iggy, I grew-up in Pennsylvania. Born in Allentown (I think you are in Scranton?). Just like Florida, we have a lot of sink holes, too. An when Flatus mentioned all the oolitic limestone, I remembered pot holes turning into large sink holes and swallowing cars on Pennsylvania streets. The poor guy who lost is life in Florida when his bed was consumed by a sink hole…was one of my first childhood fears. Being gobbled-up by a sink hole!
There also is still a part of the hard coal country in Pennsylvania that is burning underground and has been for some time.
Senator Portman doesn’t have a clue. He thinks his position is enlightened
Flatus…if you use dryer sheets and fabric softener on cotton towels, it affects the absorption of the towel. Not as affective in drying. No kidding.
CT…you are correct about Portman. He won’t get ‘Father of the Year’. But, he joins a long list of politicians who sanitize their family by hiding babies, polygamy, insanity and homosexuality in order to run for office. John Edwards comes to mind.
I am very cynical about our current energy policy…the big, established guys get the money for the projects. Not much for the little guy and we need a bunch of little guy projects because our energy access and demands are so divergent across the country.
I firmly believe it has to come from government to the little guy as the large corporations sit on their money. Very little re-invested in changing the status quo for them. No money in it and if they see a little guy with a great idea, they will absorb the company.
I live in a relatively rural area and there are a many small energy ideas that would work within a small area. I wish I could have a wind and solar devices that feed into a large, residential fuel cell right on my property. All the technology is there, but the investment, refinement and the laws need to arrive sooner!
My Christmas Amaryllis finally bloomed.
Chloe,
I had a long post about this thread, but it was erased, when I refreshed…third time this has happened…I know that i should copy, or open another window, but……will redo it later on…
Carol, The history of the Papacy has been one that has been very, very evil up until now, and nothing has changed……..they just have their hands tied by people that can read and write now……..but if they could, they would kill all of those that did not agree with them……the pope would be the first one drinking their blood at the alter…..frigin parasitical vampires is what all religions are…
Blonde,
Re: Missionaries: When I think about all of the deaths that they are responsible for……..the term:
“with friends like you, I don’t need any enemies” comes from….they are religious “kamikazes” on a mission.
I think BW and Flatus are very smart.
Guess who didn’t learn anything from the election Mittens on CPac
the first step is to recognize which policies caused the problems we face today…GOOPER policies
Solar, I think it’s unfair to generalize to “all religion” and all Popes. Just MHO. I think some of your hatred MIGHT, stress on the word might, come from how religion influenced your parents and their abuse of you. Now, I’m jumping behind my couch so you can fire away.
Chloe,
A cpl of years ago we had extensive talks, threads about what and how the government, specially Obama could do to get the economy going for the middle class (he chose not to)
I suggested that he should do just what that link that…..Patd…..had about Solarcrete. It is the most energy efficient, the single most thing that we can do to save $, this would have had an immediate results:
We have trained a lot of people that would have start up corps…the size that would employ 6-12 worker, a huge amount of new corps that would get us going.
Add to that: The fact that these homes would be about 70-80% energy efficient…means that all homes using this would have $ to spend on other things that would get the economy going also…and still would.
These homes, and warehouse don’t use any foundation walls, they get a solar panel that us used from the footing of a house, and can be used as high as 4 story’s…..no, no not those stories….(tell u one of them later on, eh, eh,)….pay attention.
A solarcrete panel is 2-1/2 inches of concrete on one side, then 8 inches of foam, then another 2-1/2 inches of concrete on the other side.
This will reduce your energy bills be 70-80%. In the winter time your heating bill could be as low as 50.00 for a 3000 sq home…or your air conditioning bill as well…
When you go and get a cup of coffee from burger king or some place…they give it to you in a foam cup, a very thin cup, and you are not burned. Imagine an 8 inch wall with 5 inches of concrete…..and you have the effect of a cave…..below frost line, the earth keeps that cave just right…..like me, just right (there i told you the one about the two bears and me, ok)
These wall panels have built in areas for electric and plumbing…comes with it….all they need if for a licensed contractor to hook them up…simple, very simple and would not cost very much to build them.
They can be installed underneath the roof or as sheathing on the would side of existing homes…they would require an airconditioning unit that is made just for these homes…..plus they could also me molded into any shape that you wanted to on the exterior…
Chloe, Chloe, WAKE up……last time i tell you a bed time story……later
PATD,
Love U, thanks for remembering about the ole solar greek……..wanna do the Zorba with me???
Solar, sorry you had trouble posting. Don’t see anything of yours in the spam bin so don’t know what could have happened.
And Solar, just remember, sticks and stones will break my bones but words will only hurt me for a few days.
Actually, if you throw a pillow at me real hard, that will break my bones also.
I agree with Flatus’ 10:31 AM comment. Way too costly to maintain and very costly to build. Jack has a great point on his 10:14 comment, snow and rain on a glass road? Slip and slide. In order to maintain solar efficiency you could not score the glass for traction and you will need to keep it clean and free from abrasions. On a road?
Rob Portman is so republican — An honest statement would have been. “I still hate gay people but I love my son so I’m changing my public position although every chance I got I voted against gay rights including the recent vote on the violence against women.”
Kind of like Prick Cheney..and if I had showtime I would cancel it for having a reality show on Prick Cheney so he can attempt to rehab himself with no one asking any hard questions. What pile of poop
The primary goal of any Economic Model should be a prosperity which is shared by everyone. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher promised that the privatization of public resources and the deregulation of capitalism would lead to greater shared prosperity for everyone. History has shown they were very wrong.
Annual average percentage increase in income to the Top 1% (13.3%) and especially the Top 0.01% (29.5%) reached a peak during the period from 1981 through 1986. The Bottom 90% (0.4%) was at their worst during the same period. So much for the concept of greater shared prosperity for everyone from Reagan and Thatcher.
The period from 1949 to 1973 was the best for the Bottom 90% at a modest annual average percentage increase in income of 4.1%. The Top 1% (2.2%) and the Top 0.01% (2.0%) had limited growth during the same period.
The Keynesian Economic Model, while far from perfect, has shown far better results than Ronald Reagan’s Voodoo supply-side, trickle-down, bull manure spreading “tax cuts increase government revenue” economic model.
Keynesian Economic Tradition argues that during economic downturns, including recessions, the government should replace the drop in private sector spending with deficit spending that includes increased public spending and tax reductions to save jobs and reduce economic decline. During economic prosperity the government pays off the deficit with decreased public spending and tax increases.
Democrats have a major problem with the decreased public spending.
Republicans have a major problem with the tax increases and, during the Reagan and both Bush Administrations, public spending reductions.
Therefore the Keynesian Economic Model is never followed to its proper conclusion.
Carol,
My, Hatered of all Religions it b/c they deserve it……get a few books about the popes…how they killed, whole towns of innocents that weren’t in their line of thinking…….
My “parents” are another thing…im very able to tell them both apart….but they are influenced by the whole of what religion tells them to think and act upon.
The reason that there are so many religions…new ones….is that there are so many people with a need to believe in something….but they can’t go by the old ones…….read the books that are out there….
Sam harries , richard dawkins to name a cple…….even read the bible, it has all the hate in the world in it…..don’t take me word for it…..go to Deuteronomy 7 or 11….see if it doesn’t say that u should kill your own mother, father, sister, or brother……….this the popes take literally…..at least they used too…..
Also read about the 222 books that weren’t allowed in the bible…….a very violent set of instructions……
The reason that I love the devil so much……is that there is not one thing that can be pointed out that is evil about him…not one thing….God gets credit for all things….specially when he makes a miracle happen when a sole survivor of a plane, or car crash happens…..a miracle……what happened to the other 200 people in the air plane………God killed them.!
I stopped blaming my parents when I became interested on how they became such good catholic s……I love reading, learning about how, and why happens…..like why we love thinking that there is a god…….the human need to believe in something, the endless need for knowledge in order for our organisms to survive, the brain created spirituality…
Man-kinds greed invented religion….so how can i hate them….I love them b/c I have forgiven myself, therefor forgiven them….but I still want to know how this all happened….think that im kinda close to it all.
In evolutions time clock….we are but a few second….we are very much Animals yet….other animals in the past have preyed on us….but there are still animals of pry that we should all watch out for….one of them is the Pope-anthrisulas….a blood sucker that won’t rest until we all go to heaven…….
In addition to needing strength, this glass will be textured to allow tires to grip and water to run off. It will also be embedded with heating elements—like a car’s rear windshield—to melt snow or ice. And it will need to be self-cleaning, coping with the grit and grime of an endless procession of tires as well as dust, dirt and other highway detritus. Needless to say, such glass does not exist yet but Brusaw hopes to partner with researchers at The Pennsylvania State University’s Materials Research Institute to develop it. read more from Scientific American
too often we look for reasons NOT to do something --The Republican’t way instead of making the investment in our future
Possibly one of the worst transit decisions ever was not to bring BART to the North Bay — dumb dumb dumb
Solar, I have and have read some books with some scary stuff about what Popes and Catholics have done in history. I also have books about the origin of Christianity, Bible, and books on the Gnostic Gospels. I really like some of the Gnostic Gospels. I really got interested in all that after reading the Da Vinci Code.
Solar Roadways site addresses many of the practical questions raised here on their FAQ page
Criag,
not too worry, but it only happen now when I refresh…..
About Solar roads….only if they can do it from the bottom….just like when I did some drive ways….use of heat can disolve the snow…..but it is not cheap to install…..same thing for basement in homes…they are not cheap…..and you have to know exactly how to do it.! Could wind up breaking it while pouring concreted over it…….
Once again…..if we want to have a big difference in energy savings….use solar panels on all new homes……get $ to train people that want to start their own business and give them the cash to get them going:
Once again….I have 200 plus many more lots that I can get,….get a qualified home owner in them….get 35% down payment from the government…….but I can’t get the banks to give them a loan for the remaining amount….not much….about 100K
In the future….we will be building, doing things with the power of air…….buildings with air-beams…instead of steel beams…..cities will tower to the skies, farms will be in each tower, there will be no need to go outside of our own tower…it will have everything that we need…..work, school and play.
Talk about tribal…….
Carol,
There is one book that I would think that a person like you would love…..
Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches……..this is a must read for anyone that wants to know about other cultlurs….for instance…..
What we think we know about why Indians….no not us indians…the ones from India….why they don’t eat their cattle…and makes us scratch our heads…
Why the Jews and Muslims don’t eat Pig meat….not what people think…but what religious high class rollers do eat…..
How in the times of Jesus…there was so much violence….that it was impossible for a peacful messiah to have existed…..before he was born, and after her was dead…….many, many messaihs….were bloody violent……even today…take a look at netanhaooo…….
Craig,
Just thinking about a solar road:
I never have before, but just off the top…I would run a line of solar panles….lets say from north to south…that would be the main line…in the center of the road where there would be not traffic…and would be protected from the elements…and transparent like….
then they would branch off like our sewer system does……I do think that highly trained minds can come up with something….but how are they going to get the Money for it……
I can see this happening: The government will give some Halliburton, or the dem equivalence the money to do it….then they will charge us for using the them………they do that now….private corps charge tolls up and down il……
Will have to put that on my list Solar. Right now I’m doing a study of Jung’s Red Book. That may take a while.
don’t=do highly trained minds……later talking way too much again.
Sunshine is all well and good, but how about water. Our friend CBob has built both a solar cooker now resident in Haiti, but has built an Australian water reclamation fence in order to water Peggy Chapman’s garden. In addition, he has provided a resting place for migrating Monarchs not to mention all those Shelter Box tents erected over suffering heads.
This wonderful place does good things because we all act together. http://peggychapmansgarden.blogspot.com/#.UUMfmoiqYqs.twitter
solar, maybe on top of jersey wall concrete barriers?

Center for Action and Contemplation – Father Richard Rohr’s Daily Meditation “The Feminine Face of God ‘Foundation’” for Friday, March 15, 2013

Richard’s Daily Meditations
Seven Underlying Themes of Richard Rohr’s Teachings
Second Theme: If God is Trinity and Jesus is the face of God, then it is a benevolent universe. God is not someone to be afraid of, but is the Ground of Being and on our side (Foundation).
“The Feminine Face of God”
Meditation 20 of 52
All this women-stuff is not only important; it is half of conversion, half of salvation, half of wholeness, half of God’s work of art. I believe this mystery is imaged in the woman of the twelfth chapter of the Apocalypse: pregnant, and in labor, crying aloud in the pangs of childbirth . . . and finally escaping into the desert until her time (Revelation 12: 1 A great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2 She was with child. She cried out in pain, laboring to give birth. 3 Another sign was seen in heaven. Behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven crowns. 4 His tail drew one third of the stars of the sky, and threw them to the earth. The dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. Her child was caught up to God, and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that there they may nourish her one thousand two hundred sixty days).
Could this be the time? The world is tired of Pentagons and pyramids, prelates and princes, empires and corporations that only abort God’s child. This women-stuff is very important, and it has always been important, more than this white male priest ever imagined or desired! My God was too small and too male in the first half of my life. It kept me from the deeper mystical path.
Much that many feminists have said is very prophetic and necessary for the Church and the world. It is time for the woman to come out of her desert refuge and for the men to welcome her. As we see in the churches today. This is still quite difficult if you have been an alpha male all of your life. No surprise that Jesus came meek and humble of heart (Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls) to undo the male addiction to power and performance. Mary is the standing archetype of how the gift of God is received. One almost wonders if the Roman and Orthodox churches do not worship Mary to avoid actually following her on her oh-so-natural and simple path. Adapted from Radical Grace: Daily Meditations, p. 279, Day 290
Simple credos require no inflated justification as is procured by established and not so established religions or beliefs. So here is the encapsulation of my belief in God stated beautifully by Stephen F Roberts:
And a moral code.
This story from the Babylonian Tamuld, Shabbat 31a illustrates my sentiments to the “T”.
A potential convert visited Rabbi Shammai and asked him explain Judaism whilst standing on one leg. Shammai took umbrage and belted the applicant and chased the man out of his house with a measuring stick. The potential convert went to Rabbi Hillel and asked the same question citing the same conditions. On one leg Hillel said:
Then: “All the rest is commentary. Go and learn.”
Like I said, pretty darned simple. Even I can understand it.
And Carol, your little quote hit the nerve, especially when they lecture me about the face of God.
To those determined to tell me about God, I quote Victor Hugo:
I see the face of God every day.
And talking about the face of God, here are two faces of God. Pic taken last night at our favourite Italian Restaurant, La Dolce Vita, the occasion being a family dinner for her indoors birthday. She is turning 21 but taking her darned good time to get there. It was a great night shared by all our family -- just the right thing for an Italian Restaurant. Nonna and nonno, bambini and nipoti, all round Papa’s big table with plenty of food and laughter.
Our two faces of God are examining a 5kg jar of Nutella, something right out of their experience. This restaurant serves a pizza coated with Nutella.
Just for the fun of it all I stepped off a curb caught my heel, fell and sprained my ankle. I may be semi missing depending on ability to type while elevating appendage.
Precious Bill!
And Happy Birthday Ms Indoors.
St Paddy’s Day craic will be interesting this year for us. We’ll have our Japanese love child joining us for the traditional green beer and Guinness. I have the green leprechaun hat replete with beard for her so the pix will be **interesting**.
“To love another person is to see the face of God.”
Exactly.!! Been saying it for years. We are god, and that is the biggest taboo out there:
“The Book on the taboo Against knowing who you are”
This is it,
and I am it,
and you are it,
and so is that,
and he is it,
and it is it,
and that is that.!
Carol, in one of the books that were left out of the Bible….it talks about another person named Simon, I believe…he was said to have been crucified before Jesus, in a town not far away from where jesus was born…….
So Jamie, does that mean you are going to be curb crawling in future?
That’s no excuse Jamie. I’ve typed through all my breakage. Sometimes it’s with my thumbs on my iPhone.
Forgot: he was supposed to have risen on the third day also…….me thinks that a lot of Greek Mythology started many, many myths that are still thought as truisms……
Ever read the Gospel of Mary Solar?
“We are God” Solar, I believe that.
I heard something from Rick’s lips tonight that I never thought I’d ever hear. We were watching the weather forecast on the local news. We are expecting another plowable snowstorm for late Monday into Tuesday. Rick said “Christ.. we have enough snow already… there’s plenty for the ski areas to make it through the season”.
You could’ve knocked me over with a feather…
Solar, sounds like you’ve been beaten around the head by ‘ligion. Her indoors and her best friend were both given up to the helping hands of the good nuns from the Sisters of Mercy when they were children -- through circumstances which were underlain by poverty. They are both damaged goods through the merciful ministrations of those hellions. “Sisters of Mercy” proves to be an oxymoron.
On the other hand, I have no such stories because my folks were religiously lazy and so I have no idea of their beliefs. But that also meant that none of this dross was shoveled into me as a child. Bless you mum and dad. Laziness does have its rewards.
Oh no, Jamie… so sorry….
but then… maybe the universe is trying to tell you that it’s time for flat shoes…
Carol, I have passed on your good wishes to her indoors and the response was, and I shall pass it onto you:
SMOOOCH!
And on a really high note, a good friend of mine was awarded the Knight’s Cross from the Magyar Köztársasági Érdemrend, or the Hungarian Order of Merit, Knight’s Cross class for his work in Hungarian and Turkish relations. Tosun has been a good friend of mine for many years -- we have done quite a bit of work together on building up the Turkish Australian story. Tosun has written quite a few books on the Hungarian and Turkish traditions. A well deserved award.
This pic shows him at the award ceremony. He is the fellow on the right of the pic.
And for you who are on the road who need a code to live by.
See you all on the dark side.
Sorry Jaime — hope it heals quickly.
Oh god, Jamie, so sorry! Hope all is well soon..
Bill,
Your amazing!
Lovely posts.. My on my next trip to OZ i would so like to meet you..
Renee,
Ha, Rick has had enough snow, wow! Ha, i have had enough of the cooler temps in Florida, he he eh.. Bring back 95 degrees soon..
Donald Trump gives a crap speech at CPAC and idiot Michael Medved tries to say Truck Frump is really a Democrat
Won’t miss the Affront with “Never an original thought” Burnett but then she is being replaced by Jake Tapper — the wanna be John Stossel Her panel to discuss the Trump speech was a complete and total waste of time. Much like her. Good-bye
I hear they offered you the job as Tapper’s lackey
Andrew M. Greeley is another priest who I thought was pretty cool. Solar, you may have heard of him. He used to write for a Chicago newspaper. He’s also a writter, lots of fiction and non-fiction.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Greeley
I knew several priests who worked as chaplains at different hospitals where I worked. I enjoyed hanging with them. I’d share some of my kooky ideas about life and they were very tolerant. LOL
Champ,
Tick, tock, tick tock ….
“Chloe, Chloe, WAKE up……last time i tell you a bed time story”
Solar,
I’m going to think of every word you said as I fall asleep tonight.
I knew you’d dress up this thread, and you never disappoint. It so good to hear your ideas again, and love the way your enthusiasm reveals itself in whatever you say.
Jamie,
Sorry to hear that just after getting help with your back, you now have this ankle problem. Hope it heels quickly and that you’re not in too much pain. In my opinion, most pain relievers don’t relieve pain.
If Bill keeps being this entertaining we may have to consider a down under alternate location for the Trailmix fish camp. No one would ever need to see snow again except on a voluntary basis.
My gypsy like youth was such that at one time or another I have been religiously everything. Bottom line, they all have the same essential message: Be nice to each other. Everything else is decoration and frippery.
Two quotes from today -
“There are no deniers in the natural world,” ………
“The animal, plant and insect kingdoms aren’t interested in public policy. They don’t read political blogs. They adapt because they have to. They must change to survive.”
“There are no deniers in the natural world,”
Ed Perry spent 30 years in Pennsylvania with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He came out of retirement and now travels the state as an advocate for the National Wildlife Federation’s global warming campaign.
… oh, and speaking of dressing up threads. Bill, you came in like gangbusters. I love the pic of your grand babies (is that right?)…. and happy birthday to your significant other!
Also, I really like what you said “Laziness does have its rewards.” I couldn’t agree more. Nice that your parents didn’t fill your head too full of ideas set in stone before you were old enough to decide for yourself.
“They adapt because they have to.”
I was thinking about what you’re talking about the other day, CBob…. about how quickly insects (for instance) adapt because of their short life spans. It’s almost scarey.
We humans live so much longer so we take a lot longer to evolve.
The late, great George Carlin: “The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles…hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worlwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages…And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet…the planet…the planet isn’t going anywhere. WE ARE”
“Gospel of Reason Pre-packaged rationality, ready for consumption” http://gospelofreason.wordpress.com/2007/05/24/george-carlin-the-planet-is-fine/
… how I miss him… saw him doing stand up in a club in L.A. when he was first becoming famous.
Miss Johnny Carson too. Saw him do stand up early on in Vegas. His opening act at the time was an unknown : Bette Middler. It was obvious what a big star she would become. She could dance, sing and joke like no one I’d ever seen.
But Carson was even more charismatic and already famous. I don’t think I stopped laughing once through his whole show. Same with Carlin.
Hi Chloe,
I second that Solar dresses up a thread! Amazing. I read TM these days and its so good..
Champ,
No kidding, your a terrific read. Lov you MR!
I was hooker losing her looks
I was a writer, can’t write another book
I was diver dying to get wet
I was Tycoon drowning in debt
I said hey hey, you got me rockin’ now.
Hi Tony… yes he does and never disappoints.
… you do more than your share of dressing up threads too.

Nature doesn’t watch, or read right wing media.
That’s for sure CBob. She has a mind of her own.
She shares all her clues with us… we just need to open our eyes to see them. Seems like those in charge would have learned by now more about ’cause and effect’. The big guys just aren’t looking or don’t care. Priorities: every one has their own (and they’re usually self indulgent).
Has anyone here ever thought about what the effects of pumping all that oil out of the earth may have on it.
… and it’s weird reading about all the sink holes lately. What’s that all about.
The crash of the monarch butterflies -
When they left Mexico, there was just 2.75 acres of them . 10 years ago the grove where they wintered was nearly 50 acres.
If you see a monarch this spring pay close attention to it.
You’ll never see them again.
… went back and read your other comment, CBob.
“They adapt because they have to. They must change to survive.”
It reinforces how slow we are to adapt. We’re supposed to be an intelligent species, but we seem to be using that intelligence to make money and war, instead of solving problems.
I’m thinkin’ that they’re sucking out all the deep buried liquids they can suck up and some of that odious limestone gets sucked into the void……

Yo, yo, Tony B., speaking of men of mystery… good to see you posting. I hope you didn’t take my riff on that Taylor Marsh article as directed towards you. I had just watched PBS “Newshour”, is all. That damned PBS “Newshour”, giving me agita.
It actually makes sense, Sturge. Don’t you think all that inner core liquid could have a cooling effect on the earth…. but there is less of it as time passes…. thanks to the never ending drilling.
“…giving me agita.”
Do you have any idea how often I have to look at a dictionary when I read your posts. Who would have known (probably everyone but me) that agita means: a feeling of agitation or anxiety. Among many other things, I imagine. Just don’t have time for too much research.
Hell, It’s all I can do to keep one step ahead of a 4 yr. old that has me outsmarted and wrapped around her little finger.
if you rob from peter, paul will bite you on the ass……
--Bongo Seville
.. Yep, Sturge.
That pretty much sums it up.
Sturg -
46 years ago I had a subscription to the ‘LA Free Press”. I was 17 at the time. They had an op ed cartoonist he showed the earth sitting in a blender being chewed to pieces, and spewing out the trash we all haul to the dump.
and paul….’e gotta biiiiig mout’.

Hey, hey you got me rockin’.
2013-46= 1967
I wound up with some pretty strange publications, yep…67 i was backing up the tams, the drifters, the hully gully olympics, the dixie cups, the vibrations, Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts, Huey “Piano” Smith and the Clowns, Gary “US” Bonds, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Ernie K-Doe, Bobby Moore and the rhythmn aces, Lee Dorsey, that kind of thing at this beach pavilion on the Isle of Palms…….then the coast guard called and I had a lot of time to sit and read….I remember Ramparts with the interview in 68 with vonnegut…..i might have that confused….anyway,
It was like being an apprentice to the lesser gods of “beach music”.
I was a sturgeon , till I got the shakes.
I was a fallin’ till you put on the brakes
Book of the Week: BEACH MUSIC, by Pat Conroy
“Agita kick….outa youuuu.”
--Pope Francis Albert
that boy pat conroy come in from out there, god knows where (dad was a marine pilot), got raised down the street in Beaufort by the great santini, educated himself in Charleston (there’s a kinder, gentler people in charleston) with the Lords of Discipline, taught little black kids on Daufuskie Island off Beaufort where the water is wide and they called him “Conrack” and was for a time one with the Prince of Tides…..he’s quite a guy.
You OWE it to yourselves to read Pat Conroy and William Price Fox.
Three years after the Stones -

Laura Nyro- Stoned Soul Picnic
Thanks for that one, the most forgotten song writer ever, with a giant check every month.
beatific.
Laura Nyro -
(October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist.
Wiki
Where is Laura Nyro ?
Now that we really need her .
Sturg -
She died on April 8th. Her music will come back more than once.
If one does anything on April 8th in America, you got it made.
Birth and death being at the top of the list.
Sturg -
April 8th is America’s big number.
More people, and their shit, has happened on April 8th in American, than any other date.
The key to anything involving solar energy is surface area. I read recently about coating roofs with solar-generating paint to make almost self-suffcient energy usage by retail stores. This is the future, my friends.
