Mission Creep Iraq

I just don’t get it. Barack Obama campaigned against the war in Iraq, probably won the presidency because of it, and has consistently said we shouldn’t be there, got us out of there, and now he’s going back in? This afternoon in his tedious press conference he even echoed the George Bush / Condi Rice logic that we must stop the terrorists in Iraq or they will be on our doorstep “in the homeland.” And he more than hinted that the 300 “advisers” (not counting the untold support personnel and equipment they’ll need) could be accompanied by targeted air strikes, and suggested that the stability of “energy markets” is at the heart of his concern. Isn’t this all what he ridiculed when he was running for office six years ago?

  1. There are no words to express how much I HATE HATE HATE the term “homeland”. Talk about jingoistic yahoo terms that never fail to get you into way too much trouble while killing huge numbers of people. Everyone uttering the term should choke and turn blue without an available Heimlich Maneuver.

  2. Jamie’s right.

“Homeland” reminds me of stalin’s ‘motherland’ or ‘mother russia’, and hitler’s ‘vaterland’ or ‘heimat’ -- words meant to evoke maudlin emotions about the ruling party.

  3. Craig, the fact is that the bunk W-Cheney said to get us into Iraq was all lies and Obama was right to point that out, BUT, ironic as hell, the fact that we did invade and destroy the fabric of their society has led to a chaotic situation where, yes indeed, Al Qaeda IS now making a move to set up shop in Iraq, threaten/own the oil fields and therefore become a real threat to the world.
As state senator Obama said before the war ‘Al Qaeda is not a presence in Iraq, but if we invade and create a chaotic political vacuum, they will be.’ As Colin Powell said, ‘you break it you buy it’, and Bush bought it for the USA. It’s complicated as hell and there are no easy answers. Do you really think the world can allow Al Qaeda to own Iraq and their oil?

  4. Is it time to impeach ?

The rippers keep yakking about it in their ineffectual hatred-stirring. Dems could help them shit or get off the pot, while giving oh,bummer second thoughts.

  5. Hey… I thought this site has been down for 3 days… oh well.

Man… what a mess we’ve made of the Middle East. Makes one want to hole up with lots of wine… hell, make that anything alcoholic.

  6. Oh the hell with the name of the Washington football team. I say let them keep it… but they have to change their mascot to a potato.

  7. Stability of energy markets is a concern ?!?

How ’bout a war to liberate us from dependence on poisonous substances and poisonous people ?

frack addicts, exploding trains, oil spills, Mid-East tyrants, Venezuelan tyrants, & Texan tyrants are all killing, or threatening to kill us off.

This is an opportunity to weaken the energy markets and move to autonomy.

    Let’s get ‘er done !

  8. Washington Red Spuds ?

Fried w/catsup, or baked and filled with artificial cheese food substitute made from genuine Keystone Athabasca tar sands.

  9. You know what’s wrong with this place …. way too many people with operational brains. Snap to it folks, get in line, mouth the latest talking points from whatever side …. march to it …. NOW!!

    Good God! Pass the alcohol!

  10. george h.w.C.I.A. bush broke that pot in ’91. There was never any need to apply tape.

The Arab Spring inspired tens of millions of people to dream dreams of a better life in a better world -- as they each construe these concepts. Let all these dreams compete in the market place of the Iraqi abattoir, and the Hidden Hand shall slay the inferior goods and services, besides many of the dreamers. Milton Freidmanomics will create the new paradise where the original one once was. Let a thousand flowers bloom !

  11. Thank you for invoking me, xrep. I still read the threads, i just have as little to say as I did before. This clip captures my sentiment, well enough:

  12. American politics is pure buffoonery, to the degree that to speak out is to put one’s finger in a dike. One finger cannot impede the torrent of stupidity that drenches us all, daily.

  13. We could have ended war and world hunger, cured cancer, and colonized Mars, by now, but no, we’re too busy with the HRC Squirrel and some dumb fucking football team. They run around in shiny tights and throw an air bladder back and forth to sell beer, for Christ’s sake, who gives a fuck what they call them? Ai jai jai.

    Pardon me, I was invoked.

  14. Megyn Kelly Grills Dick Cheney, as Maliki Becomes Target
    by Taylor Marsh Video

AFTER A scathing op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, Dick Cheney has not stopped in pointing fingers at President Obama claiming the Obama doctrine is “collapsing.” With due respect to our President, I’m not completely sure at this point there is an Obama doctrine, but that’s another conversation. That Dick Cheney, with Liz Cheney at his side, thinks they’re the judge of what a collapsing foreign policy looks like is ironic, to say the least.

Megyn Kelly took the questioning right to Dick Cheney in an interview with the Cheneys on Wednesday night. From Politico:

“In your op-ed [in the Wall Street Journal], you write as follows: ‘Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many,” Kelly said on her show “The Kelly File.”

“But time and time again, history has proven that you got it wrong as well sir.”

What a creep Cheney is and his daughter, well she’s a creep too..

  15. Thanks, Ignex, You inspire me to send up a line from Le Fleurs du Mal, by Charles Baudelaire,

Washington is a universal sun, radiating stupidity.

Of course it really isn’t Washington, because all stupidity is local.

My apology goes to the late lamented Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill.

  16. …thinking of new names is fun, though, don’t get me wrong. I had a few duesies, myself, but if Dan Snyder uses any without proper compensation, I’m suing for a taste of those sweet NFL billions. Yum.

  18. Now, I’ve been called an “Obama apologist”, although I try not to be, and despite the fact that I tried to temper some of the enthusiasm regarding his potential to affect real and positive change within the constraints of the system in which he was operating, way back in 2008, but to be overly critical of his administration’s effort to both disengage from Iraq while simultaneously supporting a strong and just government is either blatant grandstanding or just plain ignorant.

There are no easy answers, and blood will flow, regardless. No viable politician could ever get broad-based approval to put in the effort in that region to affect change in a positive and humane way because this country is populated by too many voters with sub-par educations, myself included. So yes, I’m blaming the current situation in Iraq on the inadequacy of the American public education system, not Obama.

  19. …and yes, I am a registered voter. Pander to me, O ye, who seek power!

    Have a good day.

  20. Sounds like the army does what the army wants to do. Kinda like in Vietnam.

All’s you can do is try to stay the fuck out of their way, eh?

Ain’t it funny how time slips away?

I’ve always appreciated how almost seamlessly Dylan slipped from protest songs to Luv Music.

  21. With due respect, Ignex, the current situation seems to be a mix of both inadequate education and inadequate presidential engagement with his campaign pledges.

For my sins, I received an excellent classical education in admirable institutions. Yet many of my classmates, and even one or two instructors, were impervious to either reason or accuracy of diction. I am not without fault in this matter, either.

President Obama said he’d have the troops out of Iraq in the spring. He then changed to “in October”. We naturally thought October, 2009.

  22. 5 years into his administration, Obama is still trying to clean up the horrible mess that Bush left us, both in the economy and in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bill Clinton, for all his faults, left Bush with a booming economy, a budget surplus, and U.S. troops involved in NO wars.

Why anyone in the media listens to the GOP these days, about ANYTHING, is a mystery to me.

The Republicans are totally clueless morons.

You might as well ask a hamster for advice.

  23. Like, if one needed to demonstrably posses the practical knowledge of how to disassemble and reassemble a car, in order to operate one on the highways and by- ways, do you think traffic would still be a problem?

  24. A. Hamster:

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense under George W. Bush

    (interviewed on CNN)

“We need to send combat troops back into Iraq.”

“Also, clean the crap out of my cage, put down fresh cedar wood shavings, refill the water bottle, and put some oil on my exercise wheel: it squeaks.”

  25. Chicken Hawks…

To the neocons. war is a spectator sport.

Neither they, nor any member of their families, will ever serve in the military forces of the USA, but they love to WATCH people being killed in wars.

It makes them feel …. excited.

  26. Tonyb: “But time and time again, history has proven that you got it wrong as well sir.”

They were wrong about the reasons wrong, about the aims, wrong about the cost, wrong about the duration, and wrong about the outcomes.

When you are wrong about those five items, it really doesn’t make much if any difference if you were right about anything else.

There are lottery players with a better percentage.

Chickenhawk Cheney and Lapdog Liz will never get it.

  27. Ignex……it never fails to lift my mood to see that you’ve written something on the board.

It’s like when I walk thru the back door some days and there’s that fool cat of mine acting like he’s going to pounce……

  28. the amazing thing with neo-cons is that it is EXACTLY what it looks like: Old white draft dodgers who get off on war shit. Especially that part about not crapping their OWN pants.

  29. Who gives a damn what happens in Iraq?

One bunch of creeps killing another bunch of creeps.

Just sit back and see who wins, then deal with them.

    How complicated is that?

  30. Sturgeone,

You struck a chord. I would much rather crap in someone else’s pants.

Some of them seem to think they are reincarnations of Rbt E. Lee or Julius Caesar. cheney is a serious boozer like alexander the Great, but by the time alex was cheney’s age he’d been dead 37 years.

  31. Nash 2.5: One bunch of creeps killing another bunch of creeps.

    Nash,

So it won’t be mission creep, but rather a creepy mission. Sounds about right.

  32. 2016: HRC vs Romney?

    According to dailykos.com …

Mitt Romney is now the “Establishment” GOP’s #1 choice for President in 2016.

    If so, Romney is doomed.

The Clintons will have him stuffed and mounted and put on display at the Smithsonian.

  33. I think I’d have to go for Romney, while holding my nose- current events seem to have vindicated him and his platform, and he sure is chatty, these days. Ann’s happy to have him out of the house.

  34. “You’re gonna run like crap through a goose, Mitt!, You’re gonna &!$$ lightning and $&!+ thunder!”

Ok, enough. Thanks, sturge, if my previous post doesn’t say so, already.

  35. Nash 2.5,

~~Exactly !! get all our people out of there & let ‘em have at it! .. we need to take care of our own Country , that’s been ignored so badly the last 14 years .. so much needs to be done, but we’ve heard from the Gop, they don’t care about the American people .. all they think about is their Master, makes me sick .. ~~

  36. Vivian, welcome or welcome back
Ya know ya’ll are to caught up with neocon fever. That means you have been watching too much cable
Turn off the the TV, put down the remote and slowly back away. This is a serious situation and you will learn nothing from watching cable.

    Jack

  37. Ya know his lordship has been getting down right positive and I think he may start singing kumbaya

    Scary

    Jack

  38. Craig

As everybody knows I’m not a fan of Israel, but jeez their neighborhood just took a serious turn for the worse. A radical Sunni Islam state damn near on their border. Iran with boots on the ground in Iraq. Lebanon is dominated by Hezbollah. Hamas is gaining legitimacy. That leaves Jordan and do you think they are long for the world?
come on lets get real, Obama’s inattention to business has created a real mess. But 500 advisors lol pissing in the wind

    Jack

  39. 300 U.S. advisors arrive in Iraq…

Advisors: “Hey! You Shiites stop killing Sunnis, and you Sunnis stop killing Shiites!”

Iraqis: “Good idea. Why didn’t we think of that?”

Advisors: “Next, set up a truly representative government, embrace global capitalism, and don’t sell too much oil to the Chinese. Now, where can we get a drink around here?”

    Iraqis: “Try Bahrain.”

Advisors: “OK, we’re outta here. Just remember what we taught you or we’ll be back again.”

  40. whskyjack,

    Amen!
One doesn’t learn about what’s happening in the world on cable news… hell, you don’t learn what’s happening in this country either. All it’s about is politics. The Republicans bashing the Democrats or the Democrats bashing the Republicans… it just depends on which channel one chooses. And the one that claims to be in the middle focuses obsessively on silly shit such as disabled cruise ships or missing planes.

  41. Craig.Crawford,

    But Poobah, Bremmer wore boots.

Ig, it’s kinda foolish (OK, arrogant beyond belief) to think that the US, through superior military force, could possibly bring stability to a conflict that has been going, on and off, since the seventh century, AD. Blaming Obama for the current situationin the region or giving Shrub credit for a momentary lull almost completely ignores the history of the Sunni-Shia schism in the Islamic faith. I blame both of them for thinking they could do anything about it.

  42. In this case I suspect the “advisor” means to advise our B-1s _exactly_ where to deposit their loads should the president decide that step is necessary.

If there are senior advisors who have personal rapport with senior military counterparts, those channels may be exploited.

Political advice is strictly the business of those in the embassy.

If all goes to hell, advice will be offered to embassy staff on how to survive.

  43. Nash 2.5,

Still, the GOP debates will be entertaining. Now this Schweitzer dude is thinking of running (while offending every group of people when he opens his mouth), along side Perry & his Clark Kent glasses (as he makes a showy point of border security by spending in excess of a million to do what the federal govt won’t), and Christie (if he can get by bridge-gate & the lap-band surgery finally takes), and Paul Ryan (who is just smug and against everything his Pope is for)…Lordy, if the ex-half-governor of Alaska feels the need for more attention, I can totally see her jumping in, too. Jeb?
If not now, when? Romney is just awful, but will sound sane next to Ted I’m-Not-A-Canuck Cruz.

Anyone sounding semi-reasonable will not make it through their primary:
    Huntsman, Hunstsman, Huntsman.
    ***

    Clinton/Castro
    Biden/?
    Webb/Warren
    Kerrey/?

*ps -- Unmanned drones aren’t, technically, troops.

  44. Why was the CDC preparing anthrax samples for research to go to three labs????

  45. Wait, Schweitzer is a Dem? In that case, he weeded himself out of the running already. Kerrey says he’s not running.

  46. That Huppenthal guy is a card. (Of course I post under a pseudonym, so I shouldn’t throw stones.) Maybe I should go to our local blog as Pogo and talk about what a great job I do as a lawyer.

  47. Pogo,

Yes he is a real joke or maybe I should say joker.

Sadly he will probably win reelection in a walkover.

In theory at least his job is to oversee public education. In practice he is just another republican privatizer.

  48. RT @ThisWeekABC: On Sunday, we’ll have an interview w/ former VP Dick Cheney. #ThisWeek cc: @jonkarl

Note to ABC: Haven’t you been listening?
Nobody gives a shit about what Dick Cheney has to say!

  50. from usnews

The spiritual leader of Iraq’s Shiite majority called for a new, “effective” government Friday, increasing pressure on the country’s prime minister as an offensive by Sunni militants rages on.

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s comments at Friday prayers contained thinly veiled criticism that Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, in office since 2006, was to blame for the nation’s crisis over the blitz by the al-Qaida-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

  51. Ignex: We could have ended war and world hunger, cured cancer, and colonized Mars, by now, but no, we’re too busy with the HRC Squirrel and some dumb fucking football team.

like electro-shock therapy, a cold shower and a slap in the face. thanks, champ, I needed that.

can’t say it better than sturgeone did up thread. welcome back amongst the walking dead.

  52. oh how I wish that colin powell or some other equally respected goper victim of the inner circle jerk-off would publically lash back at the latest dick droppings. is it too late for them to bring civil suit for destroying their reputations or better yet blow the whistle on the real weapons of mass destruction: cheney, rumsfeld etc. as this huffpo article today proclaims

Neocons Should Be Held Criminally Liable for Failed Iraq War Predictions and Damages to Our Country

    if wishes were fishes

  53. Actually…. Craig’s column from a few days ago entitled “Reid Disses Redskins” made the exact same point as Iggy made.

    Hey Craig… it’s all fixed.

  54. Does anyone really think the world can allow Al Qaeda to own Iraq and their oil?

    Chip… in a word… no.

It’s complicated as hell and there are no easy answers.

    in another word… amen.

  55. conclusion of that above mentioned huffpo article worthy of encore

The day that international relations scholars know that their predictions will potentially be subject to legal scrutiny, then we’ll have a more subdued dialogue for future wars and military interventions. When someone bets on a horse or football game and loses, they pay their debt. When writers advocate wars that fail, they too should be liable, at least in some legal manner if their words directly influence the fate of millions.

  56. It is complicated as Hell. So complicated in fact that we will never be able to untie the Gordian knot.

We have nothing in common with these people nor they with us.

No more blood no more lives and no more treasure
for this region. Leave now and leave for good.

We will never make common cause with people like this, nor should we try.
