Bill Maher has a segment where he asks, “Which state is the Dumbest?” and gives some funny examples of who should be in the running. I decided to do a (slightly) more real study: which state has truly screwed up American politics more than any other? I am a Democrat, so I eliminated any state that voted for President Obama in 2012 or has at least one current Democratic Senator.
Then I eliminated states that at least gave us one politician who has compromised, or tried to be moderate or somewhat reasonable on one major issue. I gave credit to Alaska for Sen. Lisa Murkowski on the budget and gay marriage. Then I had to grit my teeth, but I gave credit to Sens. John McCain (Arizona), Lindsey Graham (South Carolina), Bob Corker (Tennessee), and Johnny Isakson (Georgia), who were mentioned in AP articles recently as at least trying to keep in check the Tea Partiers who want to shut down the government.
Next, I eliminated states that at least had one Senator or House member who was a Democrat as recently as 2011: Alabama, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. Bigger states had an advantage here.
I was left with Wyoming. No Democrats elected to the U.S. House or Senate recently, and none who tried to reason with the Tea Party on any major issues to find middle ground. Our next chance is Liz Cheney, who is planning a primary Senate challenge to Sen. Mike Enzi. I’m not holding my breath on any member of her family or Enzi to be a profile in courage – or reason. Maybe we can append Wyoming to Idaho, so at least they don’t get 4 Senators?
