Don’t mean to overreact and risk boosting everybody’s blood pressure higher than opening offers on Facebook’s upcoming IPO, but this might be a halfway decent time to seek out a nice safe steel bunker to hunker down in or behind, because it’s awards season and heavy metal statuettes are being tossed around like dimes at a county fair.

Pardon me for laughing at the so-called GOP establishment whispering to us their fear of Rick Santorum’s religious authenticity. Oh, they say, if he wins Michigan we must find another candidate. Huh? Sorry folks but this is what you get after years building a coalition based on a block of voters who only get your lip service.

These party leaders who would shun Santorum are those who eagerly harvested evangelicals for 30 years with phony appeals. Now a candidate who means it appears and they’re suddenly afraid?

This is what you get after decades of pandering to voters who have finally wised up to your scam and flock to a potential nominee who doesn’t just wink and nod but who would actually run as a pious unelectable Christian.

George W. Bush was a casual evangelical compared to Santorum. Even Bush knew better than to yak about the evils of contraceptives.

Live with it, Republican bosses. You made this bed. And if you can’t lie in it with Mitt Romney, you are stuck with the real deal, Rick Santorum.

I’m puzzled by this contradiction: The President’s campaign team boasts about his Latino support while his Administration brags about its record deportations, including parents separated from nearly 6,000 children a year.

Obama officials say they’ve doubled annual deportations to nearly 400,000 last year. Critics say those numbers are inflated. If so, why would a President targeting Latino voters even want to goose up deportation statistics to claim that he is twice as tough as his predecessor?

One argument, say Democrats, is that persuading the nation that border enforcement is working paves the way to immigration reform. But while Obama doubles down on deportations he has only paid lip service to seeking reforms.

President Obama has hardly been inspiring on this issue. He has pushed deportations to record levels while failing to reform immigration more humanely. — New York Times editorial, 2/20

Cases of children taken from their deported parents abound. Procedures for reuniting these families are so convoluted that many are permanently separated.

Politically, Obama is aided by a field of Republican challengers who say they would get even tougher. The GOP debate on Wednesday in Arizona will likely feature a rush by candidates to portray themselves as the most anti-immigrant.

Apparently, this is President Obama’s argument to Latino voters: Sure, I’m the worst you’ve seen, but the other guys are far worse.

While Super Pacs get all the attention there’s another much quieter but equally insidious new thing in 2012 politics – campaign organizations spying on your computer to figure out what sort of ads and messages will get you riled up.

Borrowed from the world of business marketing, microtargeting is not something campaigns or the companies they employ to do it are willing to talk about. This article by The New York Times attempts to lift the curtain on a practice so effective that presidential campaigns and others are expected to spend as much as 15 percent of their budgets on it.

The process for targeting a user with political messages takes three steps. The first two are common to any online marketing: a “cookie,” or digital marker, is dropped on a user’s computer after the user visits a Web site or makes a purchase, and that profile is matched with offline data like what charities a person supports, what type of credit card a person has and what type of car he or she drives. The political consultants then take a third step and match that data with voting records, including party registration and how often the person has voted in past election cycles, but not whom that person voted for.

Throughout the process, the targeted consumers are tagged with an alphanumeric code, removing their names and making the data anonymous. So while the campaigns are not aiming at consumers by name — only by the code — the effect is the same. Campaigns are able to aim at specific possible voters across the Web. Instead of buying an ad on, say, The Miami Herald Web site, a campaign can buy an audience.

– New York Times, 2/21

As Mitt Romney desperately seeks to win the Michigan primary invoking the memory of his father with glossy TV ads it is relevant to consider the bolder and more progressive man George Romney was. As a businessman his success rested on the pursuit of more fuel-efficient cars. He was a Republican governor who dared to give his state’s public workers collective bargaining rights for the first time ever. He was a man who saw the need to create a state income tax to provide benefits for Michigan’s least fortunate. And he fearlessly opposed the rise of right wing ideology within his own party.

Today, the irony is that Mitt Romney would encourage his rich friends to run negative ads against his own father if they were rivals.

But if he makes it to the general election, being more like his Dad would attract independents.

The contrast between father and son reveals less about Mitt Romney’s state of mind than it does about America’s. If Mitt has a tin ear for the concerns of the needy, if he goes along with the rightward turn of his party, he is simply mirroring the disturbing transformations of American business and politics in recent decades. In his public and private careers, the younger Romney has emulated the retreat of corporate elites and the Republican Party from the model of economic partnership and cross-party compromise that the elder Romney exemplified. At a moment when America needs both business innovation and effective oversight, vigorous growth as well as economic fairness, we would be better off with George, rather than Mitt, in the White House. — Jacob S. Hacker, Yale professor, and Paul Pierson, University of California at Berkeley professor (The Cap Times)

Or Is He?
In this pivotal interview George Romney’s confusing reservations and reversal about Viet Nam policy essentially ended his chances for the 1968 presidential campaign …

Such thinking would likely be wrong. In recent years when Republicans wimped out for supposedly electable moderates they lost: Ford, Bush Sr., Dole, McCain.

But there’s not much left for Romney to argue, except to say that a disingenuous conservative who doesn’t frighten independents might eke out a victory. How’s that for a bumper sticker!

My notes on today’s campaign news …

LOL of the day: Mitt aides spinning reporters that they’re not panicking

Romney chose not to flip on opposing auto bailout. So weird this is where he finally decides to be consistent

Worth remembering from last FEC report: Pro-Romney SuperPac raised $25 million from just 90 donors

NOT in Mitt’s Michigan heritage ad: None of his current 4 homes are there

Did Romney’s Dog Seek Asylum In Canada?

Et tu Ohio? Santorum 36, Romney 29 (Quinnipiac)

If Mitt has to start spending his own money, how long before he’s a two percenter?

Not in Mitt’s new bio ad: His Dad was the father of collective bargaining for Mich public workers

Also not in Mitt’s Mich bio ad: His dad created state income tax

TV spot idea for Dems: Use Romney’s latest feel-good car driving TV footage and pan to caged dog on roof

And finally a Romney foe figures out a way to effectively mock Mitt Incorporated …
